In 1847, members of the Choctaw Nation sent relief money across the Atlantic to a starving Ireland -- something the Irish, who lost more than a million people in a famine made worse by British indifference, have never forgotten. The Irish are now giving financial aid to Native American tribes hit with a pandemic that has been made worse by American incompetence.

"A country that turned out eight combat aircraft every hour at the peak of World War II"

Donald Trump doesn't know we did that. Donald Trump is not a member of that tradition. Donald Trump is the leader of Trump Nation; Trump Nation doesn't know we did that. What Trump Nation does is confuse American Exceptionalism with belief in a flat Earth and hauling semi-automatic weapons into Statehouses.

"Will American Prestige Ever Recover From The Dotard?"

While the majority of the world believes Trump should not win reelection, most of South America, Africa, and Asia laughs at the audacity and lack of self awareness of Americans to even ask this question. If prestige is what we are looking for it's going to take a lot more than one election cycle to get it. And an necessary component of that is just as much what we do as what we don't do. We always seem to undervalue the former and make excuses for that undervaluation.

I despise Trump but George W. Bush destroyed America's prestige in the world. Trump has furthered the destruction of it but we should never lose sight of just how awful George W. Bush was/is.

I submit that the thing that has exposed American prestige for the illusion it has become is not the kleptocracy we have allowed to run the country, but the fact that American citizens have gone along with it.

#5 | Posted by contrecoup at 2020-05-12 09:47 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 7

American "prestige" has existed largely in our own minds for the last 30+ years. There are plenty of places with better standards of living and more respectable governments. Trump has simply lifted the veil for some Americans to see what much of the western world already knew.

Both under Bush and now under Trump the lemmings will call you a traitor for disagreeing with wannabe dictators.

No. They were rather happy with Bush I for the coalition building in Iraq and his wisdom to limit the conflict to far short of an actual invasion.

But that's it.

Clinton and Obama were both loved worldwide.

Bush 1 didn't have a valid reason forinvasion and had tolk Hussein that we would not get involved in Arab on Arab conflicts.

America is a danger to itself and the rest of humanity. A nation on the brink of mass psychosis. Nuclear armed with the will to kill.
Trump is a symptom of this inner derangement. The frequent deadly mass shootings are another. The poor response to the pandemic is to be expected from a society so deeply decayed from within. The lockdowns will accelerate the breakdown of civil norms. It's already happening.
Brazil is our closest parallel. Military dictatorship could be in our future the way things are going. Loss of everything that made America great is old news.

The death of empires is ugly and deadly for the people trapped in the death spiral.

Yes. America will. But will you Deplorables survive when Trumpy is gone?

What will the Trump Nation do once Trump is no longer in power and immune from prosecution?

You Deplorables all seem to forget there will be a morning after.

It's telling that American prestige levels are directly related to which party you belong to. Fingers get pointed across the aisle before actual concern does.

#18 | Posted by humtake at 2020-05-12 02:11 PM | Reply

American prestige levels are directly related to Trump's boorish and petulant behavior.

I was no fan of BushJr, but he did better on an international stage than Trump is.

BushSr threw up on the Prime Minister of Japan and even he was a better on an international stage than Trump.

The fact you idiots are so determined to protect this snake oil salesmen is what's destroying the GOP.

#19 | Posted by ClownShack at 2020-05-12 02:48 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Trump is an unmitigated disaster,
on all fronts, and Americans have
to face it. The biggest test will
be 1). the election, and 2). our
hopeful economic recovery.

If Trump is reelected, I predict
the 'end of America', at least in
any way, shape, or form that anyone
over 40 would recognize. Even should
he be defeated, it will take a miracle
of unilateral resolve (difficult in a bipolar
and totally split nation) to bring
us back from the economic brink.

Frankly, I don't see the current batch
of Americans having the resolve, or the
sense of sacrifice necessary to bring us back.
A HUGE part of THAT, is that the Rich don't care
about America. The Social Contract, which so long
served in America, is DEAD. The rich only care about Profit.
If America is no longer profitable, they are not going to
reach into their pockets and bail out the nation,
they will hop in their yachts, and private planes,
and skip off to Fiji, or Barbados, whilst they plan
the next nation they can rape, pillage, and destroy.

Personally I have a two-fold plan (and I encourage
all Americans to likewise have a multi-faceted plan).
If America somehow does the unthinkable, and recovers from
this absolutely fall flat on your face stumble, then I
retire to Maine. If it does not, and we circle the toilet
bowl, then I retire to Canada.

Have plans people...it's going to get U.G.L.Y...

No. Republicans just believe in a fantasy world where Bush and Trump increased American prestige despite every foreign country saying the opposite.

There are relatively objective measurements. You just refuse to look at them.

Once again, Facts seem to have a liberal bias.

Normal before Trump was not great either,if it was we never would have gotten Trump.

Trump is a symptom. The decay is far deeper than one administration,or party. Both parties are corrupt and controlled by a few rich "Donors" who are more like owners. Congress is corrupt and self serving, how is it that people pay millions of dollars to get elected to a job that pays less than $200,000 a year, and most of them become millionaires before they leave office?

The rot is deep. Almost too deep to excise.
None of this is new,but the nihlistic lack of morals and honesty on both sides is.

Ah, the old GOP meme of"the parties are the same"..... they will be SO proud of you!

One supposes that the new Dem stimulus bill is another example of how the parties are the same.

#25 | Posted by Corky at 2020-05-12 10:47 PM | Reply

No, but Pelosi's easy touch with the first stimulus payment and her willingness to give the repubs everything they wanted for the corporations,Was pure kabuki theatre to fool the rubes. She could have played much harder against the giveaways to the major corporations and been more aggressive about getting more for main Street. But her real constituency is the same as the repubs. She just has to throw more red meat to the little people who work for a living.

#26 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2020-05-13 01:04 AM | Reply

She knew all of her leverage with the repubs was in that first bill for the Corporations, that's why she let them get everything they wanted in that first bill. She knew the later stimuli were dead on arrival in the Senate so it was safe for her to go wild on them as they stood no chance of passing and her double dealing had cover. Her rich constituency was cared for and she got to look good to the rubes

#27 | Posted by Effeteposer at 2020-05-13 01:10 AM | Reply

#27 I don't really see a problem with bailing out companies, it's only a problem if the people don't get bailed out too.

Obviously, if we just bailed out the people, a lot of it would trickle down to the companies, but that's a separate issue, and it's not a guarantee.

The right thing to do is protect both our economy and our workers. You can't really have one without the other.

#28 | Posted by snoofy at 2020-05-13 02:44 AM | Reply

Trickle up. Give the poor money and they spend it. Trickle down just makes rich F**ks richer, they have no urgency to spend. They are already loaded. The extra money is just a bonus for being so wonderful.

Lowering Anerican prestige is what Deplorables wanted.

They phrased it as not wanting to be the world's policeman, but it's the same thing.

Teddy Roosevelt said "Speak soflty and carry a big stick."

Trump has evolved that to "Tweet loudly and blame China."
