Joe Biden will go into November with the most left-wing Democratic agenda in a generation, figures on all wings of the party agree, as his platform is shaped by economic crisis and the need to enthuse younger voters.

A year ago the former vice-president told wealthy donors that he would not "demonise anybody who's made money" and that "nothing would fundamentally change" for them if he became president.

Yet last week, determined to win over younger leftwingers who previously favoured Bernie Sanders, Mr Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, said that his goal was "not just to rebuild the economy but to transform it". If Mr Biden defeats President Trump in November that transformation would include trillions of dollars of fiscal stimulus, vast investment in infrastructure and green projects, new laws protecting workers' rights, and expanded healthcare and childcare programmes.

The Democratic Party's quadrennial convention is likely to thrash out the details in August but any stimulus proposed by a Biden presidency would far outstrip the $800 billion injected into the economy in 2009, which Barack Obama delegated Mr Biden to oversee.

Faiz Shakir, Mr Sanders's former campaign manager, said that Mr Biden had been "amenable and open" to bringing the left on board. "Because he hasn't fleshed [policies] out as deeply as some other candidates over the course of the primary, that's an opportunity," he told the Vox website.

It is not only the left of the party urging structural change though. Mark Warner, a centrist senator from Virginia, said that moderates had begun to think "exponentially bigger" about overhauling the economy. Mr Warner, a former venture capitalist whose estimated net worth of about $90 million makes him the richest Democrat in Congress, told The New York Times: "There is a recognition that this event [the pandemic] is more transformative than 2008, more transformative than 9/11, more transformative than the fall of the Berlin Wall."

Michael Bennet, a moderate senator from Colorado who ran a lacklustre presidential campaign, agreed that the prospects for wealth redistribution were greater than after the 2008 financial crash. "I think there was not the same recognition ten years ago that there is today that we've had 50 years of an economy that only works for people at the very top," he said.

A clear direction of travel is shown by six policy task forces that Mr Biden, 77, has unveiled. Originally conceived as a package of concessions to secure Mr Sanders's support, the party's progressive wing has been pleasantly surprised by the people enlisted to them.

Most notably, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 30, a rising star leftwinger from New York, will co-chair the climate change task force with John Kerry, 76, the former secretary of state and 2004 presidential nominee. Last year Ms Ocasio-Cortez sponsored an attempt to pass a "green new deal" through the House of Representatives. It called for a move to solely renewable energy sources, significant government investment in electric cars and high-speed rail and upgrading all buildings to be as energy-efficient as possible.

Even Biden allies appointed to the task forces are encouraging for the Democratic left. For the economic task force Mr Biden selected Jared Bernstein, his economic adviser when he was vice-president. Mr Bernstein was seen as a progressive counterweight to the more Wall Street-friendly voices in the Obama White House. He has praised the UK's furlough scheme.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign's attacks on Mr Biden have intensified, with Donald Trump Jr suggesting that his father's rival is a "----------". Mr Trump Jr, 42, has established a reputation as the most aggressive member of the family on social media. His latest attack suggests that, with less than six months to go until the election on November 3, the campaign could plumb new depths after the bitter clashes with Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Mr Trump Jr posted an image on Instagram of Mr Biden with the words "See you later, alligator!" and below it was a photograph of an alligator with the words: "In a while, pedophile!"

After the post was widely criticised, Mr Trump Jr said he was "joking around". Responding to a CNN journalist who accused him of spreading lies, he tweeted: "I'm sorry that you're more upset (Triggered!) about a joke meme than you are @JoeBiden's gross habit of touching & sniffing young girls."

Andrew Bates, a spokesman for Mr Biden, said: "No repulsive, manipulative tactic will change the subject from how almost 90,000 Americans have paid for Donald Trump's coronavirus negligence with their lives and how the booming economy he inherited from the Obama-Biden administration is now suffering from depression-level job losses."

Let's hope it's enough to assuage those BBros who don't listen to Bernie about whom to vote for, and those at least semi-conscious moderate right and indie voters that care about their country.

#3 Projection. Jr knows his dad is a pedo. The photos of Ivanka giving Trump lap dances are disgusting. I don't want to think about the perverted things Trump and Epstein did in private with little girls.

Covid and Trumps pathetic response has given the US a chance to stop its decline and looting by crony capitalists (mobsters).
American infrastructure is crappy. Perfect time to upgrade and create American jobs.

Biden needs all the help he can get. At least he seems to know it. This Bernie bro is gonna vote him in. I hope it helps. He can't do it alone.

Whatever Joe needs to do get out the lazy ass youth vote he needs. If he needs to pretend he wants to give out the free ---- like Bernie promised then so be it.

It's all a lie and has zero chance of going anywhere once elected.....but winning is what we need him to do right now.

Let's hope it's enough to assuage those BBros who don't listen to Bernie about whom to vote for,

Bernie Bros didn't even show up to vote for Bernie.

Or they did and the DNC cooked the books.

Considering Biden didn't do any campaigning and won the DNC primaries.

Maybe he's hoping for more of the same in the general.

Who knows.

Hillary campaigned on not being Trump and lost.

Biden is using the same strategy.

Guess it has to work, this time.

#14 Trump is the accused pedophile rapist, not Biden. Trump got lap dances from Ivanka, not Biden. Trump hired hookers that looked like Ivanka, not Biden.

Trump is an ---------- pedophile. No wonder his base loves him, he has what they want.

#18 | Posted by bored You have to admit Biden has never stood for anything except his service to the banks. He has been in office for 50 years and yet, not one bill with his name on it. A back bencher that got seniority isn't much of a resume. The big problem is that he can not speak, let alone debate. Someone is going to get gutted at the debate. It isn't Trump. ---------- pedophile? I seriously doubt that. Stop getting your "news" from Democratic Underground.

"C'mon man,we know who you're really gonna vote for. And it ain't Biden."

Biden seemed like a pretty good choice when compared to Trump.

I think Eb is right, Biden is simply telling the mouth-breathers in the Bernie camp what they want to hear. He's too smart to actually go through with any of that silliness.

- that silliness.

To Randians like MB, a level playing field, fairness, and security is silliness... like FDR's policies were silliness rather than as American as apple pie.
