President Donald Trump has removed State Department Inspector General Steve Linick and replaced him with an ally of Vice President Mike Pence -- the latest in a series of moves against independent government watchdogs in recent months.

The deconstruction of the administrative state is going along swimmingly:

Linick is relatively well-respected at the State Department, and his office stays busy, regularly churning out a range of inspections, audits and other types of reports.

His departure is likely to further deepen morale problems that have festered at State since the start of the Trump administration, when many career diplomats found themselves shunted aside and cast as a "deep state" bent on undermining a Trump.

Two of Linick's most-read reports over the past year involved alleged retaliation by Trump political appointees against career employees.

"Not long after Linick's firing was announced, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee said Linick had opened an investigation into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"I have learned that the Office of the Inspector General had opened an investigation into Secretary Pompeo," Engel said in his statement denouncing the firing. Engel did not provide any further details about the scope of this investigation or how he learned about it.

A senior State Department official confirmed that Pompeo made the recommendation that Linick be removed, but the official did not know the reasons why.

The inspector general investigation Engel referenced centers around possible misuse of a political appointee at the State Department to perform personal tasks for Pompeo and his wife, a Democratic congressional aide with knowledge of the investigation told CNN.

Engel's revelation of an investigation into Pompeo opened by Linick shows the seriousness of a surprising move that mirrors the dismissal of former Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson last month. The firing comes as Trump continues his attacks on internal government oversight. The President has shown repeated hostility to any independent scrutiny from within the government..." excerpts

He actually does just think this whole thing is another game show, doesn't he?

Wow.

Did he at least send Susan Collins flowers afterwards?

The Inspector General who filed Rick Bright's whistleblower complain is probably next.

Surely by now any Inspector General knows that his job is on the line.

He's preparing the ground for some sort of decisive action that gives him control of government generally and allows him to stay in office regardless of outcome in November.

Trump can be as dumb as a bag of hammers, but he's got some power-behind-the-throne people who know where they're going and who they want Trump to be.

Trump has trouble knowing what to do fifteen minutes in advance. AG Bar, however, foresees a time when Donald's face is on the five-dollar bill instead of Lincoln, and that while Donald is still alive.

Who set up a system where one gets to chose the folks that inspect and regulate them?

Moscow Mitch. When they gave him a pass after impeachment he knew it was Carte Blanche afterwards. So, once again, it is the Republican Party who have sold out democracy. After this, if you are still a Republican then you are part of the problem.

Is America truly a free nation? Does rule of law and limited government really exist? Why are the same people who "worship" America's freedoms and system of government systematically destroying the very things that make this system possible?

This looks very much like a coup in slow motion. They are getting their ducks in a row to make some kind of a big play.

This will not end well. Or peacefully.

They've removed all oversight and made two arguments : 1. the president can do whatever he wants. 2. Nobody is allowed to investigate the president.

We now have a king.

He won't get away with it.

Agreed. Watch the polls in swing states getting closer to November. If they don't favor Trump, and if his other ongoing tricks don't work, he and his Running Dogs will do something.

Because, as has been oft said, Trump understands that he dies in office or he dies in prison.

You are talking about people who worship a guy who says he is in total command of all things but simultaneously responsible for nothing.

In other words, the IG was doing his job.

And Trump hates when government officials do their jobs.

This entire -------- of a "presidency" has been defined by bad faith governance and attacks on people trying to perform their Constitutional, statutory and historical function.

Thanks, Republicans. You finally drowned government in a bathtub by coalescing around the flaming bag of ---- Putin left on America's doorstep.

Are you proud?

They haven't gone anywhere. They're just lurking and licking their wounds.

Did you see how fast and vigorously they were posting in the Tara Reade threads (when they first thought there was blood in the water).

They want it to be dangerous.

This gives Trump the chance to finally hurt the people that need to be hurt, without the courts getting in the way.

Border camps were just a warm-up.
