One of the worst and most ironic things we do in this country is not talking about politics in "polite" company in order to "keep the peace". When we avoid talking politics this is what we get.

It's sad that this kind of education is still necessary in 2020.

Listening is asking a lot.
Especially when it comes to race.

The act of listening is a powerful way of indicating both humility and openness. Resisting the urge to respond, disagree, or make points of your own is often the most difficult act of discipline and self control a person can exercise. We all seem to think that we know so much, or somehow know it all. It is hard to accept that in many ways, we know nothing.

Just out of curiosity, who lays down their guard to listen?

Is it everyone?

I ask because 80 years ago, I had relatives in a concentration camp in Latvia. Some are still alive.

Is there something they need to atone for?

Is there something they need to atone for?

How should we know?
Have you tried asking them?
No, you're too much of a coward.

"Just out of curiosity, who lays down their guard to listen?"

Your comment underscores the difference between hearing and listening.

When someone says their cries fell on deaf ears, it doesn't mean their cries weren't heard. It meant nobody listened.

Kaepernick taking a knee fell on deaf ears. Everyone heard, few listened. Roger Goddell didn't listen.

Your relatives should be listened to as well. Moder8 is correct listening is very powerful. You have to be open though. It certainly opened my eyes. EVERYONE should lay down their guard and listen to people different from themselves. This isn't just a one way thing. There is no perfect or easy answer.
