Family barbecues and red-white-and blue Popsicles are signature parts of a festive Fourth of July. But what will this celebration look like without the live fireworks displays?

And here in SW Va., although parades and other festivities have been cancelled, fireworks displays are still going to happen.

I'll be staying home trying to keep the dogs from freaking out.

Gotta be real, not much to be happy about. But if I were in the top one percentile of wealth bracket, I might be happy about the temporarily-inflated stock market.

The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn..."

Thanks Yav. brilliant post. The idea of celebrating the beginning of a nation that allowed slavery is sort of ridiculous. This nation has operated on various concepts of equality while actually operating on various racist policies for over 200 years. I find it hard to celebrate it. I love my country, but as I love my children, I do not pretend they are perfect.

#16 | Posted by danni at 2020-07-04 10:43 AM | Reply

I can't imagine anybody thinking this country is perfect.

We celebrate our independence, not our perfection.

I'm thankful my ancestors chose to come here in the late 1800s.

I'm in a great place now. Health, peace and prosperity.

Do I want more to enjoy this like me and my family? Absolutely. And I'm willing to work for that.

Happy 4th of July, everyone. I'm grateful to live in this nation and for the friends and family I have to share it with. Gratefulness is a choice, not to ignore or minimize the problems we have, but to also give time to the blessings we have despite those problems. So may your serially sandy bits be a little less itchy and raw today, and may your brown balloon knots feel the pure rays of positivity I am sending everyone. Be well.

American Pride Hits New Low; Few Proud of Political System news.gallup.com

American patriotism is at its lowest ebb for almost two decades, a new poll has found.
A survey by Gallup found that while 70 per cent of US adults said they are "proud" to be American, less than half said that they are "extremely proud".

45% are "extremely" proud, the second straight year of sub-50% readings
22% of Democrats are extremely proud, down 10 points in one year
Americans most proud of U.S. scientific success, military; least proud of politics
