Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The European Union will open its borders to visitors from 15 countries as of Wednesday, but not to travelers from the United States, Brazil or Russia, putting into effect a complex policy that has sought to balance health concerns with politics, diplomacy and the desperate need for tourism revenue.

The list of nations that European Union countries have approved includes Australia, Canada and New Zealand, while travelers from China will be permitted if China reciprocates.

The plan was drawn up based on health criteria, and European Union officials went to great lengths to appear apolitical in their choices, but the decision to leave the United States off the list - lumping travelers from there in with those from Brazil and Russia - was a high-profile rebuke of the Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus crisis.

Well, Trump has officially turned the United States into a "blank-hole country" as it regards our federally-led response to coronavirus. Sorry Americans who planned on traveling to Europe this summer - no can do while the virus rages unchecked throughout much of the country making U.S. citizenship toxic in places with wiser and competent leadership that tackled the virus' spread unlike our's in Washington.

The most powerful and greatest country on the planet now sits as a pariah - at least temporarily. Heck of a job Trumpy, heck of a job....

What an embarassment. American tourists and travelers used to be the gold standard. Trump has made us the unwanted scum. And of course his stupid supporters cheer this on.

"...maybe now we can bar other countries from coming here. That would be nice."

American History on line #1 to disagree.

Won't it be ironic when Mexico builds a wall to keep Americans out.

Probably not. My nephew and his gf were planning a September trip to Iceland, which I am told is now in doubt.

If you're already here you can do whatever you want. Going to Amsterdammit on Tuesday. Crete in a few weeks.

Crete is wonderful. If you have the time, take the hike through the central Canyon. It is the largest canyon in all Europe and it is mind blowingly beautiful. They also have it set up that you can start from the very top, do the five hour hike to the far bottom, and then take a shuttle back to the parking lot at the very top. It is a LONG hike but it is all down hill. Most people just do the whole Knossos tourist thing and that's it. If you have time to beach lounge, go to the far side of the island. It is more beautiful and there also a lot less people. And, if you have a few more extra hours, take a short ferry ride and check out the former leper colony on the small island off the far coast.
