I wonder how many illegal immigrants work at those plants. We don't want those immigrants bringing disease into our meat do we. Time to call ICE. Those jobs should be for Americans.

The "critical infrastructure."

Trump had already indicated he would shield employers from liability related to this. This is just how he's going to "order" them to stay open.

He's really just saying "hey, I've got your back on this...if lawsuits start flooding in....we'll protect you".

Good now you people can quit buying out all the veggie meat substitutes.

Even tofu has gotten scarce and since that's gross if not prepared right and I know you meat eaters don't know how to prepare it I'm just at a loss.

Honestly though I thought this might be what got some unions into meat packing plants but with an emergency declaration it won't happen.

We didn't ask those types of questions when I worked for a large agribiz that at the time was based in Omaha. But immigrants, documented or otherwise somewhere made up a quarter to a third of the labor at the plants in the plains states. That along with astronomically high turnover rates and red state laws is why you'll likely never see any effort to unionize those plants no matter how much they exploit labor.

Most of the conservatives I know, and polling supports this, are taking it seriously. I look at this more like the anti-vax movement. We've got science and anti-authoritarians on the fringes of both left and right. In this case it may be more predominate coming from the right but I don't see this as partisan.

Chris Hayes: Tyranny is the government telling you you can't go to a hair salon because there's a plague.
Freedom, on the other hand, is the government telling you you have to go back to work at your plague-stricken pork processing plant alongside workers who might be sick.

So the meat company executives asked Dotard how they can stay open when workers refuse to come to work. On the positive side for Tucker/Hanutty/Ingraham as they broadcast safely from their million+ dollar homes, is that the workers that don't die will have herd immunity and so will the worker's family members that survive.

Gawd is his shield.

Though I remember that it is not good to test a Gawd. They don't seem to like it and so they tend to do funny things to the challenger.

As the Trumpists return to their hoax narrative, reality tries to make a comeback.

The JBS meatpacking plant in Greeley, Colorado now has 245 infected employees, up from 102 a week ago. Five plant workers have died.

Oh well, what's a few dead workers when America wants its hamberders?

#28 | Posted by snoofy, Why would you care? Have you ever been inside a packing plant? The majority of the packers are immigrants. That has been a fact sense Sinclair wrote about the meat packers in Chicago over a century ago. About a third of the beef in this country is cut in an area between Lubbock and Amarillo. Pork is cut in Ohio, Chicken comes from Arkansas and from all over the south. I worked on a swing shift starting at 10:00 PM till 6:00 AM steam cleaning the lines. That happens every day,7 days a week. Not a job for the squeamish. I admire the fact that nothing is wasted; blood, bone, hair, gut, fat and hide are all used for something. Everything from dog food, to paint, soap and drugs. You have no idea how integrated and time sensitive this industry is. Packing houses depend on feed lots. Feed lots depend on ranchers and farmers, the farmers and ranchers depend on feed lots for a cash market. Yes, those packing houses are much more important than you apparently understand. I guess those working in that industry are expendable, I think poverty is a bigger threat to their health than the threat of a viral infection which has a mortality rate of .02% from the most recent data.

If they have to work, then they need to be spaced out, not crowded in even tighter (the Trump's administration approved even higher spacing for one processor in the midst of this pandemic), output needs to drop as a result, the companies need to accept that for now until we can get ahead of this pandemic. They need to test everyone, not just those that complain of symptoms. Are these people as stupid (or even more stupid) than that dmubass GA governor that said "I just found out people without symptoms can transmit the disease!" They need to then take care of those that test positive. It is the company's fault that they are getting sick. If you have any doubt, just look at the numbers.

Because it's not about the pandemic... it's about Humpy's re-election. It's hi I can't under why he wants to put himself through another 4 years of humiliation and scorn from America.

But it seems that it does not matter how many have to die in order to get Trumpy re-elected.

It's either all about delay and obfuscate until November. Gotta bring those economic numbers up just before and until November.

Or

Create so much chaos just before November that Trumpy has to declare martial law and postpone or better yet just completely cancel the elections.

#29 5 JBS plant workers have died. At a mortality rate of 0.02% that means 25000 workers were infected at that plant and the rest will recover.

Your data source is bad.

Do you actually know who is panicking? Trump, the Fed, Treasury Sec., Governors, Mayors, CEOs, Stock brokers, etc. The Fed has created over 4 trillion dollars out of nothing and will have to continue creating even more with no end in sight. Meanwhile Visitor quotes meaningless, stupid right wing talking points.

#42 | Posted by snoofy If you hate capitalism so much, there are places where that system is outlawed. Tyson is as nastier and more irredeemable than Kerr McGee or Monsanto. That is saying a lot. I never buy their products. If you learn anything about how operate, you would not ether. They seem to have excellent luck with lawsuits, the plaintiffs seems to die before trial very frequently.

"If you hate capitalism so much, there are places where that system is outlawed"

I don't hate capitalism so much.
It's just not enough to govern society.
You need other things.
You need people like you, willing to give your life to the state, for example.

#44 | Posted by snoofy at 2020-04-30 07:48 PM | Reply

I also never buy Tyson products.
But I shouldn't even have to make that choice.
But Tyson shouldn't be allowed to to the evil things they do.
If you want to call what they do capitalism, then sure, I hate capitalism.
It's more like I hate what capitalists can get away with when we've got a fox guarding the hen house.

I'm sure you can understand where I'm coming from, since it sounds like you hate Tyson too.
