Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday ordered that face coverings must be worn in public across most of the state, a dramatic ramp up of the Republican's efforts to control spiking numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases and hospitalizations.

LOL this idiot ends up "infringing on people's liberties" anyway.

Wonder if he'll be man enough to admit his mistake in walking into this completely predictable outcome.

Gov. Greg Abbott expresses regret over reopening Texas bars during coronavirus

Texas still has that idiot Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.

Glad that Abbott is making these changes, but I don't know if it's from actual care and understanding, or reading the change in politics that has caused him to reverse direction.

He still won't let major municipalities to issue "Safe at Home" orders, though.

Thanks.

The lesson should be more than opening the bars, though.

It should be "I'm sorry I didn't listen to people who know what they're talking about".

Abbott has blood on his hands. It's punishment that he's now made a decision that was politically too late for half of Texans and politically anathema to the other half.

This is what you get for being a windsock, Governor. You won't hurt nearly enough to make up for the people you've helped kill.

But Texas Lt. Governor Dan Patrick sees this as his big chance to ingratiate himself with Trump, whom he assumes will be reelected in November and therefore will be there to help when he challenges Abbott for the governor's seat in 2022. Trump has never really cared for Abbott all that much. Sure, he's a Republican from an ostensibly RED state, but he's also a 'cripple' and therefore a loser, and Trump won't allow himself to be seen supporting losers (despite the fact that Abbott collects $14,000/month as result of the settlement from the accident that caused him to be confined to a wheelchair). Besides, Abbot's a devout Catholic who's married to a Mexican-American woman.

Now Dan Patrick, he's more Trump's type. Twice married, a born-again Evangelical Christian. His real name is not even Patrick but rather Goeb, but he had it legally changed because, while his parents were not religious in any real way, he didn't like the sigma of going through life with a name that people would perhaps assume was Jewish.

Was Lt Gov Patrick the one who wanted to sacrifice the elderly so that the state could be opened again?

Trump and these Republicans got their base all riled up and suddenly they're on the other side of this stupid and unnecessary culture war they've created. Now they have to deal with their supporters being both angry and dying. This outcome was obvious to any sane person. It'd be pretty funny if not for all the dead and the many more deaths to come.

Bah!!!

Masks are for the Living.

Patriotic flag waving Texans know there's more important thangs than Living (in Texas).

"There are more important things than living." Yes, Texas Lt. Gov Dan Patrick actually said that. Those actual words actually came out of his mouth.

Come on you old people. Get with the Death Cult Progromme.

Do your dooty!

Texas GOP moves ahead with in-person Houston convention despite COVID-19 spike
www.houstonchronicle.com

...The Texas Republican Party's executive committee voted overwhelmingly Thursday to hold its state convention in downtown Houston later this month, despite a push among some party officials to move the event online amid a local spike in COVID-19 cases.

In a virtual meeting, the committee voted 40 to 20 to move ahead with the in-person event, scheduled to take place July 16 to 18 at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Several thousand people are expected to attend, and they will be required to wear masks for most of the event under Gov. Greg Abbott's latest order requiring nearly all Texans to wear face coverings in public, Texas GOP Chair James Dickey said.

In a statement after the vote, the party said other safety precautions will be available, including thermal scanners at entryways, "deep" cleanings between meetings, and expanded seating to accommodate social distancing. Sponsors have donated masks to ensure they are readily available for complying with Abbott's order.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who has said he thinks the event should be virtual but rejected calls to cancel it himself over concerns about politicizing the situation, struck a more aggressive tone Friday, saying he hopes the GOP will reconsider its decision amid rising COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations....

Not even enforce it selectively, on non-whites only?

What is this country coming to!?
