President Trump on Thursday said mass testing for the coronavirus is not necessary for the United States to get back to normal, contradicting experts who say widespread testing will be key to successfully easing out of social distancing.

"It's not necessary, but it would be a good thing to have," Trump said of mass testing, which federal officials have struggled to roll out. Tests for 325 million people " about the population of the United States " "is not going to happen," Trump said.
First off, there hasn't been a single person alive that says all 330 million Americans need to be tested. Trump doesn't even understand how and why mass testing is necessary to identify, track, and stamp out the virus' spread by starving it of new targets.

Let there be no ambiguity here: If Donald Trump forces America to "reopen" before a nationwide mass testing and tracking systems aren't set up, then more people will die and more people will get sick with the coronavirus. And worse of all, the country will almost certainly be forced to shut down again, guaranteeing even deeper fiscal destruction than we're already experiencing.

The virus is going to virus, and if people continue to interact with other people, the virus will spread from the infected to the uninfected. That's what viruses do.

This is scary to hear. We might see +100k dead after all. All the sacrifices everyone has made, not counting the illness and death, will have been for nothing.

By telling everyone today that 2 million tests are all that's going to be needed, tomorrow he'll be able to take credit for reaching the goal he had previously set out for the nation. As far as he and his minions are concerned, he's already saved the country, so now he can get on with the truly important needs of the nation, like getting himself reelected.

Trump is considering his re-election, not mass deaths.

I don't know of a more hateful man.

I feel sorry for the West Coast states as they're diligently doing what's necessary to stop the spread of Covid because unless they build a wall stopping entry in their states, infected people traveling from other states not practicing isolation protocols will undoubtedly reintroduce the virus into their communities where it will spread and start the cycle all over again.

It's going to help if comprehensive testing is done in many locations, but without a national, comprehensive program and tracking system nothing is going to stop the continued spreading of the virus at minimum by asymptomatic carriers that aren't identified as they infect others.

I heard that one of the reasons that the feds are now saying that there won't be as much testing as they initially indicated there would be, is because apparently no one took the necessary steps to assure that there would be an adequate supplies of the extra-long swabs that are needed to get a sample from the back of a person's nasal passage. They are now being forced to save what swabs that they have for testing people being admitted to hospitals and such. This means, that unless supplies are replenished soon, that there will be NO wide-spread testing of the general population.

One of the problems appears to be that one of the largest suppliers of these extra-long swabs just happens to be located in Italy.

I see many large companies recognizing that this administration is full of crap and that if they say "Go back to work!" many who have already moved to working from home will simply stay at home. And as people start to get unemployment, they will be in no rush to get back out there knowing that too.

Which is shockingly low here in Houston. People are afraid to go to the hospital. ER nurse staff are having their hours cut.

Thanks President Trump!

Why won't covid take him already?! I don't want to wait for him to develop liver malfunction or lose his eyesight from taking hydroxychloroquine. Is he spraying his face with Christ blood and why is it orange? Maybe it's tropical flavored like his Happy Friday tears.

Trump knows that if he loses in November, he dies in prison. He will sacrifice millions of Americans to prevent that.

Well, there's still a chance Melania Braun will go down on^H^H with Trump, by the end of April.

"Trump knows that if he loses in November, he dies in prison. "

You're thinking too small.

Trump needs another term to pay off his political debts to some very dangerous people (not of this country).

Prison may be the safest place for him if he loses in November.

Sitzkieg:
Same here in DFW and eastward.
Some staff are being furloughed at area hospitals, nurses are told they cannot have extra work days and must clock in within. Ten minutes of on-shift.
Since hospitals cannot get lucrative elective surgeries at this time, they are cutting staff to maintain corporate profits.

Eff the corporatists. This is the biggest argument for nationalized health care.

The feds performance over this entire pandemic is the biggest argument against it.

Never waste a crisis right? Texas covid performance has been good. Respirator surplus, bed surplus, one of the latest state peaks. First thing Abbot did: Declare abortions are elective procedures.

The idea of Trump and Abbot dictating all of my healthcare options is very, very unappealing.

#27 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2020-04-12 08:23 AM | Reply

#27 - Where the State dictating rights is OK with you with an ineffective Federal government run by incompetents that don't believe in Federal government is very, very appealing to you.

No thank you.

How you could even post that, with all the evidence exposed through this pandemic of what a non-coordinated piss-poor Federal response has done, is stunning.

"all my healthcare options" - LMAO! Me either! So much drama and not an ounce of truth. You don't even get that with Medicare. From your abortion comment it sounds like you're fine with the State dictating all your healthcare options.

Only Trump could make Abbot look good. Yay for Texas.

You want nationalized healthcare. That's healthcare run by the same people above. Even Medicare is run by a Trump appointee that's from the AEI and handed out millions in contracts to Republican groups.

That's the future of nationalized healthcare. Same ----. Just bigger. No thanks.

The irony is, that's what you'll get. I'll get basically what we have now when it's not covid season. I'll still be on private insurance, just like I would be in every very white Democratic Socialist nation. Be careful what you wish for.
