New York City's coronavirus outbreak grew so large by early March that the city became the primary source of new infections in the United States, new research reveals, as thousands of infected people traveled from the city and seeded outbreaks around the country. The findings are drawn from geneticists' tracking signature mutations of the virus, travel histories of infected people and models of the outbreak by infectious disease experts.

"We now have enough data to feel pretty confident that New York was the primary gateway for the rest of the country," said Nathan Grubaugh, an epidemiologist at the Yale School of Public Health.

The central role of New York's outbreak shows that decisions made by state and federal officials - including waiting to impose distancing measures and to limit international flights - helped shape the trajectory of the outbreak and allowed it to grow in the rest of the country.

And by mid-March, when President Trump restricted travel from Europe, the restrictions were essentially pointless, the data suggest, as the disease was already spreading widely within the country.

Meaning that Trump's Chinese travel ban did nothing to stop the spread of the disease coming into the country from Europe, which has now engulfed the entire US in this pandemic.

It loves to talk about how it shut down travel from China while ignoring it didn't shut down travel from Europe until it was far far too late.

Smartphone data shows out-of-state visitors flocked to Georgia as restaurants and other businesses reopened
www.washingtonpost.com

...One week after Georgia allowed dine-in restaurants, hair salons and other businesses to reopen, an additional 62,440 visitors arrived there daily, most from surrounding states where such businesses remained shuttered, according to an analysis of smartphone location data.

Researchers at the University of Maryland say the data provides some of the first hard evidence that reopening some state economies ahead of others could potentially worsen and prolong the spread of the novel coronavirus. Any impetus to travel, public health experts say, increases the number of people coming into contact with each other and raises the risk of transmission.

"It's exactly the kind of effect we've been worried about," said Meagan Fitzpatrick, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine....

It was just the "flu" back then. A Dem hoax after all.

Only 15 soon to be zero cases. And it will disappear like magic.

How could New York have known if the President of the United States said there was nothing to worry about?

This is why his words matter. People make decisions based off of what the President says or does. Even if he is an incompetent and ignorant baboon.

Really?

New York can't shut down international travel itself. That was the main problem.

The actions taken in New York state started when the state had only 89 cases.

They were shutting down 3-4 weeks before most states.

If we had rolled out testing earlier like most countries or Trump had listened to intelligence briefs, they might have known sooner to take action.

Instead your idiot President concealed information on the dangers of the virus from state leaders and let states make their own incredibly difficult decisions without much of the evidence concerning the spread of Coronavirus.

And now your idiot President is encouraging insurrection against states that have taken the actions you whine about New York not doing earlier.

Worth repeating...

And now Pres Trump is encouraging insurrection against states that have taken the actions you whine about New York not doing earlier.

I would also add that Pres Trump is encouraging that insurrection in many states where the cases of COVID-19 are still increasing.

Good thing the internet is forever...

"Police officers were watching Rhode Island's highways, bridges and bus stops. National Guard troops were trudging through resort towns with clipboards, knocking on doors. They were all hunting for fleeing New Yorkers and their telltale Empire State license plates

Legal experts said that states were on shaky ground pulling people over just for their license plates. And Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Saturday that Rhode Island's action was "at the point of absurdity."

"If they don't roll back that policy, I'm going to sue Rhode Island, because that clearly is unconstitutional," Governor Cuomo said on CNN."

Rhode Island Pulls Over New Yorkers to Keep the Virus at Bay
www.nytimes.com

...Police officers were watching Rhode Island's highways, bridges and bus stops. National Guard troops were trudging through resort towns with clipboards, knocking on doors. They were all hunting for fleeing New Yorkers and their telltale Empire State license plates.

The states are increasingly finding themselves pitted against one another, as they bid for scarce medical equipment, angle for federal aid and demand that nonresidents self-quarantine.

Few, though, have gone yet to the lengths Rhode Island has to try to keep the potentially infected at bay, especially those from New York, the biggest hot spot in the country.

Gov. Gina Raimondo, a Democrat, said on Friday that if New Yorkers entering the state did not quarantine themselves for 14 days after arrival, they would be fined and, if they continued to flout the order, arrested.

"That's a law " that's an order," Ms. Raimondo said. "It comes with penalties. It's not a suggestion."...

That was March 28, 2020, and the states were still fighting against each other while Pres Trump was fiddling in Washington,DC.

Typical goppers. Never solve a problem, just find ways to blame 'others'. This is why the US in in decline.

The US covid crisis is due to people in the US infecting people in the US.
It is much worse because the GOP lied about the risk, didn't prepare, failed at testing, which made tracing impossible, so we are stuck with social distancing until the infections drop and testing ramps up.

Trump is still failing at testing and he is actively working to sabotage social distancing. He is either a traitor, or willing to kill Americans to improve his polls. I say both.

How'd it get to New York City?

Somebody wasn't protecting the borders!
That's now New York's job.
It's the Executive branch of the Federal Government's job, overseen by the Commander in Chief President Donald J. TRUMP.

Trump failed to protect America despite repeated warnings.
77,964 people have died in America, and the pandemic is just getting started.
And the bulk of his supporters love him more than ever.

"Dear America: You are waking up, as Germany once did, to the awareness that 1/3 of your people would kill another 1/3, while 1/3 watches."

Washington state had the best response to covid. New York was slow but eventually recognized the threat. Deaths are declining in those states now. Deaths are rising in other states.

Trump failed America and the fascists still support him.

Ah yes Wuhan the 57th state. Pretty sure NY sucked harder than Wuhan too.

Every state has the same President. So differences in outcome must be due to a something else factor like governor. Cuomo, governor of death. Blue states are doing far worse than red.

As the head of the executive branch yes, his INaction is to blame for the poor response we've had here in the US.

You clearly have never heard of confounding factors, have you?

Or the phrase correlation does not equal causation? Right?

How do you explain the huge disparity in outcomes, given all states have exactly the same president?

How does the USA's outcome look compared to other western nations once you remove the outlier of the New York City metropolitan area? (Pretty well.)

"How do you explain the huge disparity in outcomes, given all states have exactly the same president?"

The explanation is: Time.

We're only like two or three months into an 18+ month pandemic. The disparities you're seeing will flatten as the virus infects 50% to 75% of the population. Were at like 1% of the population now.

It's not an evenly distributed 1% since like most everything else imported into America it starts on the coasts and works it's way inward.

Easy answer. Trump said there was nothing to worry about. He's only got 14% True/Mostly True on Politifact. 86% of whatever comes out of his mouth is, at best, half --------.

A grocery store chain knew and was already deploying a response a month or more before Fed, State, & Local government responses.
