Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

For the last several years, the Pew Research Center has been tracking the US public's views on scientists and science-related issues. This year's survey finds a continuation of a worrisome trend: the US public has a rising trust in scientists, but it's mostly due to an increased respect among Democrats.

Wow those results thoroughly disturbing.

Republicans have largely gone back to pre-enlightnment times when a simple belief in something is enough to make it true.

Republicans have been there since Reagan, JPW.

That's when the GOP welcomed the Christian Right into the party. And there is no larger reservoir of magical thinking in America than the Evangelical Christians.

The closing sentence of the cited article is interesting...

...But there is some good news, in that younger Republicans are much more moderate in their views toward scientists, falling somewhere between their elders and Democrats.

@#3 ... isn't that the pure definition of faith? ...

I've always thought of a simple definition of "faith" along the lines of the following...

faith - it is not as much what you believe in, but more that you just believe in it.

#4 - You have to hope younger people will be more enlightened. But as we've seen quite clearly on not only Covid but also climate change, pollution, vaccines and many other issues, the right wing has shown an incredibly unshakable adherence to beliefs, many of them easily disproved conspiracy theories, simply because they want them to be true. And they find each other online and reinforce those beliefs.

@#8 ... Good. Scientists ought to rule this country. ...

I am not convinced of that.

Scientists are trained to look at facts, evidence and data, and make conclusions.

There also needs to be a social aspect incorporated into the ruling of a country.

I would say, however, that the input of scientists is needed in the rule of a country.

Unfortunately, this discussion is currently skewed because Pres Trump has all but abdicated leadership during the COVID-19 crisis, causing the role of the scientists in leadership to be unduly exaggerated.

We don't need the scientists to lead this Country.

We need a real leader. A leader who will take into account the input from the scientists and others in making decisions.

The role of the scientists in all this needs to be balanced with the roles of others. A real leader does that balancing.

Unfortunately, we have no real leader, we have a re-election-driven narcissst who does not care about anyone but himself.

Hence the current emphasis upon the scientists. Nature abhors a vacuum.

Republicans have largely gone back to pre-enlightnment times when a simple belief in something is enough to make it true.

They have no choice because facts, science, logic, reasoning don't support their agenda which is to put as much money and power into as few hands as possible.

Looks like the left is at last kicking to the curb antivaxxers and fully embracing medical science.
