Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, May 13, 2020

Former vice president Joe Biden appears on a declassified list of Obama administration officials who requested the unmasking of former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn. The list, obtained by CBS News, shows that Biden's office made its request to see Flynn's identity on January 12, 2017. While the NSA says it "cannot confirm" that those listed personally saw the information, the list also names former U.N. ambassador Samantha Power, former director of national intelligence James Clapper, former CIA director John Brennan, and former FBI director James Comey.

Biden said Tuesday that he knew the FBI had "asked for an investigation, but that's all I know about it," when asked about his knowledge of the Flynn case " which the Department of Justice dropped last week after reviewing new exculpatory information. Biden initially claimed he knew "nothing about those moves to investigate Michael Flynn," but was forced to backtrack after ABC's George Stephanopoulos pointed out Biden was reported to be in an Oval Office meeting on January 5, 2017, in which Flynn was discussed.

You don't even understand what unmasking means, do you? Let's go through the facts.

On December 29, 2016, President Obama levied sanctions, seizures and expulsions against Russia for their illegal interference in the 2016 Presidential election based on evidence compiled by US IC and the FBI.

Starting on Dec 30th, the Russian ambassador placed multiple calls to then President-elect Trump's incoming National Security Advisor Flynn in which comments were made about the sanctions Obama levied as it regarded Trump's likely response to said sanctions once inaugurated. The ambassador's phone was surveilled by US Intel and the resultant conversations were then passed through normal channels for dissemination based on whatever level of secrecy was required by law and statute.

Because the surveillance caught a US citizen in conversation with a Russian security operative, any reference to the identity of the American would have been "masked". At that point, high ranking US government officials wishing to discover to whom the Russian ambassador was speaking to on the recorded phone calls required them to request "unmasking" of that person in order to learn who that person was for the obvious reason of assessing the ramifications of the calls' content as a matter of national security.

There is nothing nefarious about those with the requisite classification clearance to seek the identity of whom the Russian ambassador was speaking to as it regarded legal sanctions placed by the government still in power. It's called due diligence.

Interestingly enough, the document released states:

"While the principals are identified below, we cannot confirm they saw the unmasked information."

ALT HED:

Intel Officials unmasked Mike Flynn's identity over 40 times, and ONLY when he secretly undermined US policy w/no permission from Trump did FBI sustain an investigation because of it.

There's another potential problem with @ChuckGrassley's declassified unmaskers.

At least as the record currently stands, the FBI found the report, not NSA. And per Comey, it was not a finalized intelligence product. These all are.

THE PUBLIC RECORD CLAIMS THAT FLYNN HAD NO PERMISSION FROM TRUMP TO UNDERMINE US POLICY IN CALLING KISLYAK

In the last several days, part time Director of National Intelligence and full time Twitter troll Ric Grennell declassified the names of people who unmasked Mike Flynn's name in call transcripts with Sergey Kislyak. The public record already shows the FBI did so after they discovered his calls explained why Russia had not responded as expected after Barack Obama imposed sanctions on Russia on December 28, 2016.

The press has, predictably, chased this issue as a matter of partisan game, demonstrating utter disinterest in how obviously they are being chumps in a political ploy.

Release of the list, which would be an unprecedented move, is likely to resurrect a partisan debate over an episode that had roiled the early days of Mr. Trump's presidency and has taken on renewed urgency after the Justice Department moved to drop a criminal case against Mr. Flynn last week.

It takes enormous leaps of willful ignorance of the facts to treat this as the partisan spat that Trump wants it to be.

That's true, for two reasons:

Kyle Cheney @kyledcheney

NEW: Grassley/Johnson have released list of Obama officials who made unmasking requests that might've IDed Flynn.

Most of the requests identified, though, came before Flynn spoke to Kislyak.

Mark S. Zaid @MarkSZaidEsq

Vast majority of unmasking requests were Dec 14-16, 2016 & "probably" dealt w/Turkey, which is why our NATO, Treasury & CIA officials, LAWFULLY requested to learn identity of USPER who appeared in intercepts. Keep in mind Flynn & others were being investigated for FARA violations

What info freaked out so many senior Govt officials on Dec 14-16, 2016? If you really want to be transparent & honest, @RichardGrenell, then declassify underlying memo(s) for public to see what #Flynn was up to & why senior USGOVT officials, all authorized, wanted to see name.

Sam Vinograd @sam_vinograd

Important unmasking context below.

It is a routine practice employed by bipartisan administrations, including Trump's.

As you look at the unmasking requests declassified by Grenell, ask yourself how many requests Trump's own USUN Amb, DNI, CIA Dir, NS Advisor, etc have made.

John Schindler @20committee

According to the DNI, NSA received these amounts of SIGINT "unmasking" requests per year:

2016: 9200
2017: 9500
2018: 17000
2019: 10000

Something very odd was happening in 2018. Remind me who was in the White House then...

Unmasking by U.S. intelligence agencies typically occurs after the United States conducts eavesdropping or other intelligence gathering aimed at foreigners or foreign agents, and the name of a U.S. citizen or entity is incidentally collected.

Intelligence reports are then disseminated within the U.S. government, with such names masked to protect those U.S. citizens from invasion of privacy. The names can subsequently be unmasked upon request by authorized U.S. government officials under certain circumstances.[1]

No one is doing either. We're trying to educate you to the fact that there is nothing wrong with "unmasking" and that you're misinterpreting the information being presented.

The unmasking happened. There just isn't anything nefarious about it because unmasking itself is a legal process.

Unmasking a traitor who tried to sell our foreign policy to the Russians = bad

Another possibility:

Except that some of these--such as the January 11 unmasking--are believed to relate to Mohammed bin Zayed's secret trip to the US to meet Flynn and Steve Bannon and Jared Kushner, and so are of another intercept.

Riddle me:

How could this be an evil plot to get at Flynn when the people asking to have Flynn's name unmasked, didn't know it was Flynn?

According to the Associated Press, however, the unmasking of someone is so frequently done that Trump has ordered the unmasking of over 36,000 people while in office. The numbers are significantly higher than Obama.

"The number of unmasking requests began being released to the public in response to recommendations in 2014 from the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board," the AP reported. "There were 9,217 unmasking requests in the 12-month period between September 2015 and August 2016, the first period in which numbers are publicly available. The period was during the latter years of the Obama administration. The number rose during the Trump administration. The 9,529 requests in 2017 grew to 16,721 in 2018 and 10,012 last year."

It adds up to over 36,200 cases of "unmasking" under Trump's leadership, higher than Obama's numbers in the years reported. Trump has not revealed the details about those over 36,000 cases, he's only focused on the unmasking under the Obama administration.

Yes, but is it worse than pizzagate?

Is it worse than Ted Cruz's father assassinating Kennedy?

Is it worse than Obama being born in Kenya?

Is it worse than thousands of New Jersey Muslims cheering the fall of the twin towers?

Is it worse than Obama wiretapping Trumpy's phones?

Is it worse than the millions of illegal aliens who voted for Hillary?

Surely it is not the "worst" thing Trumpy has ever made up.
