Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, June 01, 2020

As Trump brings out more military presence and threatens to deploy active-duty U.S. Troops to squash protests, CNN's Don Lemon watches protesters at the White House clashing with the new forces and wonders why the President of the United States won't listen to the Americans literally at his doorstep screaming to be heard: "The people who are out here yelling at the top of their voices, fighting back against police, protesting, they're desperate to be heard. They're desperate to get food on the table. They're desperate to be treated equally under the law. Many of them are desperate to find employment with a pandemic and being shutdown for months. They are desperate to be heard. This president is desperate to try and to keep some kind of order and desperate to be reelected come November and now you have these two forces that are clashing. What I hear in the President's voice, and this is just what I hear, I hear fear -- anytime you are saying you guys are weak, you need to apply force. What are you going to do put a fortress around the White House, put a fortress around America and not engage with the people who are outside of your door screaming: 'Hey we need to be heard. Listen to us' ... The way to stop this is to engage with the people who are screaming at the top of their lungs for you to pay attention. You represent these people who are outside of your door desperate to be heard ... These are Americans. Your constituents. There is a very simple solution to this, listen to the people and that could have been solved a long time ago -- if you just listen and engage the people who are so desperate for you to pay attention to them, to include them."

Police and the National Guard killed another unarmed black man in Louisville last night: David McAtee, who ran a small BBQ business. Police said they were returning fire, apparently from someone other than McAtee. Conveniently, none of the officers had remembered to turn their body cameras on. The mayor fired the police chief today.

I fear what happens tonight.

In blunt remarks rarely heard from an American president, he prodded the chief executives not to be "too careful.'

From Wiki (someone didn't waste any time):

The Insurrection Act of 1807 is a United States federal law (10 U.S.C. 251"255; prior to 2016, 10 U.S.C. 331"335) that governs the ability of the President of the United States to deploy military troops within the United States to suppress civil disorder, insurrection, rebellion and for Trump to start a civil war.

Protester are not the one's fomenting violence. Vandals and opportunists are fomenting violence by and large. Those with criminal intent are using the masses of citizens exercising their constitutional right to protest government injustice to mask their own illicit actions that force binary intellectual midgets like the President and Gracie to make the inflammatory claims that they do.

There is nothing wrong with condemning violence, criminal vandalism and the wanton destruction of property while simultaneously sympathizing and understanding the impassioned pleas of the vast majority of principled opponents of the injustices heaped upon the mountains of victims affected by police brutality.

You know how your spouse will do something to indicate how angry she is about a comment you made or something you did? And you say, honey, calm down! Does that work? Does she ever say, you're right, I should calm down. The answer is no, she never does this. Because you have already ticked her off, and no condescending orders from you are going to be affective.

So think about this for a minute in the context of America. Does anyone really believe a show of force in every city in America is the way to go? How much more cracking down will do the trick to make people "calm down" and "stop being mad" about injustice and inequality?

#68 | Posted by cbob at 2020-06-01 07:42 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

If the Insurrection Act is invoked, then it is not illegal to deploy US troops.

Peaceful protestors need a heads up from the President. If he declares it, give the honest protestors a chance to stay home.

A smart protestor knows that the Insurrection Act is a last resort. Go home. Stay home. When the military comes, only fools choose to stay.

It has come to this. I haven't found anyone finding the cop not guilty of murder. Some cant say it...presumed guilty then for them.

Or enough people will NOT go home, forcing the army to do what, exactly? Shoot them? Arrest them?

Who knows where this is leading?

Look at the past for a clue. Look at Germany in the 20s and 30s. Riots and violence like we are seeing, while interesting and important, pale beside the revolution that COULD occur. All of the seeds are there-economic depression, totalitarian wannabe leader, divided populace.

Fortunately we don't have a fractured parliamentary system. Nor has the economic collapse been here for an extended period. So, if we can hold elections, we can have continuum of government and possibly a return to normalcy. But if ------- decides the election is fraudulent? Who knows. If, god forbid, he wins reelection and there are 4 more years of economic strife and political turmoil? Scary times indeed.

But the dummy had to do it anyway.

PS - The arrests of the other three cops who participated in George Floyd's murder - in broad daylight - will go a long way to ending this.

Trump's rhetoric and threats of using our own military against U.S. citizens has only added gas to the flames. Someone described him as a combination of George Wallace and Richard Nixon, which IMO is spot on.

And he's added the flames on top of 40 million people out of work and a pandemic for which he's done absolutely nothing.

The COVID-19 task force isn't even meeting anymore. Trump's lost interest since he figured out his press conferences weren't helping in his reelection. Now he's using the anger of millions of people over Floyd's death to also further his own personal ambition, and nothing else. He isn't even giving lip service to either Floyd's death or ending the pandemic.

These protests will come to an end in the near future. The pandemic is still here and will kill more hundreds of thousands of Americans. In both instances, Trump couldn't care less.

Dozens of businesses have been burned and looted. Because of COVID-19, thousands of businesses will go out of business thanks to Trump's incompetence and lack of meaningful action. That didn't have to happen either.

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. "Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Statement from Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry on President Donald Trump's use of a church building and the Holy Bible
June 1, 2020

The following is a statement from Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry:

This evening, the President of the United States stood in front of St. John's Episcopal Church, lifted up a bible, and had pictures of himself taken. In so doing, he used a church building and the Holy Bible for partisan political purposes. This was done in a time of deep hurt and pain in our country, and his action did nothing to help us or to heal us.

The bible teaches us that "God is love." Jesus of Nazareth taught, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." The prophet Micah taught that the Lord requires us to "do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God."

The bible the President held up and the church that he stood in front of represent the values of love, of justice, of compassion, and of a way to heal our hurts.

We need our President, and all who hold office, to be moral leaders who help us to be a people and nation living these values. For the sake of George Floyd, for all who have wrongly suffered, and for the sake of us all, we need leaders to help us to be "one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all."

The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

A much higher percentage of protesters were wearing masks than people with Trump during his walk to the church. By far.

Trump, Sec Def, AG, Press Sec, Mark Meadows during church/bible trek and prop bible holding = no masks.

I don't call that a fair comparison.

And also, didn't you notice how many were wearing those cheapo blue things. All they had was a false sense of security in a big crowd like that with people screaming all around them. The louder the voice the stronger the spittle.

"When the military goes in, do you really think the fools will stay home?
Smart protestors will know that during the Insurrection Act being invoked, you stay home.
Those violating law will not stay home. They want to keep it going.
We dont know what another round would mean, but it'll give a cooling period.
#71 | POSTED BY PETROUS AT 2020-06-01 08:59 PM"

Invoking the Insurrection Act, without waiting for a request from the local governor, essentially declares that a state of rebellion is in effect.
Even President Lincoln did not invoke the Insurrection Act. Do you think if he had, the South Carolina Militia would have stood down and "cooled off"?
Even after that armed conflict ended, the wounds continue to affect this nation more than 150 years later.

It's OK, tho'. I'm sure any "unpleasantness" that happens will only last a few months and all will be over before Christmas...

This is trumps America. Disaster compounding upon disaster so that confusion and chaos reign. You can't even remember how we got here...so many disasters! So many disasters!

Two weeks from now will be another disaster to compound this disaster which is an already horrible situation.

It is seeming less and less likely that I will even make It until November to cast my vote to vote this horrid disgusting creature what calls itself a "Stable Genius" out of my life.

His "genius" is destroying America.

The country was desperate before trump, now everyone except the rich and polluters is far more desperate during trump.

Obama was a massive disappointment. He had the responsibility to really fight for change, and he turned out to be a corporate protector and wall street puppet. That made people desperate for change willing to do something as crazy as vote for trump. Black lives matter started under obama and a black attorney general. He did very little with his time in office. He protected the bankers who had just harmed millions of people.

Promising to go back to 2015, when people were already desperate and angry, is not the way to beat trump.

So think about this for a minute in the context of America. Does anyone really believe a show of force in every city in America is the way to go? How much more cracking down will do the trick to make people "calm down" and "stop being mad" about injustice and inequality?

Apparently.

Good luck with that Humpy.

It doesn't have to be "every city." As Dictator he only has to make one or two cities a gruesome example of what will happen to the others.

BTW, he's been taking lessons from Russia and Saudi Arabia.

That doesn't make people calm down. It just makes them shut up about it.

But I do agree with you. America would be a hard nut to crack. Just not impossible.

I see the pattern. And I certainly don't mean to say that there's not a certain amount of injustice in the justice system, mostly directed toward black people. But then I see who is committing all the looting, not to mention the wanton destruction of property, and I have to wonder . . . where is the justice for those victims.
We've watched so many cities burned, so many people die, so much meaningless destruction . . . and the system never changes.
It just seems that there's a better way.
#87 | Posted by Twinpac a

I'm curious, what better way? Peaceful protests have been tried and tried and tried again. Remember Colin Kaerpernick and the abuse he took?

OF COURSE things will escalate to violence. OF COURSE the violence will be started by the fringe. OF COURSE the police will overreact. OF COURSE there will be a small minority that will take advantage and cause destruction way out of proportion to there acts.

But, what, pray tell, can be done differently?

I was screaming it during the primary when we could have nominated someone who would actually change. But I guess for the dem base, having a black best friend was a more important quality in a candidate than actually having a record of fighting against the elites for change.

A candidate whom I always loved, but who has a poor legislative success record and an even worse record of winning national primaries, much less national elections.

"this group" being the only other viable political party in a two party system. And the candidate won the popular vote, lost the EC by a fraction of a fraction of a percent in 3 rust belt states... and would have won other states had BBros done what Bernie asked them to do rather than sulk.

ANYTHING can be described as the factor that WOULD HAVE made hillary win, and all of them are correct. Real liberals refusing to vote for a sellout was THE factor. Hillary's horrible record of bad judgment was THE factor. Hillary's not campaigning in critical states was THE factor. All are true.

No. That wasn't a major fear in 2016 because we won the last 2 elections.

And Hillary had electability issues. Democrats were dumb enough to convince themselves that it was her turn and the rest of the country could look past it because "Hey, Republicans are awful."

It's the fear of electability issues that got Biden nominated this time around. Democrats focused on getting the middle.
