Hungary's emergency powers law, which gave the government sweeping powers, was introduced to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. But in an interview with DW, legal scholar Gabor Halmai said he fears the law is here to stay.

Let's up that Trump doesn't get wind of this, except that Orban is one of his favorite 'strong leaders'.

So, I'm not the only one noticing the trend here....

It could easily happen here. Trump has already packed the Supreme Court, who so far has issued no significant checks on his powers.

#3 | Posted by e1g1, Strange thing about lifetime appointments- many do not preform as expected. No checks on his power? Ever heard of congress?

The answer is obviously to send them our portable Symmes hole AKA Kissinger. I'm certain people and money will begin disappearing.

"Hungarian Legal Scholar: 'Hungary Is No Longer a Democracy'"

So, democracy is just an illusion here in the United States. The last two Republican Presidents got fewer votes than their opponents. The EC is totally undemocratic. It is just an old vestige left over from the slave era. Republicans love it because they actually don't believe in democracy, never have, never will.

If slavery is compatible with democracy, then so is a public health order.

It happened to us after 9/11. In a panic we allowed the Patriot Act to become law. We have never been able to get rid of it since.

Some Greek guy about 300BC stated that "Law is reason divorced from passion". Every bad law this country has passed have been in a moment of fear, panic or passion.

"Every bad law this country has passed have been in a moment of fear, panic or passion."

This seems like would apply to both Prohibition, and repealing Prohibition.

#11 | Posted by snoofy, No, the repeal was very reasoned and deliberate. If you have forgotten or never knew, the federal government deliberately poisoned thousands of it's own citizens by "denaturing" alcohol. Denatured alcohol is created by adding poisons to grain alcohol. Nice stuff like benzine and formaldehyde was added to prevent people from consuming it. It did not prevent people from doing so. Over 10,000 died.
