Newly released body camera footage shows Florida police officers laughing and celebrating after shooting rubber bullets at a protest last month in which a Black woman was shot in the face and seriously injured. LaToya Ratlieff was hit in the face with a rubber bullet during what had been a largely peaceful demonstration less than a week after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody. The 34-year-old said she suffered a fractured skull and required 20 stitches. She couldn't eat for a week and still has trouble seeing out of one blood-filled eye. During another section of the new video released Wednesday, Baro incorrectly tells another officer that his camera is not recording and the two officers begin laughing and joking about the people they had shot with rubber bullets

... Baro incorrectly tells another officer that his camera is not recording ...

Did the officer try to turn it off, but didn't?

... the two officers begin laughing and joking about the people they had shot with rubber bullets ...

This is wrong, so very wrong, on so many levels.

I had thought that only sadists enjoy hurting people like that.

Who says they aren't sadists?

I have talked about knowing officers here before. Good ones I count among my friends - and the rest. The rest laugh about effing people up all the time. Frankly they are the kind of people I really don't like to be around and never have. They do or say something you don't like? They hit their head getting into the back seat or they run into something and fall down while cuffed. It's about a 1:1 ratio in my experience. The problem is that code of silence that even the good ones usually don't cross...

On the flip side, an example of what happens when you treat people with respect... A friend talked about running down an armed suspect from a shooting with another officer a while back. The guy ran into a dead end. They knew each other from previous interactions. He put the gun down and surrendered. He told the other officer (paraphrasing) "You're lucky you're with him. He's a good cop. He's always treated me with respect." When he talked about it, it was clear this wasn't the only time something like this happened but the most dangerous he talks about. The whole conversation was around policing and the need to have community policing and how to treat people. As a matter of fact the first time we talked about it I think was during the original BLM protests.

I used to work with a bunch of police. They often laughed about the throw down weapons they carried and how they planted drugs on black people.
