Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

It was Jan. 22, a day after the first case of covid-19 was detected in the United States, and orders were pouring into Michael Bowen's company outside Fort Worth, some from as far away as Hong Kong. Bowen's medical supply company, Prestige Ameritech, could ramp up production to make an additional 1.7 million N95 masks a week. But communications over several days with senior agency officials - including Robert Kadlec, the assistant secretary for preparedness and emergency response - left Bowen with the clear impression that there was little immediate interest in his offer.

He viewed the shrinking domestic production of medical masks as a national security issue, though, and he wanted to give the federal government first dibs.

"We still have four like-new N95 manufacturing lines," Bowen wrote that day in an email to top administrators in the Department of Health and Human Services. "Reactivating these machines would be very difficult and very expensive but could be achieved in a dire situation."

"We are the last major domestic mask company," he wrote on Jan. 23. "My phones are ringing now, so I don't need' government business. I'm just letting you know that I can help you preserve our infrastructure if things ever get really bad. I'm a patriot first, businessman second."

In the end, the government did not take Bowen up on his offer. Even today, production lines that could be making more than 7 million masks a month sit dormant.

According to our President, no one could have foreseen the pandemic coming back in January when there were no US deaths and only a handful of confirmed cases. No one was talking about its predictable vector as a dominating global force of mass sickness and death, unrestrained by national boundaries and governmental decrees.

Except many saw it coming, including Americans trying to do their patriotic duty in looking out for the welfare of their fellow citizens only to have their contributions ignored or turned away because the Trump government from its very top decided that Trump's own political prospects would be harmed should he take proactive measures.

So Trump's personal needs based in ignorance became the official US government's response for all but the few scientists who managed to mealy-mouth the crisis into a pablum of some truth combined with soothing credit toward the President.

Nobody could have seen it coming.

Not even the day after it arrived, could they see it coming.

And now they're acting like it pretty much never existed anyway.

Trump has done more to save Michael Flynn from sentencing than save (checks today's number) 79,197 American's lives from COVID-19.

The GOP is a death cult.

There is a special place in hell reserved for Donald Trump and his family. It will be expecially hot because evil like theirs can't be killed with lesser levels of heat.

BTW, I would give Barron an exemption, he's not old enough to be considered a part of the evil that the rest of them are guilty of. Melania??? She gets no exemption, she's an adult, she sees what they are doing. Being complicit is the same thing as participation.

And then a month later (3/2/20) Robert Kadlec, Asst. Secretary for Preparedness & Emergency Response (and also for the National Strategic Stockpile) was rewarded for his short-sightedness by being appointed as Trump's top manager of emergency response across all the governments health agencies.

The Strategic National Stockpile was shipped to China on February 25th and Kadlec got a promotion on March 2nd. WHAT a coincidence!
