CTV Montreal reports that churches and church space not being used explicitly for the purpose of worship is now taxable property, and is to be treated as any other property as far as taxes are concerned. As one might expect, those benefitting from the tax exempt status enjoyed by churches are not happy.

Good. I've never understood how religions get to run businesses and then claim exemption.

Tax all charities on all income, eliminate all charitable tax deductions. I will happily bump my donations up to cover the difference.

" eliminate all charitable tax deductions."

The Trump Tax Code has done that work for you!

Basically, about 94% of tax filers could donate five thousand bucks, and it wouldn't move the needle.

A good start.

#3 Is that true for corps and trusts?

Yay for Montreal! Good to see that some people are awakening from the religion induced coma.

@#1 ... I've never understood how religions get to run businesses and then claim exemption. ...

I remember back in the "Moral Majority" days, local religious groups (it was difficult to call them "churches") would build and run rather massive entertainment facilities. The facilities encompassed stages, playing courts, bowling alleys, etc. All free of tax because they were "religious facilities."

Other facilities in the town(s) went out of business because they could not compete, additionally the town(s) had to raise the tax rate in order to continue to provide the needed emergency services to the town (including the religious facilities.

Danni,

"Good to see that some people are awakening from the religion induced coma."

Appreciate your honesty admitting you see this as having more to with turning against religion than anything to do with a "fair tax system".

Danni,

I would venture to say most people (atheists and Christians) will see this as an attack on religion.

...see this as an attack on religion.

Why?

Redial,

I think Danni pretty well summed it up.

#12 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2020-05-21 02:14 PM | Reply

She didn't say anything about an attack on religion.

Redial,

OK..if you say so.

Bill, the deal was we wouldn't tax them if they stayed out of politics. They didn't stay out of politics so they should have to pay taxes just like the rest of us.

Danni,

You say that now.

Sure...you follow up with a different thought out perspective now.

I know the truth and so do you.

By this logic, when we raise Federal income taxes on Amazon from zero to a number greater than zero, it's an attack on Amazon.

"I know the truth and so do you."

I know that some religious folks support Donald Trump in spite of his obvious character flaws. To me they seem opportunistic rather than spiritual.

The Bible says to pay taxes. Charity tax deductions for Churches is anti Christian.

#17 Amazon doesn't pay taxes because they don't have net profits. That is by design.

The really rich don't pay income taxes.

Tax wealth instead.
