Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Gabriel Sherman: With the coronavirus death toll surpassing 80,000 and the unemployment rate at Great Depression-era levels, there is a growing consensus among senior Republicans that Donald Trump's reelection is slipping away. Recent internal polls show Trump trailing Joe Biden in six swing states, a data point that augurs a landslide loss in November. "The swing state polls are horrific," a prominent Republican briefed on the numbers told me.

"This is what should worry the campaign: Biden is in his basement and he's beating Trump," a former West Wing staffer told me. "If I were Biden, the lesson I would learn is: Shut the f*** up and let Trump go out there and destroy himself."

Some advisers are lobbying Trump to embrace the reopening. "They're going to gamble on the economy and hope it works," a former West Wing official said. But another camp is pushing the view that Trump should run on a blame-China message. On top of everything, there is also fear in Trumpworld that Senate Republicans might finally break from him if the polls get bad enough. "The numbers are f(reak)ing terrible," another former West Wing official said. "There's massive anxiety in the GOP that he's gonna take them all down with him."

I agree with the advice to Biden. Did anyone else watch Trump have his race-tinged, misogynist meltdown today at his Rose Garden press conference? Why in the world should Joe Biden try to take the spotlight away from Trump - who shows no inclination to stop digging the deepest most tragic hole of his entire career?

The election is going to be a referendum on Trump. Biden is right for letting him make the strongest case against his own re-election by simply being his contrast - presenting himself as calm, reasoned, compassionate and understanding of the catastrophic upheaval impacting every life in America in a way that Trump is just totally unable to convey.

"With the coronavirus death toll surpassing 80,000"

As many people have died as gave Trump his victory in 2016.

He had a wonderful opportunity to start the hammering on China when he told the reporter to "go ask China that nasty question." This would have fit perfectly with his strategy, yet he got emotional, threw his controller at the TV and stomped home.

Just like when Peter Alexander threw Trump the biggest softball question in the history of softball questions (What do you have to say to Americans that will reassure them?) and instead of smashing the pitch, Trump instead charged the mound.

Jenius of the Stable strikes again.

I don't. It's Trump's nature to insert himself and make himself the center of attention. It won't be difficult to keep him talking and screwing up.

But Biden needs to make the contrast to Trump. And not by playing the usual politics of focusing on the other candidate and trying to one up them or point out everything they say that can be spun a certain way.

He needs to simply put out a positive message, even if it's largely independent of what Trump says and doesn't focus on taking jabs and pot shots all the time.

And it's something you know he can do.

I believe that is pretty much the same thing I finished my post by saying:

Why is Trumpism losing everywhere?

Because Gawd obviously hates you Donald. It's a chaotic disaster. Who could have known?

And apparently though He loves and missed at least 100,000 of us Americans, too. (current approximate death toll from this particular chaotic disaster).

And as the religious might say... Gawd is calling them home because He loves them so much!

If there is a "God," he should be ticked off at Donald Trump for putting his thumb on the scale.

I am not religious though I am very spiritual.

The Donald is experiencing the wrath of the universe after decades of corruption.

The Donald appears to being taught some very serious lessons as a result of his Karma (with us horrible). I doubt he will learn them and... Unfortunately, in the end, 100s of thousands of Americans will have to suffer for his Sins also.

We will all have to endure the sins of this man for years now.

November will not get here fast enough to save a hundred thousand souls.

"Unfortunately, in the end, 100s of thousands of Americans will have to suffer for his Sins also."

Our idiotic and obsolete election system which includes the Electoral College is what is responsible for this disaster, Donald Trump is just the vessel. George W. Bush was also elected without actually gaining the larger number of votes. If we don't fix that we deserve the next Donald Trump.
Fix the system. Corporations are not people and I don't care what the corrupt SC says. Electoral College was designed to preserve the institution of slavery. We need to win this election, gain the majority in the Senate and the Presidency and make fixing the system, once and for all, the number one priority. Also, all lobbyists should be on unemployment lines and we should make it a criminal offense to lobby Congress or any other public body.
Billionaires should also not have the right to use their money to influence politicians. We are where we are because when Obama had the chance he did not focus on the system, we can't afford to make that mistake again, and I say that as a big supporter of Barrack Obama.

I didn't want to put out a number either.

I went with 100,000 because I know we will make that very soon if not already. I suspect we will double it before November.

Which will be compounded by the fact that many will not even be able to vote.

What happened in the 25th district of California should be a harbinger.

A trump backed Republican is winning there because many Democrats did not or could not vote.

DANNI-I've been screaming about that and more (term limits for one, a cap on judicial service-no more lifetime appointments etc.) for 30 years. It needs a drastic overhaul, but the politicians will never do it-the people have to through massive protests, as it was done in the 60's & early 70's.

#25 | Posted by Yodagirl at 2020-05-13 11:03 AM | Reply

I love the term limit idea, but I'm conflicted on judicial term limits.

On one hand YES of course they shouldn't get a lifetime appointment, just like any other American. However, we have seen what happens with shady members of congress doing favors for industries only to get gifted great jobs in those industries after they leave office. Wouldn't the same corruption be possible on the judicial side?

If anything, the Trump presidency should have shown people that the powers of the presidency need to be gutted. The problem is that Trump's supporters are loving the fact that he doesn't care about finding common ground, and the left are waiting in the wings in the hopes that maybe some day they can get a Bernie in that will behave in the very same way.

Why shouldnt they? Republicans pass every idiotic extremist policy and rigging the game policy they can pull off. Should dems bring a knife to that gun fight?

If one side is extreme, the other side has to be extreme just to strike balance in the middle.

So HRC loses in 2016 due to the screwed up Electoral College. And Trump loses in 2020 because of a global pandemic (and his incompetent response). Who says humans control events and not the other way around?

Did you bother to even look at the poll? This is the Reichwing Hill magazine making for Dotard happy talk.

"The poll did not include different surveys of each of the 15 states, but surveyed 583 people across 15 states that were decided by 8 points or fewer in 2016. The margin for the battleground states alone was 5.3 points."

So basically they surveyed an average of 38 people per state. You can't judge how an entire state will vote based on 38 people. The real, state by state polls where they actually survey a statistically significant number of voters show Biden up in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Florida and last I saw slightly down in Arizona, Texas and North Carolina close to or within the margin of error. Based on Diaper Donnie's full grampers, their internal polling is showing much the same, he is losing EVERYWHERE and it's getting worse! And as the second wave of COVID crashes across the country, and as the smart people refuse to go to crowded locations, thus worsening the recession/depression, those polling numbers will get worse. Hell, Combover Quisling's even losing in the Reichwing Rasmussen poll. Do you know hard it is for a Republican to be down in that poll?

#33 | Posted by _Gunslinger_ at 2020-05-14 02:18 PM | Reply

"The survey found the former vice president leading among voters 45 and older by 6 points, but neck and neck among voters under 45, with 49 percent supporting Biden and 46 percent supporting Trump. Biden also leads Trump among voters 65 and older.

Voters said they trust Trump over Biden to handle the economy, 54 percent to 42 percent. Biden, however, is more trusted to handle both the response to the coronavirus outbreak, 51 percent to 45 percent, and health care in general, 54 percent to 42 percent."

We're doomed.

Tattoo an L on Trump's forehead. He's a loser

Everything has been a sham. He inherited Obama's economy and takes credit for it.

When an actual emergency happens - like the 2009 crash - Trump's loser self shines through.
