President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened that Republicans will try to close down social media platforms a day after Twitter, for the first time, added a fact check to two of his tweets, specifically ones concerning his unsubstantiated claims about widespread mail-in voting fraud.

How soon until he's chewing carpets?

Is anyone thinking about the nuclear codes or has Trump too densely packed the WH with yes men?

Twitter should just delete his account, problem solved.

And exactly HOW does he plan to do this?

Magic?

He'd just start using the emergency broadcast system. I'm actually surprised he doesn't.

This exemplifies how the US loses standing in the world.
Of course, that's what the Deplorables want. For the US to lose standing in the world.

Trump is welcome to try.

He is losing to Biden in the polls, so that must be bad for Democrats. Gotta keep the campaign interesting, you know!

He is absolutely going to get worse, and his actions are going to show how his mental illness is shared by many of his followers. This is "start a war" territory, but COVID-19 came and kicked him in the head. He's flailing around right now because he can't control the virus. Sweeping 100K+ deaths under the rug (I expect that number to double, maybe triple) won't work, and hopefully blaming Nancy Pelosi for it won't either. Who knows? He is mentally unfit and nobody seems to be willing to admit it.

He (Trump)is mentally unfit and nobody seems to be willing to admit it.

#14 | Posted by chuffy at 2020-

Lots of people see it, likely a large majority.

But Trump is enabled by his followers. Who, as you correctly note, have their own mental health issues.

Where's all our Constitutional Conservatives to talk about how private businesses have the right to operate as they see fit?

If that statement wasn't so sad in it's ignorance, I would flag it funny.

"He's saying the only way to protect free speech is to kill free speech?"

Not exactly. He wants to kill everybody's free speech but his own. It a rite that comes with the territory when you're practicing to become a dictator.

But he's too stupid and transparently incompetent to lead anyone who isn't a blithering dolt.

Maybe someone should invite him to that site Boaz is setting up? "Hero of the stupid" would be a step up from whatever Trump would be there.

Here is a link to a NY Times article that implies what Trump's Executive Order may do.

www.nytimes.com

The article suggests that the EO will "curtail the legal protections that shield social media companies from liability for what gets posted on their platforms" making it easier for federal regulators to argue that companies like Facebook, Google, YouTube and Twitter are suppressing free speech.

Other than significantly driving up the legal headaches for the companies, this layman doesn't see anything that can shut them down prior to an election. The EO will certainly be litigated and, I'm guessing, be reversed on appeal. Given the length of time it takes to resolve legal battles, it is highly unlikely that anything will shut them down prior to the election. In the interim, Twitter should become even more aggressive in fact checking and labelling Trump's tweets as lies.

Aside from the fact that Congress probably needs to pass a law to actually curtail those protections, wouldn't this create an even stronger argument to ban users who consistently violate Twitter's terms of service, i.e. Trump?

So President zero posts libelous stuff on his Twitter and wants to make it easier to sue Twitter over his posts

Let's not forgot that Trump tried to fight in court the ability to block users on his Twitter account.
