Something shifted this month. Donald Trump's hold on history loosened, and may be breaking.

This tired Peggy noonan vaudeville act aside

Things around here have apparently changed

It appears I missed an organized hissy fit by the perpetually dishonest sand pounders

Teehee. Can't say I'm surprised given their penchant for acting like queens

Poor little rightoecentre

Now forced to peddle his wsj opinions via the other persona

And only took an uprising, American cities burning, a global pandemic and 200,000 dead Americans.

That Gawd sure works in mysterious ways.

Not anywhere as strange as the American public.

It's called a culture shifting event. Sadly the rain falls on the just and unjust alike.

At some point even the under-educated white male Base gets bored and starts watching NASCAR.

Peggy Noonan: Tulsa showed "not the empty seats so much as the empty faces-the bored looks, the yawning& phone checking, as if everyone was re-enacting something, hearing some old song & trying to remember how it felt a few yrs ago, when you [first] heard it"

Nailed it.

Many of his ardent supporters surely know inside themselves Trump doesn't care about them except for their votes, and is letting them down. But they're not yet ready to show it outwardly, still caught up in the cult-like Amway vibe that is being a Trump supporter.

His pandemic response is proof positive he couldn't care less abou them.

As his supporters friends and family are affected, their disaffection will move outward, and some won't be afraid to voice skepticism out loud.

The more Trump is beaten up politically now and through election day the less trouble we'll have from him after.

Well.... on the upside... not only do Americans get to pay for a wall... they also get a new ditch to dig out of.

It really sucks that is the upside of all this.

I don't know. Trump's star has certainly tarnished of late even with ardent supporters but that doesn't mean they are ready to vote Biden. At this point the best chance for Trump losing IMHO is that his erstwhile supporters just stay home on Nov. 3, because if they come out they are still voting Republican.

@#11 ... At this point the best chance for Trump losing IMHO is that his erstwhile supporters just stay home on Nov. 3, because if they come out they are still voting Republican. ...

That is why Pres Trump has been appealing to his base so much over the past few weeks. He knows he has to keep them angry enough that they will get out and vote in November. He's figuring he can win the Electoral College with a 40% approval rating if he can keep his base angry and energized.

What Pres Trump wasn't counting on was BLM energizing the Democrats to a voting-enthusiasm level that is on a par with Pres Trump's base.

You really need to email Righto and let him know he is in your heart.
----

But I digress, this to me is where Noonan gets to the heart of the matter:

"His long-term political malpractice has been his failure"with a rising economy, no unemployment and no hot wars"to build his support beyond roughly 40% of the country. He failed because he obsesses on his base and thinks it has to be fed and greased with the entertainments that alienate everyone else. But his base, which always understood he was a showman, wanted steadiness and seriousness in these crises, because they have a sense of the implications of things.

He doesn't understand his own base. I've never seen that in national politics.

Some of them, maybe half, are amused by his nonsense decisions and statements"let's ban all Muslims; let's end this deadbeat alliance; we have the biggest, best tests. But they are half of 40%, and they would stick with him no matter what. He doesn't have to entertain them! He had to impress and create a bond with others.

The other half of his base is mortified by his antics and shallowness. I hear from them often. They used to say yes, he's rough and uncouth and unpolished, but only a rough man can defeat the swamp. Now they say I hate him and what he represents but I'll vote for him because of the courts, etc. How a lot of Trump supporters feel about the president has changed."

"...but only a rough man can defeat the swamp."

And the suckers fell for that con.

"Now they say I hate him and what he represents but I'll vote for him because of the courts, etc."

To his credit, Boaz has been saying that from the beginning.

At least he's honest about wanting to strip people of their rights.

40% won't win him this election; the energy of the Democratic electorate, which was overwhelming in 2018 has only gotten more intense with Coronavirus, George Floyd, and the Trump Recession. Dems and independents will turn out in massive numbers, as they proved a few weeks ago in GA, when they were willing to take their lives in their hands and wait on line for hours to cast their ballot, and Dotard wasn't even up for election. Nobody has ever won what is essentially a two-person race with 40% of the vote even with the anti-democratic EC. Combover Quisling is going to the racist bag of tricks early, which will increase the intensity of black and brown voters and alienate any moderates who were planning to vote for him because they trust him more on the economy. He's down to the high 30s in more and more polls, what's is it going to be in November with 250k COVID deaths and thousands being evicted for none payment of rent?

Who, in their right mind, cares about what Peggy Noonan has to say about anything. The single most irrelevant human being on Earth. Wrong about everything, every single day of her priveleged life.
