Honest question Snoofy, is San Diego area very racist ( I know people are people ) but it's gotta be different than say Mississippi or such.

The area is huge, San Diego County is nearly the same population Connecticut and larger than Iowa; 3.3 million. It's got its ups and downs like anywhere else. There's a suburb called Santee, affectionately known as Klantee, or as I prefer Santucky, which is where twice now people have worn Nazi masks or KKK hoods as their mask in the ---- grocery store. So, sure, there's plenty of racists here. We don't have open carry so maybe they're not as open with other things too?
However in San Diego it's heavily tempered by two things. First, in my experience, there's just not a lot of black people here. The way the South has a large minority of black people, that's how Southern California has Hispanic people. Blacks here seem about as rare as Asians in the deep South. Second, a lot of the black people that are here, are here because they're in the Navy. This is the Navy's town; they are the 800lb gorilla. As such, the military does a pretty good job of keeping racism tamped down or at least under wraps. The uniform definitely keeps a lot of the blanket stereotype racism at bay.
When I think of racism in the South, I think of small towns with generations of entrenched poverty, and racist police and judges whose job is to keep it that way. Southern California is not like that anymore except in a few enclaves such as Huntington Beach. That's not to say the people aren't bigoted, but it feels like the cops typically can find better stuff to do than just harass blacks; for example, they're pretty good at harassing the homeless population, which of course is blacker than average. The solution to both poverty and racism is dilution, and since this place has grown like 500% in the past 40 years or so, at least the racism has been diluted pretty good.
I've only lived here eight years and I don't really pay much attention to local politics; it's the same as any rich area, developers trying to defy the county plan and jam in more crappy suburbs. There's bound to be tons of egregious racial history I know nothing about.
