Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The epidemiological models under review in the White House Situation Room in late March were bracing. In a best-case scenario, they showed the novel coronavirus was likely to kill between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans. President Trump was apprehensive about so much carnage on his watch, yet also impatient to reopen the economy -- and he wanted data to justify doing so.

Will Saletan @saletan

On Fox, Birx rejects lowball White House death projections.

Wallace: "Just a few days ago, the White House was projecting 60,000 fatalities. And we're already up to 66,000."

Birx: "Our projections have always been between 100,000 and 240,000 ...And that's with full mitigation."

It should be noted that tonight on Fox Trump was forced to raise his own projections:

Yashar Ali @yashar

President Trump says he used to say there would be 65,000 deaths but now he's saying 80,000 or 90,000 deaths.

"It goes up and it goes up rapidly."

Who is right? Doctors like Birx and Grayson or Boogaloo MAGA-heads? We're about to find out:

Dr. Dena Grayson @DrDenaGrayson

The US had its deadliest day on record due to #coronavirus on Thursday with 2,909 deaths in just 24 hours.

Unlike most countries, the number of new #COVID19 deaths each day is NOT declining substantially, yet states are starting to reopen.

As states reopen, the number of new #coronavirus cases in the US is NOT declining"unlike most countries"and remains HIGHER than 20,000 new #COVID19 cases every day.

As #PhysicalDistancing measures are loosened, new cases will surge again"it's only a matter of time.

I guess people thought it would go away with the warmer weather (like a miracle!) and that would be it.

We're not even to the second wave yet and we're showing ourselves incapable to dealing with it properly.

I guess Trump can brag about that later. He prevented the second wave by ensuring there was really one big wave!

I'm estimating 2 million directly.

If you look any of the graphs for USA,
They are not even flattening out yet.
And certainly haven't started going down.

"Trump is desperate . . . "

That tells the whole story right there.

I'm calling it "sweating bullets."

He only has a couple or three months to turn the economy around in time to get re-elected. Or at least put together a convincing sales pitch based on numbers that only exist in his head. (and on FOX)

It's no secret that the facts (about anything) never match what Trump (or FOX) is selling.

Caveat emptor! BIG TIME!

What has changed since mid March?

The health care system is marginally more prepared for this. They have learned techniques and there is promise of some drugs helping to treat the infection. Little else has changed.

It loves to talk about how America has more tests than anyone in the world and they're perfect. We don't and it's not. It wanted the CDC to develop our own test to give to corporate donors to produce and thus rejected the effective WHO test. That cost use WEEKS when the virus was raging out of control. It bragged in Feb how anyone who wanted a test could get one and it was perfect like the letter. Both baldface lies. Look at the faces of the SCIENTISTS at the CDC when it said that...the looks on their faces tell it all. No test for anyone and they were flawed and not reliable.

Here we are two month later and testing for everyone is being rolled out in a handful of cities in CA.

It signed the DPA, but failed to use it to force anyone to do anything. But it loved talking about how it signed the DPA because it was a wartime president. Again, all show and did nothing to help.

It signed the stimulus which gave BILLIONS to millionaires and one time payment of $1200 that it's treasury secretary says will last 10 WEEKS. WEEKS.

Now that tests are available, testing supplies are unavailable.

Everything it has done has helped out the 1% and not the public. The US has shedded 30,000,000 + million jobs. Credit card debt is skyrocketing. The virus is barely being managed and this idiot wants to re-open America. It put out guidelines for states to re-open. States are ignoring those guidelines and it refuses to enforce them.

It is a joke and it is now desperate. It's initial surge in polling from the response has evaporated like it's promises of tests, treatments and aid to taxpayers.

Juts like everything else it has done in the last three years, nothing of substance has been done and the blatant lying and gaslighting has WASTED precious time. It ignored warnings. It trusted a lying Chinese regime. It blew off the virus for golf and rallies.

It's incompetent and arrogance has caused 60,000 deaths in the US.

Well at least COVFEF-19 is a good religious virus. Has anyone else noticed how it seems to take Sunday's off?

I'd like to see a graph done weekly instead of daily since Sunday seems to be the day off while Wed/Thur is the big push to take down as many as possible before the weekend hits. Looking at daily graphs seems to put a lot of noise in the system.

By now only people who are deliberately remaining ignorant, including but not limited to Dear Leader Lord Dampnut, are continuing to deny how bad the COVID-19 pandemic will be. Me? I am most definitely hoping the damage will be minimal; but that isn't where the smart people's money is bet!

1. The sick and/or death totals are both incomplete and likely under-reported.
2. Our government is lying to us. There's always a precedent, and here it's from the Vietnam Era, when we were told about the "light at the end of the tunnel," and "turning corners."
3. OOMPAH! (VERY old joke)
