This is the aspect of life I have the most difficulty with.
I wish the best to all of Nullifidian's friends and family - from the depths of my heart.
Sure, he was a jackass and contrarian, and I know this is part of life, and it really, really sucks.
So glad I had years of exchanges with him.
Sure the last few not so much, but that now seems so insignificant.

Thank you, Nulli.

Sad if true.

His last post would have been, "God bless you, Boris Johnson." Which would be ironic in all sorts of ways. And I think he would be very happy with that.

My condolences to the friends and family of Nullifidian.

His first comment here was on May 7, 2004:

"That's probably correct. Rudy is giving quite a performance as the ignorant, barely literate bigot."

He was responding in a discussion about gay marriage legalization to a user named Rudy who had written, "ALL HOMO/FEMMINAZI. Hey if it feels good, do it. Maybe you could all get AIDS."

He posted 63,810 comments here.

I got on his bad side when I had to start the moderation policy and profanity filtering because it was the only way to stay in ad networks. I don't think I ever fully got on his good side again, but he was a memorable contributor here and I'm sad to hear this news. It reminds me of others we've lost like Briwo and Zataoichi.

In my mind, I must have confused him with someone else. Rcade said he came here in 2014, but I thought he was here when I got here in 2007. Plus, I thought he was a liberal intellectual.

I really enjoyed him. We went nose to nose many times over the years but there was always respect.

I realize he became frustrated with liberals and the democratic party in general and it appeared he switched sides.

He didn't. His disdain for the GOP never changed nor for some absurd many conservative ideologies. He didn't get more nasty...he just changed the direction of where it went.

He was more vocal about his disdain for his own side than the other side. It generated a lot of animosity towards him. Quite frankly, I respected that because few here have the spine to call out their own party like that.

He was more vocal about his disdain for his own side than the other side.

Personally, I had trouble seeing him as someone who remained on the left.

If all you express is disdain for your own side it's hard to see you as someone who remains on that side. Particularly in the age of Trump.

To me he just seemed alienated from his former side and disinterested in being equally critical of the other side, like David Horowitz quitting liberalism and making an entire career spanning decades out of hating liberals.

No offense intended by these remarks. It's just my personal viewpoint on a longtime contributor here.

-Personally, I had trouble seeing him as someone who remained on the left.

Where did he take up for a GOP or conservative policy.

Tax cuts for high income, lower minimum wage, pro-life, etc.....none of that. He didn't advocate for any of that.

Nor did he stump for particular republicans from what I saw.

He simply choose to challenge hypocrisy and smugness from the left, but that made it seem like he supported hypocrisy on the right.....but I swear I never saw that.

That doesn't mean it didn't happen and if someone can post it, fine.

Bummer! RIP, Nulli.

Like RCADE, I feel like Nulli had become so unreasonably biased against the side he was allegedly allied with that in all practicality he had left liberalism behind completely.

He and I had several clashes in recent years, usually concerning what I perceived as undue cynicism from him.

But he was relentless and passionate, as well as highly intelligent and well educated. Honestly I often thought he'd be one of the most interesting people on the DR to meet offline, enjoying a couple of beverages or something, talking about music.

This is my last sentiment about him, because, aside from the wierd politics, I liked the guy. At least I think I did. Who knows if I would like to meet him IRL..... I liked him in the forum we have...

The reason why I say I liked him is because he never made me draw my sword on him. There are some people, antagonists even, who can debate without violence. He was one of those people. I can debate with or without violence, but I never got violent toward him, because his debate was mostly intelligent and sometimes funny.

I can't think of a very much higher praise

Mackris told the story of how they had worked together on a project involving cell phone network development... Nulli on the social impact, and apparently he chose Bill O'Reilly in relation to Mackris' handle.

I took his demonizing of libs after being one here for years as a way to differentiate himself from the pack... at first. Then it seemed he had really reversed his outlook on a lot of things. Whatever.

We were compared to Statler and Waldorf here more than once, and that's sort of how I saw it. I don't put any effort into contradicting people here who's opinion I haven't at least at some point respected.

I agree with Eberly's comment, I always thought that Nulli's positions on the GOP never changed but his view of the Left, especially after Cheatolini was elected, became just as critical for reasons that he alone knew.

A few months back there was a thread here (don't know if it made it to the front page) along the lines of ~Who on DR would you like to have a beer with?~

I said Nulli, because when I have a beer I like to listen to music, and Nulli's taste in and knowledge of classic jazz piano was in a musical genre I enjoy a lot.

Fffk man.

This wasn't news I wanted to read.

Nulli was one of the first posters on the DR I enjoyed reading and generally found myself agreeing with. He was very well read and had great taste in music. I remember him recalling protesting Nixon. I'm assuming he was 20 years, or so, older than me. Which. Isn't old.

I hadn't agreed with him on much since Trump took office.

I know he was staying away from the DR since Andrea was banned. But, I always expected to see him posting again, someday.

My condolences to his friends and family.

I agree but surely you can understand why you're accused of such. Nulli is a great example of this......he was someone who aspired to very little conservative values or the GOP platform at all, yet so many here believed he switched sides.

Your spirited challenges and attacks of the right and specifically right leaning posters here will always draw accusations like that.

If I am honest, his death does cause me to have a moment of reflection. On several occasions when particularly annoyed or offended by Nulli I stated that I would not shed a tear if a piano were to fall on him. God's inevitable piano which eventually falls on all of us has indeed fallen on him. No, I do not shed a tear. Not sure if you were around during the era of Zatoichi. I believe you were. Could be wrong.

When he passed, RCade posted his obituary. With his family's consent.

It was a well written obituary.

He was an intelligent man and clearly raised an intelligent family.

I'd assume you'd need permission from family before posting anything about fellow posters.

From Jeff J..

I have a lot of great memories of Nulli over the years. When he was a bona fide liberal, he coaxed me into purchasing and reading A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. Around that time he commented he was rereading Atlas Shrugged by Rand just to keep his mind open and refreshed as to how "the other side" viewed the role of government in the economy and our lives. I personally had a lot of great discussions with him both political and on stuff like music, movies, etc.

A number of people on this thread and on this site in general noted a change in him over the past 2 or 3 years. As far as his political outlook I think I can share a little insight. He was super-excited about Hugo Chavez. He thought Chavez had the right approach and we were finally going to see a government-heavy control of the economy finally work. Keep in mind the Scandinavian countries are not highly regulated and certainly don't own the means of production the way Chavez was moving toward. I remember telling him that I thought Venezuela would end up like Cuba given its trajectory. He told he that he really didn't see it that way but if it happened, he'd be right there with me to condemn it. I believe the total failure of the Chavez experiment is what really drove a bit of realignment of his thinking.
[6:24 PM]
He was a mix of modern liberalism/progressivism and classical liberalism. He was a HUGE proponent of robust and open-debate and he absolutely despised unpopular viewpoints being censored and shouted down. He craved opposition viewpoint. He was also a bit Libertarian as it pertains to personal freedoms and although for quite some time he favored a somewhat heavy-handed mix of government intervention into the economy he was aghast at 'cancel culture' and identity politics. Things like shouting down conservative speakers and getting speaking events cancelled, equating Senator Tom Cotton with Alex Jones, baselessly branding people as racist - homophobic, etc...all of these discussion tactics have drastically amped up over the past few years and it's been predominantly coming from the left side of the political/social aisle - that's how he saw it. So, while he did move away from some of his prior positions with the collapse of Venezuela he stayed true to form on a slew of other issues and those that viewed his as a team member actually moved away from him, not the other way around.

He was an interesting guy and I have nothing but fond memories. I regret not having an opportunity to get to know him better on a personal level but I can't do anything about that now, except for possibly holding a seance.

Rest in piece, my friend. You added a lot to this place and you will be missed.

He and I were supposed to microdose psilocybin if either of us were able to get a hold of some. I would have preferred an all out trip with him, but he was serious about considering microdosing for his ailments (or maybe just for fun?).

Also, he led me to Dr. Bartlett's talk on global over-population and simple arithmetic. Glad to see Dr. Bartlett's predictions have yet to pass, but NULLI was very convincing in bringing me into his understanding and perspective. He and I also grieved Dr. Bartlett's death a while back. I told NULLI that Dr. Bartlett had responded to an email I sent him a few months prior, but didn't follow up after further correspondence. NULLI informed me that he had passed, after which he and I had a great discussion.

I hold him and ZAT in a special place in my DR heart. Really, really good people. And I feel fortunate to have met each of them, even anonymously, through the DR. So thank you, Rogers, for providing the space and platform for that opportunity.

That's interesting. Over the years I feel like I became a bit confused. My earlier memories of Nulli was him defending socialists principles by addressing the disagreements between Marx and Proudhon. Basically favoring Proudhon as having a more representative viewpoint on socialism.

As time went by, it seemed like Nulli's character changed, and he became more of a conservative. To the point where I began to wonder if it had been Nulli making those points to start with. Probably would have been back between 2006-2009 some time.

They say you can't judge a book by its cover and as anonymous posters on DR, the cover is pretty much all anyone can see.

Clearly in the 4 years I've popped in and out of the DR, the contents of the book that was Nulli have eluded me. The descriptions of his politics that I read on this thread from those who knew him longer and better than I, do not match the view I developed from reading his posts. As a self-identified moderate liberal, I rarely agreed with his position on anything yet it seems we should have had more overlap.

To his family if you should read these comments, you have my condolences. Whether or not we agreed on anything is irrelevant at this time - you have lost a complex and interesting human being and I wish you well moving forward in life.

Wow. Thanks et_al for the post. Even though I've been around for at least 16 years, I really don't know very much about most of the posters I've encountered through the years. There are some amazing people who inhabit Roger's playground and I feel honored to have crossed swords and shared thoughts with so many still here and those now gone.

Looking at his photo, I swear that I've seen that face before but that's probably just my wishing. What a remarkable man with a remarkable career. I stand in awe of so many of you posters when you speak passionately about topics and subjects I can't begin to understand on any realistic level. Deep down I realize that many of you have impacted my life by your works in ways I'll never know.

I've said this before over the years, but it needs to be said again - at times like this.

Though we may not agree, there's something very important and wonderful that all of us share - we care.

In our own ways we wish to make our world a better place in some way that matters. And we use this forum to express thoughts and ideas - and sometime insults. We've formed a community of our own while sharing it with whomever wants to stop by and join us.

Nullifidian was one of those I always admired from the early years on and now I have a better understanding why. I will always cherish my time here and I hope everyone else allows themselves to do the same.

Oh crap. I hadn't refreshed and thought that et_al's post was Nulli. No wonder I remember the face, it was Zat.

Two Drudge Giants. Thanks for the moments.

Pretty incredible life. But did I miss Nulli's obituary?

I don't really care who a person is or whether I agreed with them or not. Obituaries rarely fail to provide something we all can't connect to.

#164 No. There has not been a decision to share it here yet.

Hey Snoof, I did some reading and I think you may be right that he began to move to the rw side.

#167 | Posted by BruceBanner at 2020-06-10 07:36 PM | Reply

Began?

He was about where Boaz is, politically.

Get outta here with that Centrist nonsense.

Zat's been dead five years? Whoa.

I'm one of the old-timers here myself, even though I don't post as often as some of the others (MY GOD GET A LIFE - OK JUST KIDDING), and anyway, I would rather someone leave because they know they've been exposed as a fraud than because they muthafuggin DIED.

Oh by the way, anybody heard from AFKABL2?

So you're saying that your group is a self-governed democracy Boaz?

Kinda ironic, isn't it? ;^)

The site isnt mine. I didnt create it. But I contribute and admin there because I've done some programming within discord.

Plus, the people who hang out there are great. We have awesome conversations. Nothing like here.

BTW, there are liberals and conservatives there. Some liberals from this site have reached out to us and they spend their time there.

#180 | Posted by boaz at 2020-06-10 08:27 PM | Reply

I wasn't making light of the site Boaz, just a pun about your fervent protestations that the US is a republic and not a democracy and the irony in how you always cite that the Founders didn't trust the populace enough to allow a direct democratic voting process for the US presidency. I realize your group's voting is in no way analogous to the presidential elections but found your touting of it as a democracy amusing.

I wish all of you nothing but the best.

Well it was a more lively time, when the President was only being second-guessed for killing flies, and not for killing (checks today's number) 115,130 Americans.

Make Drudge Retort Great Again!

Remember the old days? There was so much winning*, some people couldn't stand it!
So RCade had to create the plonk feature to let you goons stay in your Safety Bubbles.

That is their problem, do me a big favor. Never invite me there, don't worry, I wouldn't come there anyway. If you want to have a discussion about anything, you know where I am. If you don't, oh well, I'll be fine.
