Alabama college students are throwing 'COVID parties' where they invite infected people and gamble on who gets sick first, officials say. "They put money in a pot and they try to get COVID. Whoever gets COVID first gets the pot."

OMG, near coffee-spit take aside, I live with an Alabaman and they aboslutely do not take Covid seriously since day one. We come from different worlds, they have been raised to never change, so I doubt even a death or two will alter their trajectory. Not to hate on Alabama, but DAMNED they give meth capital Missouri a run for it's money from the stupids. Thanks for the serious laugh.

Sounds about the same as the 'Bareback' parties that gays had before any treatments for HIV were available.

Link claiming stories about frat Alabama covid parties is not true.

But we're also reading in the media spiking from protests isn't a problem while all other groups of people are spiking.

How much of "news" is accurate?

#12 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2020-07-03 07:34 AM | Reply

#12 - Bill. Seriously, do you now know even though it's been all over the DR for the past week? How many times has it been explained on here why that's the case and why it spreads? How "other groups" and the protests aren't even close to being equivalent?

#13 | Posted by YAV at 2020-07-03 08:05 AM | Reply

Bill, I see you posted on the "Did Floyd Protests lead to a surge" so you're dealing with a conflict in your own head about how the "other groups" that don't use masks, sit right next to each other, in indoor spaces with recycled air spread the virus but protesters that protested outdoors, wearing masks, keeping distant from each other don't.

So it looks like you don't need answering any of my questions, and the question you did ask is due to your need to reinforce "fake news" so you can do whatever you want.

Confirmation bias in full display.

Yav,

It was reported once a church choir had a high incident of spiking which makes sense. They are all singing.

Protesters are chanting...yelling and generally making all sorts so racket. And walking around into each others space.

It seems illogical to think this wouldn't lead to some sort of spreading.

#15 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2020-07-03 08:42 AM | Reply

Yav,

But I'm supposed to be believe a group of college students are having let's get infected parties?

It's not too hard to believe unfounded stories about Alabama students would be spread by the media and liberals.

Think about the likelihood of each happening.

Students deliberately infecting themselves....unlikely.

Liberals spreading lies about people from Alabama....likely.

#16 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2020-07-03 08:52 AM | Reply

Bill,
Did the church choir have masks on?
Was the church choir outside?
Did the church choir members remain in one spot for significant amount of time?
Did the church choir social distance?
Were the church choir members next to each other for an hour and a half to two hours?

The differences between the two is vast. They are not the same.

You're a moron.

I'll spell it out - not for you, because you will never understand, but because some other poor lost soul might be thinking like you.

The protests were outdoors. The virus does not spread as easily outdoors.

Protestors were, at a greater proportion than the general public, masked. Masks help prevent the spread of the virus.

Finally, studies - not "the media" - have shown that people who attended the protests contracted Covid at a lower rate than the public at large, and additionally, increased social distancing and stay-at-home behaviors in their areas because people were avoiding the protests.

Again, I don't expect you to understand this, and even if you do, you'll pretend not to.

#16 - BTW - I'd like to point out that this story which is from/aggregated by Microsoft News can't be found on the business insider website, and isn't listed in the author's list of articles she's written:

www.businessinsider.com

However the News is reporting what the council members are saying, not that it's true, and only that they are investigating it.

The ABC News cite appears to be accurate in reporting the drama in Alabama, though.

Also this statement of yours, Bill It's not too hard to believe unfounded stories about Alabama students would be spread by the media and liberals is irrational for the following reasons:
1) the News reported what a City Council member said.
2) the story isn't unfounded. See 1) above.
3) "liberal" has nothing to do with anything. "right-wing" does this constantly.
4) ABC isn't anywhere close to being "liberal"

Feel better now that you got that insult out?
Now can we move on to an actual acknowledgment of the facts?
Or do we let your insult and non-response stand as your implicit acknowledgment of the truth?

#29 | Posted by YAV at 2020-07-03 10:59 PM | Reply

Just read about a hospital that has been doing CV tests on everyone who enters the doorway. Whether visiting or coming in for a sprained ankle and are getting a lot of positives in asymptomatic patients, many of them young.
Than they do a CT scan on every positive test and are finding most of the patients have some lung damage.

The article wondered if there will be a whole lot of emphysema patients in 20 or 30 years.

#30 | Posted by prius04 at 2020-07-04 01:55 AM | Reply

I just read an article today that described the lungs of young, healthy, asymptomatic, positive COVID patients looking like the lungs of long term smokers.

It doesn't matter how symptomatic or not COVID is, it's going to do some long term damage if you get it. Kidneys, lungs, heart, blood clots, damaged immune system ... It isn't the flu.

You pointed out the first thing I thought when reading this article. It is a city council member (probably a boomer) claiming that the "kids" are doing something outrageous. Pretty much boomer modus operandi and almost never true. Boomers lie and fall for lies. That is why they elected Trump.

Just like the whole "boomer remover" thing. The article I saw first traced it back to a boomer claiming on twitter that he heard some millennials saying it at a grocery store. But there is not any record of a millennial actually saying it online until after the boomers got all outraged over it.

I guess it is possible the boomer was telling the truth, but sounds to me like yet another example of a boomer snowflake trying to instigate outrage and generational strife.

It's really a bad virus.

Just at a well visit. In the doctor's office, no problems.

Any one sick? Stay in your car. They can't go in. Doctors in full garb come out to check patients.

This is getting weird.

Is it as bad in the hinterlands of MO as the TV show "Ozark" makes it out to be?
