The Black Lives Matter protests have seen controversial statues torn down in the US and Europe in recent weeks. But Germany, with its Nazi and communist past, has already dealt with many of its troubling monuments to unpleasant historical figures by placing them in museums. Then on Saturday a new divisive new statue of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin was peacefully unveiled.

Revolutionaries are remembered if they are successful. But the rub happens when you look at what what their revolution wrought. In Lenin's case it was a monstrous government that murdered more than 20 million of their own citizens. Stalin did not start the Gulags, Lenin did. Forced collectivization of private farms was not Stalin's idea, it was Lenin's. He was no hero. This is about as wise as the Russians erecting a statue of Hitler. Hitler killed far fewer Russians than the Communist Party.

#2 | Posted by docnjo, The revision of Communist leaders in Europe reminds me a lot of the revision of Southern leaders in the civil war, like Nathan Bedford Forest, who slaughtered hundreds of surrendering troops at Fort Pillow, became the first national leader of the Klu Klux Klan and made his fortune as a slave broker. The state of Tennessee erected a statue to him in 1972 at their state capital. I believe the reason they haven't buried Lenin is to prove he is still dead.

Lenin ordered more people killed in his first week in office than the Czarists had killed in the previous 100 years.

I don't personally have a problem with communist monuments-many are well done and well intentioned. But the Soviet Socialists were definitely a plague on the planet.

"Lenin ordered more people killed"

Is this like when K-Pop Stans ordered 1,000,000 tickets to a Trump rally?

Or did they actually get killed too?

"than the Czarists had killed in the previous 100 years."

Maybe that's why their state failed...

Wait there erecting new statues honoring Vladimir Lenin?

His victims are still young enough to be having children.
