Margaret Sullivan : Comparing the number of deaths from covid-19 to those caused by car crashes never made any sense. But the gimmick caught on anyway.

Trump and Trumpites have worked with true fanaticism to convince the nation that a few hundred thousand newly dead Americans is not any big deal.

... "We don't shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways," ...

We do, however, enact laws that increase the safety of cars, require driver training in order to get a license to drive, impose speed limits on most roads for safety reasons.

The whole "die on the highways" argument is so disingenuous. We actively work to reduce those deaths.

Once we get this COVID-19 crisis under control (medically, not politically), then we can start with more or less permanent mitigations to reduce the death toll from the virus.

Right now, with no cure, no vaccine, no clear understanding of the virus, we may have to react more strongly than we will need to in the mid or long term.

That Republicans seem to be so comfortable with sacrificing the lives of Americans on American soil for their own political purposes is disgusting.

This is the level of "intellect" that now dominates the right.

Even when it doesn't make sense, they cling to it anyways.

Does this count as MAGA stuff?

Let's make drunk driving great again.
Let's also let people shoot guns in the air during celebrations.
The number of people killed will be close to zero.

So much death could be avoided by mass and frequent testing, and healthy people could get back to work. But Trump doesn't want mass testing because it will reveal the true extent of virus infections and death, and that makes us look bad.

No, it's a great comparison:

38,000 people die yearly from car accidents
3,166 people roughly per month

81,000 people died from COVID-19 thus far
That's 35,000 per month approximately

COVID-19 is 10x more deadly than car accidents WITH Social Distancing

Just days after advocating against coronavirus testing President Donald Trump held a news conference to brag about the advances in testing for COVID-19, and even creating a new "metric," which does not exist and is impossible to measure.

The United States currently ranks 39th in per capita testing, yet Trump said on testing America has "prevailed."

But the President drew scorn when he declared that the U.S., along with Germany, lead the world in "lives saved per 100,000 people."

Many were quick to note that is a metric that does not exist for coronavirus, and it would be impossible to measure, unless every coronavirus case had been counted, and the testing for that has not happened.

Some believe Trump is referring to a specific John Hopkins report which shows Germany and the US being the bottom two in mortality rates for the 10 countries most affected by COVID-19 worldwide.

It's hard to know who to vote for.

"It's hard to know who to vote for."

Clue; not for the President who has overseen the deaths of over 80,000 Americans.

It is doubtful that ANY American would stand for the wholesale removal of safety features found on automobiles, power tools, kitchen appliances, medicine packaging and thousands of other everyday items which have been designed to reduce the stupidity factor so strong in Americans. I look forward to the next press conference and temper tantrum where Der Dotard is asked why there are laws prohibiting minors from buying and consuming alcohol. After all, alcoholism worked so well for Trump's brother...

Some believe they can clean up the president's lie by referring to a study that doesn't say anything close to what the President has been vomiting at us and hasn't read?

Trust me, if Trump is reelected, these items will be on his list of regulations that must be removed. In fact, it will be even worse since he'll use issues like this to argue for the removal of all of the barriers that are preventing American corporations from making more money so that the economy gets back to normal as quickly as possible. Next will be getting rid of the minimum wage, the 40 hour work week, child labor laws, etc. Then he'll demand that we launch an enormous guest worker program to fill those empty meat processing plants.

No, if Trump is reelected, there will be no America as we know it now.

Normalization permits Trump and his backers to continue to kill-off the highly dependent elderly, those with pre-conditions and persons-of-color with battlefield numbers. All of whom are condidered by those who support Trump's ojectives to be burdens on their wealth and their country. It's Murder, Inc!

Yes, if 40% of the deaths, instead of being people of color, were young, white, venture capitalists and hedge-fund managers we'd be seeing a very different response from the White House and the Republicans.

Trump doesn't need to do all the work by himself.

He's got RoC comparing it to H1N1, Jeff blaming it on China and wanting COVID to be yesterday's news, and the less reasonable idiots out there screaming how it's all fake.
