Paul Krugman: The irony is that Trump's willingness to trade deaths for jobs and political gain has backfired. In any case, the point is that America's defeat at the hands of the coronavirus didn't happen because victory was impossible. Nor was it because we as a nation were incapable of responding. No, we lost because Trump and those around him decided that it was in their political interests to let the virus run wild.

Trump, enabled by republicans and emboldened by "conservatives", totally screwed America big time

There has been a fair bit of commentary to the effect that our failed pandemic response was deeply rooted in American culture. We are, the argument goes, too libertarian, too distrustful of government, too unwilling to accept even slight inconveniences to protect others.

There definitely isn't any other advanced country where demonstrators against public health measures would wave guns around and invade state capitols. And the Republican Party is more or less unique among major Western political parties in its hostility to science in general.

But what strikes me, when looking at America's extraordinary pandemic failure, is how top-down it all was.

The most ironic truth that dominates Trump's incredulous response to the coronavirus pandemic is that if he really was intelligent he would have figured out that if he took the lead and effectively dealt with covid as a problem that threatened and connected all Americans as one, he may have secured his re-election in a real landslide. He could have pulled all Americans together to fight the virus as a singular army facing an enemy on the battlefield of public health - making our response a united one, each American fighting for and protecting each other.

But instead Trump chose the opposite. He pitted very concerned Americans against many others by claiming the ones concerned with public safety were instead trying to diminish or "take" constitutional rights away from those others simply by advocating safety practices and mandating precautions to minimize the spread of the virus.

All of this is so unnecessary and so non-political at its core. Yet here we are.

One of the many problems with rwingers is that they presume that "liberal" is more synonymous with "libertine" than with "liberty".

Of course they are. Did you hear them at his rallies? What got them on their feet cheering?

282 new cases in Canada today.
Corrected for population to compare to the U.S. Canada would have had 2,453 new cases today.
Instead the U.S. under Trump's leadership came in around 50,000.

In other words, we're doing 20 times worse than Canada in handling this. Canada's not alone. As the rest of the world opens up, we'll be fighting this pandemic with people in hospital, businesses perishing, people continuing to die at rates far higher than ever needed to be. Our doctors and nurses will be pushed beyond what they should ever have to deal with. And this country will be scarred for decades because of Trump.

Brilliant piece by Krugman. Eberly should read it. More evidence of Krugman's contention we lost because Trump and those around him decided that it was in their political interests to let the virus run wild can be found in the WSJ:

Some European nations are closing in on a milestone that to the U.S. seems distant: virtually stopping the new coronavirus from spreading within their territories.

Echoing the achievement of Asia-Pacific countries such as New Zealand, Vietnam and Taiwan, a handful of places in Europe are reporting only a smattering of new daily infections. Their success in containing the pandemic has allowed them to reopen their economies earlier, at a faster clip and with greater confidence than the stop-start efforts of U.S. states...

Who would've thought electing a self centered ginormous ego driven low iq criminal spoiled frat boy would end poorly for America?

Everyone with 1/2 a functioning brain cell. That's who.

When Trump banked on the strategy of division instead of unity he lost the Pandemic, 130,000 lives and most like the 2020 election.

We lose a lot of wars. Wars are really expensive. We really should reconsider our options for diplomacy.

Anti-Science and Anti-Vaccination Nut Jobs,
that and greedy youth that "just have to have

America is hopeless. Had this been a SERIOUS
Pandemic, like MERS, or a new Spanish Flu,
there would be body bags lining the streets...

It's not over until it's over.

New York had the bodies stacked in refrigerated semi's.

This could happen in Texas.

How America Lost the War on Covid-19

SHORT VERSION:
Fox news poisoned the minds of the country to the point that half of the country became stupid and confused enough to elect an incompetent sociopathic malignant narcissist con man.

That'd be convenient. DrudgeReport has an 8x bigger direct reach than FoxNews. FoxNews is barely double InfoWars of all places. People give cable news disproportionately high credit.

When you look at average viewership instead of peak, Fox News is less popular than a Wrestlemania PPV. More people want John Cena than Sean Hannity.

Why downplay the threat, whitey?

Wrestlemania isn't on 24x7.

Playing up the threat of a single partisan channel in a dying medium with a reach less than a 10th of a popular youtuber, on par with a dying entertainment niche, is a bit fragile and overblown. Cracker.

"single partisan channel in a dying medium"

Oh come on.

There are other channels, and other media, delivering the same ideological content.

You're pretending there is no forest, just one tree.

Why are you downplaying their messaging?

The most obvious explanation is you are in agreement with their messaging.

It doesn't matter the viewership. Fox sets the agenda. Determines the alternate reality. Makes lies seem real for half the country. And trump beleives whatever lie they tell him and sets national policy based on that misinformation.

Even if fox news only had ONE viewer, if that viewer is the president then fox has massive power and uses it in ways that harms the country and the world.

America is in an absolute decline and even possible extinction thanks to the right wing mental midgets. Because of them we haven't won a war the last 75 years and now we're even losing a war to a VIRUS. Conservative Christian values I'm guessing.

Given that I keep being told what appears on the channel by self identifying Democrats, it seems that makes up most of their viewership. Why can't you just turn them off?

Trump declared himself a "wartime president."
Then he took a look at the battlefield.
And ran away.
Man, those bone spurs are rough.

Lost assumes that we fought it.

Trump surrendered with barely any attempt to win.
