Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was secretly offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans, a full year earlier than has been previously reported, according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence.

The assessment was included in at least one of President Donald Trump's written daily intelligence briefings at the time, according to the officials.

Sadly, I have to admit that, because of the highlighted section above, I have to believe Trump when he says he didn't know.

We all know he's probably functionally illiterate and lacks the attention span anyway to read something like an intelligence report.

Then-national security adviser John Bolton also told colleagues he briefed Trump on the intelligence assessment in March 2019.

Trump knew. Whether he considered the information as significant and can now remember of the message as it was delivered is inconsequential. Or at least, it should be.

I asked President Putin and he denied it.

I don't know why he would lie.

You have to understand that day he was prepping for a very important meeting with Diamond and Silk.

Not one republican senator will do anything.
Trump's got a them all in thrall.
They will make excuses and call it a Dem hoax.

Gal, they look away and cackle about the next rightwing nutjob they gift with a lifetime Federal Judge appointment.

They will not care enough about the dead troops to criticize, let alone sanction their Cheeto Jeebus.

Thrall in the sense of being a slave? Yes.

Always celebrate heroism when you see it. There are too many cowards in the world.

@#6 ... What say you GOP members of Congress?: ...

Based upon what some Congressional reporters are reporting lately, it seems that many GOP Congresspeople have taken to all but running away when they see a reporter.

There used to be a time when a reporter's microphone in the halls of Congress was like a steaming pasture pastry to flies.

Now it seems to be like DEET to mosquitoes.

Hoyer: Intel briefing showed Russia bounty allegations are not a "hoax"
www.axios.com

...House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Tuesday at a press conference that, after receiving a White House briefing, he sees no indication that the intelligence surrounding allegations that Russian operatives paid bounties to Taliban-linked militants to kill U.S. troops is a "hoax" " as President Trump has suggested.

What he's saying: "The president called this a hoax publicly. Nothing in the briefing that we have just received led me to believe it is a hoax. There may be different judgments as to the level of credibility, but there was no assertion that the information we had was a hoax."...

Trump Stirs New Alarm Over Russia by Dismissing Bounty Claims
www.bloomberg.com

...President Donald Trump has publicly shrugged off allegations that Russia offered bounties to kill American troops in Afghanistan, reigniting concerns that he's more interested in preserving ties with the Kremlin than defending U.S. interests.

Trump has yet to demand an investigation or threaten Russia with any consequences if the allegations are confirmed -- even as lawmakers from both parties demanded the administration hold Russia accountable if there is evidence that the bounty offers occurred....

Republicans as well as Democrats demanded the administration provide additional details. GOP lawmakers went to the White House for briefings on Monday while House Democrats received a separate briefing Tuesday....

On Monday night, the director of national intelligence, John Ratcliffe, vowed to investigate the allegations and brief lawmakers and the president about his conclusions.

But Ratliffe, a former Republican congressman who was confirmed in May, devoted much of his statement to a rebuke of the person or persons behind the allegations....

Our once great country is seriously wounded and all Trump does is open and fester our wounds, further. What better friend could our enemies have?

@#14 ... Our once great country is seriously wounded and all Trump does is open and fester our wounds, further. What better friend could our enemies have? ...

I am reminded of what Gen Mattis once said...

www.theatlantic.com

..."Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people -- does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us," [Gen Mattis] writes.

"We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.

We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children."

[Gen Mattis] goes on to contrast the American ethos of unity with Nazi ideology. "Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that The Nazi slogan for destroying us ... was "Divide and Conquer." Our American answer is "In Union there is Strength."'

We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis -- confident that we are better than our politics."...

Then it 'escaped his mind' like all
other things not specifically related
to Trump or Trump's own personal or
financial well being.

Utter failure as a leader...

Trump was briefed.
Putin ordered him to ignore the briefing.
American soldiers died and Taliban soldiers got the bounties.
Trump said "yes sir" to Putin who owns him.
If you haven't figured that out yet you are naive or stupid.

So it's ok by you that the CIC is criminally negligent.

Got it.

They also kill for cash.

Sorry to disappoint. We don't give up like trumpets do.

Prepare for the truth to trickle out again. And

Humpy is criminally negligent.

Again.

"Afghan officials reportedly corroborated the intelligence, saying Afghanistan has arrested 13 suspected middlemen between the GRU and Taliban-linked militants in the past six months and seized $500,000 in cash from one of their homes. "

Let the investigations begin.

We must find the Oranges!

I like how it's no longer both parties are the same.

Now it's one party is better... but it isn't much better.

Sounds like something Eberly and every other Republican might flag newsworthy.

So much winning.

I'm repeating myself...

OK - if the bounty killings are true, and I wouldn't be surprised if they are. It sucks but you all are lacking perspective. Do a little research into what the US has been doing for the last 50 years and get back to me. We're not the good guys. There are no good guys. There's only bad and worse, a continually shifting playing field. Major powers always end up being the aerghulse. Ask the families in Iraq, Syria, etc... how they feel. I'm sorry your dumb asd kid got killed in a war zone your country created. Get over it. They weren't the good guys.

This has less to do with the Taliban than it does with Trump and Russia. The point being that Russia is doing this while also begging Trump, who is following right along, to advocate for Russia to be let back into the G7.

Again, Trump is going right along with it. So, should this all be true, especially the part that Trump has known about it for months if not a year while simultaneously advocating for Russia's re-admittance, there's a credible argument to suggest Trump is aiding and abetting our enemies.

That's a problem. One in which voters should be aware of in an election year.
