72 got COVID-19 after being at large event (in Wisconsin)

More than 70 people who tested positive for the coronavirus since an April 24 rally at the Wisconsin state Capitol indicated they had attended a large gathering, but the state Department of Health Services cant' say if they were at the rally because it is not tracking specific events.

The state health department said there have been 1,986 confirmed cases where onset or diagnosis happened on or after April 26. Of those, 72 people reported attending a large gathering.

More potential casualties for this list. I hope that we'll see stories of survival and learned knowledge from anyone who became infected while protesting their right to take risks. They got their wishes, messages currently received.

But I pray for all of those now affected by the decisions of others who never wanted this scourge to personally visit their lives.

... 80,037 Americans have died due to the coronavirus. ...

So... how do we fight this enemy. An enemy like none we Americans have never seen in recent decades.

Is "reopening," so some can get the haircut they desire, the way to fight this enemy?

Just how do we fight this enemy that has killed over 80,000 of your fellow Americans?

Pres Trump has declared himself to be a wartime president,

How does he plan to fight this enemy?

How?

By the capitulation to the virus as it ravages the Country, killing Americans?

By happy talk of how great a job he is doing?

By talk of reopening a Country in the midst of a crisis that is killing Americans?

How is Pres Trump intending to fight this enemy?

POSTED BY LAMPLIGHTER

He's not planning on fighting at all. He already declared victory and ordered everyone to come out of their fallout shelters.

This is what's so maddening: Every second Trump wastes in coordinating a comprehensive, interconnected, national testing regimen with attendant contact tracing tied to immediate isolation protocols, all we're doing is spinning our wheels, waiting for the virus to run its inevitable course through an undefended and unprepared American citizenry trying to survive largely without the federal government's help.

@#3 ... I hope I don't die alone. ...

Yeah, that has crossed my mind.

This enemy that Pres Trump is now downplaying has raised all manner of scenarios that I am reluctant to face, or that I can face but I do not think are appropriate to post for now.

If I get COVID-19, due to my pre-existing conditions (remember those?) I've got more than a 50% chance of dying.

Think about that for a second or two.

I have.

I think Trump is trying to reframe the debate into: We are in the process of defeating the invisible enemy and are on the verge of a great victory! The American people are great Covid warriors! Soon the invisible enemy will be defeated and disappear, and America will re-emerge stronger and greater than ever before! All under my successful and superior leadership, of course!

I usually try to avoid the hyperbole, but...

What is Pres Trump doing to mitigate this enemy upon our shores?

We are being attacked upon our home soil.

What is Pres Trump doing to protect us?

David Frum has been saying for weeks that the plan has always been to let the virus wash over the country, killing who it kills, i.e., those considered the oldest and weakest among us, until eventually herd immunity is established and/or a vaccine is developed.

More on Team Trump's campaign strategy:

Andy Slavitt @ @ASlavitt

COVID Update May 8: The political strategy of Trump turning "public health official" into the equivalent of "climate scientist" is underway. 1/

The view from Trump advisors not directly involved in the rising death toll is that the "CDC" (i.e., EPA) wants to burden Trump's chances of driving economic activity in the 8 states he cares about.2/

The effort to discredit these folks is on. With the same playbook used in climate science.
-First, CDC guidelines are being ignored.
-Now expect to hear more from "counter-scientists", discrediting the "doom and gloom" people who want to keep the economy down. 3/

They really think that they can turn Trump-facilitated continuing unnecessary sickness and death into a political winner for Trump?

That's all you need to know about Trump and his political allies. I'm not going to lump all Republicans into this slime for the sake of giving the sane ones a safe place to land so they can affirmatively reject Trump without it being categorized as a total embracing of progressive policies.

If Americans honestly put Trump back into the White House for 4 more years after Covid decimates American households and people have had nothing but idle time to fret and think about the impact it's had on their own lives, then there really isn't an America anymore.

I wouldn't know what else to say.

This is what is so positively stupid! The economy we just had is not coming back. It's dead. Think of how much of our economy was based on masses of people coming together, traveling together, basically moving freely and in unlimited numbers throughout every society on the planet. Until there's protection from the virus, the above activities aren't happening as they recently did.

There isn't enough old economy left to re-employee a redeemable enough portion of the unemployed. The travel and hotel industry will limp along with a fraction of the business they had before Coronavirus. Convention business has evaporated. Casinos even if they open will do pennies on what they normally did before. The restaurant/bar/entertainment industries all have to drastically change their business models while most people socially distance until they no longer have to in order to protect their health.

Trump is not proposing solutions to our situation now. All the campaign slogans and blameshifting will not change that immutable fact. But this is totally Trump's DNA. He really could turn this situation into a winner by actually proposing the need to quickly move into a different reality because of the virus, a better reality. But by November, everyone will personally known how different their lives are then as they were before. And before will have become a distant spot in the rear view mirror - just like Trump's popularity.

"They really think that they can turn Trump-facilitated continuing unnecessary sickness and death into a political winner for Trump?"

Yes:

More than anything, three advisers said, Trump is focused on how to turn the economy around and reopen the country, seeing a nascent recovery as key to getting reelected and his handling of the economy as one of his only strengths in the polls over Joe Biden.

"Given that we're going to be at 15 or 20 percent unemployment, it is the direction of the economy, rather than the raw numbers of the economy, that I think voters will judge him on," said Neil Newhouse, a prominent GOP pollster.

The president and senior White House advisers have begun holding meetings on a range of topics other than the coronavirus, such as a session Friday on the thrift savings plan in the Oval Office and a Monday session on health care.

Kushner is looking into vaccines and drug treatments and Parscale is looking into masks as campaign paraphernalia:

Trump son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, who has been running his own coronavirus effort, has begun interviewing candidates for a new position focused on finding vaccines and therapeutics, but some administration officials say it is another instance of Kushner stepping into territory he knows little about.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump huddled in the Oval Office with a mix of campaign aides and White House officials. No one wore masks, though campaign manager Brad Parscale did tweet a photo of himself in the West Wing sporting sunglasses and a white mask with red "Trump Pence 2020" lettering. Parscale brought five prototype campaign masks to show the president and is planning to send out 50,000 to supporters across the country.

A 2012 meta-analysis found that flu vaccination was effective 67 percent of the time; the populations that benefited the most were HIV-positive adults aged 18 to 55 (76 percent), healthy adults aged 18 to 46 (approximately 70 percent), and healthy children aged six to 24 months (66 percent).

#3 | POSTED BY EFFETEPOSER

When you die you will face your death alone. Everyone dies. No one will be there to guide you in the end. No one can go with you. Sorry. So you better get yourself ready for the experience of a lifetime. The very last one that is.

You can have a thousand people in your room when you die. You will still face your death alone.

It's not IF you will die. But when and how.

America is in denial of death. Has been for decades. We pretend life goes on forever and we can stay young forever. That is why this is so difficult for us. It shatters our sense of invincibility. When you see death dancing in the streets like it is and death comes knocking and possibly you even see your own death you see things differently.

Everyone should examine and be ready to die. Religion is supposed to prepare you but they lie. They tell you there is life after death. There is no "afterlife". No life after death. There is only life after life. After life after life unless we make the earth unlivable.

When you face death things that were important yesterday suddenly seem trivial.

He's burying himself talking about "pent up demand like you've never seen." For once, he's right. There is a pent up demand - for food, income, access to quality affordable healthcare and an ability to survive this pandemic without losing everything people have worked for over their entire lives.

Even if they succeed, a vaccine won't be widely available until 2021.

So, the "backup" is what's happening right now.
Some people want to stay at home where it's safest.
Others want the people staying at home to go back to work. With no regard for the workers health, but simply to ensure the economic well-being of job creators. who are already rich to begin with.
