Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

David McAtee, owner of Yaya's BBQ, was a beloved fixture in the Russell neighborhood of Louisville, Ky., remembered as a pillar of the community and known to give out his food free of charge, even to local police officers. His death at the hands of law enforcement has come as a shock to those who knew him.

The Body Cams just happened to be turned off...for everyone...? Or were they deleted?

And the guy who serves food to cops for free allegedly fired at them?

But don't worry, my Republican friends. No one involved in the murder will even get a letter in their file or be charged with a crime.

Inexcusable that the body cams were off. The police chief lost his job over this.

The NYT did an excellent job synchronizing the various pieces of footage. Mr. McAtee's apparent willingness to, at the very least, wave a gun around at the law during a curfew in which cops are crawling all over town, edgy and anxious, does not paint him in a good light.

On the other hand, there was no reason for police to start firing rubber bullets at folks who were simply hanging out at a BBQ joint. Curfew or not, that was a wildly errant escalation of what looked like a normal night at a busy intersection. David James' comments questioning the officers' and National Guardsmen's aggressive tactics were on the mark. David is the city council president and a longtime former cop who happens to be black. I've known David for many years, and I can tell you he was well respected as a cop and, if anything, has historically been more supportive of the status quo than most others in Louisville's black community would like. In other words, he is not somebody who cries wolf. He feels the pain the McAtee family is feeling. This is going to be tough to resolve to everyone's satisfaction.
