Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

As President Trump presses for states to reopen their economies, his administration is privately projecting a steady rise in the number of cases and deaths from the coronavirus over the next several weeks, reaching about 3,000 daily deaths on June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, nearly double from the current level of about 1,750.

The numbers underscore a sobering reality: While the United States has been hunkered down for the past seven weeks, not much has changed. And the reopening to the economy will make matters worse.

The projections confirm the primary fear of public health experts: that a reopening of the economy will put the nation right back where it was in mid-March, when cases were rising so rapidly in some parts of the country that patients were dying on gurneys in hospital hallways as the health care system grew overloaded.

Don't let anyone championing a premature reopening of the economy escape responsibility for what is predicted to come next. Math is still undefeated when it comes to the viral spread of a highly contagious disease. Hopes, prayers, wishes and desires, not so much.

I hope senior citizens all across this country are paying attention. Sure, states are opening up, but at what risk and what cost to them? I hope AARP informs/warns seniors about these new statistics and that even the ones who are Trump voters pay attention and continue to practice social distancing, to wear masks and to shelter in place when they deem it necessary. I hope seniors remember that politicians like the lieutenant governor of Texas believe they are willing to sacrifice their lives for the economy but that they should continue to take protect measures if they aren't onboard with this plan.

I can not believe the number of people that are out and about without any protective measures. It's like its any other day. Even the ones that are most at risk don't even care.

"Even the ones that are most at risk don't even care."

My sister told me the same thing over the weekend about her various trips to places like Lowes and other grocery and retail outlets. Very few people wearing masks, including employees in their 50s-70s. Did they not hear about the Worcester Walmart that had to temporarily shutdown?:

After a bulk testing of 391 store employees on Thursday and Friday, 58 tested positive for the new coronavirus, City Manager Edward Augustus Jr. said. The store had been previously shut down with a total of 23 confirmed cases.

Coronavirus may last 2 years, study warns. And its second wave could be worse.

"A lot of the confusion, in general, is premised on the misunderstanding that if you control the epidemic once, then you're done," Harvard epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch told the USA TODAY Editorial Board last month. "There's no reason to think that."

All of this is for naught. The economy we used to have is gone and it isn't coming back. The entire travel industry isn't returning until there's either a vaccine or global herd immunity. Vegas will remain a ghost town or operate at a fraction of it's capacity. What about convention business and hotels? We do not have an economy built to operate under social distancing restrictions. Our societal in-person economy has been built for high occupancy and maximum capacity. Few businesses can operate at the volume necessary to support their normal overheads without a higher stream of customers than this reopening will deliver.

This isn't what I wish or want, it's simply what I see. The virus is continuing to do what it does given new bodies to infect and new patients to fill hospital beds and hallways. We'll either be forced to once again shut down commerce - this time with even more damage than the first - or we learn to accept the crushing of our hospital systems and the mounting death toll of our citizens for the futile grasp of desperate commerce.

That seems to be the choice.

If memory serves, an average of eleven US military were killed in Vietnam each day, when there was Vietnam.

Yeah, I understand that it does get old when I complain about Trump.

But I don't think me or anyone is going to get used to 3,000 dead each and every day.

#12 | Posted by Zed at 2020-05-04 02:00 PM | Reply

I am skeptical. That is a lot of deaths. If true, then that initial prediction of between 100,000 and 250,000 deaths made over a month ago will turn out to be accurate. Scary stuff. Stay home. Don't get yourself killed by the virus out of any passion to support Trump by pretending any of this is just a hoax.

Look at this photo from last night's Fox interview with Trump from the Lincoln Memorial. Notice Mnuchin and Pence standing amongst the onlookers, most of which aren't wearing any masks. These folks simply keep rolling the dice even if they spot test every person them come in contact with. It's almost like they're challenging the virus.

This is the example being set by those at the height of our government for the rest of the nation to follow. The CDC's numbers might be even higher by June if too many citizens follow the example of their leadership.

"It's almost like they're challenging the virus."

Remind you of anyone?:

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson Reveals How Seriously Sick He Was With COVID-19

LONDON (AP) " Prime Minister Boris Johnson has offered more insight into his hospitalization for coronavirus, telling a British newspaper that he knew doctors were preparing for the worst.

The 55-year-old Johnson, who spent three nights in intensive care during his week of treatment in a London hospital after falling ill with COVID-19, told The Sun newspaper he was aware that doctors were discussing his fate.

"It was a tough old moment, I won't deny it,'' he said. "They had a strategy to deal with a death of Stalin'-type scenario.''

Johnson couldn't believe how quickly his health had deteriorated and had difficulty understanding why he wasn't getting better. Medical workers gave him "liters and liters of oxygen'' but he said the "indicators kept going in the wrong direction.'

"But the bad moment came when it was 50-50 whether they were going to have to put a tube down my windpipe,'' he told the newspaper. "That was when it got a bit ... they were starting to think about how to handle it presentationally."

We do need to challenge this virus. Or any virus. Resistance is not futile. I will not be absorbed by the virus. It will not possess me!

Well, maybe it will. Eventually.

But I hope by then we will be much better at dealing with it therapeutically. We will learn to test. Maybe even develop a vaccine. We can defeat the virus. Eventually.

But we do need to be smarter than the virus. And patient. Most of us just need to be patient. And listen to and support our health care professionals. And repair our broken health care system.

We can still do business. I been doing things. Carefully. Until we learn more about this virus. It appears to be exploiting weaknesses in our behavior. You young whipper snappers can go ahead and challenge it head on.

I will wait right here. I'll hold your beer.

She Predicted the Coronavirus. What Does She Foresee Next?

If America enters the next wave of coronavirus infections "with the wealthy having gotten somehow wealthier off this pandemic by hedging, by shorting, by doing all the nasty things that they do, and we come out of our rabbit holes and realize, Oh, my God, it's not just that everyone I love is unemployed or underemployed and can't make their maintenance or their mortgage payments or their rent payments, but now all of a sudden those jerks that were flying around in private helicopters are now flying on private personal jets and they own an island that they go to and they don't care whether or not our streets are safe,' then I think we could have massive political disruption."

"Just as we come out of our holes and see what 25 percent unemployment looks like," she said, "we may also see what collective rage looks like."

We are at 70,000 deaths by the most conservative estimates. The actual are believed to be much higher. And to think that just six weeks ago Trump was calling this a hoax, and rightwing media such as Sean Hannity were claiming that the was intentionally being blown out of proportion by the liberal media just to make Trump look bad.

Just think how many tens of thousands of lives could have been saved had Trump taken this seriously from the very beginning. We have already lost more people than we lost in the Vietnam War, and that is using the most conservative numbers. Has it gotten through the heads of all of us yet that everything has changed? There is no going back to the old 'normal'. It just won't happen. But like so much else in this world, most of you will not believe until you actually see it all for yourselves. Tens of millions of Americans are no longer working. Businesses are grasping to hang on. Big Corporations are bleeding our coffers dry begging for bail outs. The airline industry? The tourist industry? Restaurants? Sporting events? Real estate and the rental industry? We are at the cusp of a deep hole.

The economy will not be getting back to 'normal'. The workplace will not. Hospital and insurance businesses are going to be dealing with the ripples for years to come. I just don't think very many of you out there really understand how much everything has fundamentally changed far and beyond any temporary inconvenience you may be currently experiencing. Historians will look back at 2020 as the beginning of a fundamental global revolution.

And still the death count grows.
