Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, June 03, 2020

About a block away from the police station, protesters had set up a makeshift medical tent situated in the alley next to Farm Burger on Patton Avenue. As protesters started vacating the area to march, Glenna Grant, 33, watched in horror as APD officers destroyed the tent, water bottles and medical supplies. Grant said she and others had set up the medical center and had not planned to protest, but rather provide a safe space for anyone injured during the night. "We had eye wash, sutures, EMTs and doctors," Grant said. "They threw several people to the ground. We were thrown, shouted out, screamed at and treated like criminals. No one resisted."

They're just enforcing Esther Manheimer's orders.

Believe Her. The curfew is mandatory.

It's an 8pm Curfew, put on by the mayor from our Democrat party, during a pandemic slowly going through reopening of the economy, destroying the tent of a group who's entire goal was to violate the curfew and treat curfew violators of injuries.

Sounds like that was going to work out great.

If they were just enforcing the curfew they wouldn't destroy everything. The police chief wouldn't have issued the statement he did, either, saying "We destroyed all their water because water bottles get thrown at the police" and other lame excuses.

If you are wondering why the protests are going to continue, look no further than the police and their actions. They continue to prove they are the problem. Here. Take a look at them "serve and protec" in action:

You mean the Mayor who'd create a curfew that creates more confrontation? I'll throw a few bucks to an opponent if there's a reasonable one in her next election.

FTA: Prentice said they were at a "city-approved medical station" near One World Brewing, and all were wearing clothing "that identified us all clearly as medics." Prentice also noted that the "licensed trauma doctors with us had obtained explicit inclusion under the medical provision of the curfew" to be there.

Hard to blame the mayor when they had explicit inclusion to be there.

No, I said exactly what I meant and referenced exactly what I mean., The truth destroys your attempt to shift blame. Trying to say enforcing a curfew means the police get carte-blanc and can make up excuses for all kinds of outrageous behavior is as irresponsible as the actions of the police. Just stop with the obvious duplicity and dissembling.

"The curfew...prohibits travel upon any public street unless it is for the purpose of seeking medical care, food, or other necessities for yourself or a family member. The curfew does not apply to those working at businesses providing necessary goods and services, or to...medical providers."

Per the article, this was a city-approved medic station. Are you ever right about anything?

Again, --------. Welcome to the regulatory web. They are not care providers. They're people on the corner with a tent. Want to be a care provider, file your 501C for the non-profit and go from there.

#15 Where does the curfew order confine the definition of "medical provider" to those who have filed a 501c?

#16 | Posted by JOE at 2020-06-04 11:40 AM | Reply

Oh boy you really don't get it. People on a corner aren't state approved Health Care Providers. That's who gets to move around despite the curfew. No permit by them has been produced, so it seems they assumed they could just go out and do it. Welcome to what's called Regulatory Burden. They're doing it for free out there so that would make them have to file as a 501C to begin their journey to providing free medical assistance, then go down the state regulatory ladder for licensing for their venture to be a provider. Welcome to big government.

I'm a firm believer that MOST police
are well meaning individuals, who are
placed in very tough positions, in a
country that is bipolar on its best
days, and insane on its worst.

That being said, police units
SERIOUSLY need to start placing
the most calm, even keeled, and
wisest person in charge of each of
these units, because BOY do they
pull some bone-headed, downright
cruel ass gaffs and stunts...

I mean, you can see why people think that
they are dicks... Why?! Because you are
GIVING THEM THE AMMO TO THINK SO...

I agree with that. However, 99.99% of even "well-meaning" cops would cover for a bad cop who did a terrible thing to another human being, because "going along to get along" is more important to these well-meaning cops than doing the right thing and protecting their citizens. That makes them "bad cops," in my opinion.

True. There is a 'Brotherhood of Silence'
and a 'Brotherhood of Presumed Innocence of Police'
within the U.S. Court System. Both of which need
to be abolished and eliminated. Police themselves
should NOT be above the law. What's the old Spiderman
saying..."With tremendous power comes tremendous responsibility"...

Should be the police motto...

Isn't it something how they support curfews but not lockdowns!

No cries for freedom during a curfew, just obedience towards the government, and those who rebel get what they deserve.

You know what this tells us?

With proper Federal leadership, we could have kept our COVID-19 death toll to a few thousand, like South Korea or Germany.

From the article: Prentice said they were at a "city-approved medical station" near One World Brewing, and all were wearing clothing "that identified us all clearly as medics." Prentice also noted that the "licensed trauma doctors with us had obtained explicit inclusion under the medical provision of the curfew" to be there.

THEY HAD ------- CITY APPROVAL TO BE THERE. THE CITY EXPLICITLY SAID THEY COULD BE THERE DURING THE PROTEST TO PROVIDE MEDICAL CARE.

Stop blaming the mayor.

#27 | Posted by Sycophant at 2020-06-04 02:03 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

the problem with this article is "Prentice said".

There is no corroboration of the claim in the report, and to be honest the reading of the rest of her claim sounds like word salad, and that she is trying to claim to be under the wording of the order because there are licensed doctors there.

Maybe I'm wrong, and she has all the paperwork to be an 'official medical tent'. But there is no need for an official medical tent after curfew, so I have a hard time imagining that City Hall ok'd this. Seems a lot more likely that she is playing games with the wording like Joe was above.

Additional reading I did find that they had a verbal agreement. No mention of who agreed to it if they were authorized to make such an agreement and how it might have been communicated.

Even so the destruction right at the beginning of curfew with no warning is troublesome. Pretty much everywhere that has a curfew has been warning peaceful protesters before action is taken.

What worries me is Asheville is about 50/50 hippies and red necks. I suspect, but can't prove, that this was an excuse for the red necks to beat up those dirty hippies. If this adds culture war to the racial element it will get uglier quickly.

#29 | Posted by TaoWarrior at 2020-06-04 03:10 PM | Reply

#29 Thanks for the insight. And agreed, there has to be a better way of shutting the tent down, if in their estimation it didn't belong there. I get getting in front of the looting, but it's not like you can protest til 7:59:59, and be out of the area at 8:00:01, so there has to be some way of interacting with those that had proven to be there peacefully.

Mayor Esther Manheimer said:

"I am aware of the incident involving officers destroying the medical supplies of demonstrators, including water bottles, food and other supplies," Manheimer wrote. "Council has asked for an explanation of why that occurred.

"We are a city that cares, and I want to thank all of our officers who have taken a knee and worked to protect us," Manheimer continued. "But this was a disappointing moment in an otherwise peaceful evening."
