After more than a week of protests against police brutality and unrest that left parts of the city burned, a growing chorus of elected officials, civic leaders and residents in Minneapolis are urging the city to break up the Police Department and reimagine the way policing works.

I live in Germany. I've seen police cars on occasion, but they don't pull you over. I wouldn't be able to tell you what a uniformed police officer looks like, if I didn't live next to one.

This is not "defunding the police.

This is a refocusing the police on their "Protect and Serve" motto.

Policing isn't going to change unless they change their hiring practices. Most police departments look to recruit vets whenever possible. Especially combat vets. There is certain vibe in departments that is hard to explain but it's an us vs them mentality.Going on patrol is like getting ready for war mentality. Everyone is a potential suspect and should be treated harshly.

It will be important to not arm them and train them like military. So far they appear to only escalate situations so they can escalate force. The exact opposite is needed.

#2 The only combat vets who approve of what the police did to George Floyd are your Eddie Gallagher types.

You know, psycho killers.

A city with no law enforcement?

Is that what they're proposing?

Or am I misreading their idea?

Do what they proposed in my little burg when the cops got too big for their britches (both figuratively and literally): fire them all and contract with the county Sheriff to do the policing.

I only know of one Metropolitan Community that ever tried anything like this.

It was 1972 and Munich Germany was determined to have the nicest friendliest kindest unarmed police force in history in order to convince the world Germany had changed and was no longer the Nazi war machine of the past.

Need I go on?

A small town once fired their crooked cops and hired accountable private security. They have lived in peace since.

Or maybe that's total -------- but it sounds good.

And then one day as the smoke cleared, we looked around dazed and said, "Why didn't someone call the cops?"

I thought the reason for civilians to be armed is that the police only show up after the crime, to file reports, too late to protect the victims. So tell me again why we need armed cops.
