Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Thomas L. Friedman: If you thought the volume on the Trump-Twitter-Fox noise distraction machine was turned up extra loud in the past few weeks, it was not only to deflect attention from the nearly 100,000 Americans who've died from Covid-19, but also from the confirmation that on President Trump's watch our country suffered the first deadly terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11 that was planned abroad.

There were likely worse Secretaries of State in the early years of the nation, when individuals could conduct their own fiefdoms and empire building outside of their role to the executive branch, but the article makes a good argument of being the worst in the 21st century.

Name a current Cabinet member, confirmed, or temporary, who is not the worst ever.

An example of a harmful early-America Secretary of State:

Thomas Jefferson used his position as secretary of state to advance French interests, both covertly and overtly, whenever possible. He had a passionate attachment to France, particularly its murderous revolutionary government.

#3 steering the department in the wrong direction is bad, but Pompeo is even worse because he destroyed the department.

Definitely not trying to minimize the negative impact of Pompeo.

In 2014, 25 International Relations professors held a review of Secretary of States (pre-2016) and ranked John Kerry as one of the most "ineffective," through history, though being ineffective is better than being dangerous to the whole institution.

To append to the above: I like John Kerry. I'm only wondering out loud whether there is a heavy recency bias in public opinion on examining current Secretaries of State, which automatically skews negative.

Kerry was about perfect as Secretary of State.

Better than Clinton or Warren Christopher.

Clinton wanted WAR, writ large. I'm still not sure Trump is worse than she would have been as president. He hasn't been eager for Iraq scale invasions and I think she would have been.

As secretary of state she destroyed Libya, and was generally eager for foreign interventions.

Nasty piece of work.

So YOU think Iraq two,in Iran or Venezuela or somewhere else is a good idea? If Hillary had been elected and started such a massive aggressive war would you think her less evil than Trump? I wouldn't. Now she may not have done such a horrible thing if elected, and then would have just been massively, but competently, corrupt.

Either way I'm not feeling the love for another Clinton presidentcy.

I'm not so sure about Big Mike being the worst. There is Henry Kissinger, war criminal...

#9 this is why we can't have nice things. Hrc ruined Libya? Not Khadaffi? That's funny.

Henry Kissinger is still drawing breath? War criminal Henry Kissinger likely can NEVER go abroad again if there are warrants for his arrest, and I believe there are such warrants. H.K. in an orange jumpsuit and irons is a great mind-image. Too bad his co-conspirator, NIXON is already dead!

Wait, a Liberal outlet is reporting that a Conservative politician is the worst ever?? OMG. WOW!!!!! No partisan media outlet has ever called the other party or politician the worst ever. Man, this is so newsworthy. This is an epiphany...nay, this is a revelation! This article should win every award there is to give away for major news accomplishments. A parade should be made in every city that celebrates the genius of this article.

I stop by here from time to time to see bold and daring opinions and Snoofy seldom shies away from taking a strong stand.

Better than Clinton? She was so good she didn't need an Inspector General in the State Department.

Way to deliver the goods, Snoof! Warren Christopher is weeping.

ROTFLMAO

John ------- Kerry

You madman!

Every appointment by Donald Trump was and still is, "the worst ever" and was chosen for only one purpose ~ to weaken and then dismantle the underpinnings of the fabric of America.

And that's not partisan hyperbole. It's a fact.

Pompeo is the worst? Maybe.

Most corrupt? Definitely.

Fat Nixon only hires the worst. It is a reflection on who he really is.

Here's the simple way to evaluate Pompeo. What did the Iraq war accomplish. Now they are ginning up war with Iran which is twice the population of Iraq. They put sanction on Iran which harms who? The people of Iran. This administration is simply insane.

"Too bad his co-conspirator, NIXON is already dead!"

But if you said that during the Vietnam War they called us traitors.
Same thing when Bush was getting ready to invade Iraq.
Hindsight is always 20/20 but the right still thinks they are the patriots although they get it completely wrong every time they get power.
