Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, July 09, 2020

Health-care workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic are encountering shortages of masks, gowns, face shields and gloves -- a frustrating recurrence of a struggle that haunted the first months of the crisis.

So, here's the question: why was the United States so unprepared for a Pandemic, not even having enough PPE? Answer: for profit healthcare system that puts profits before preparedness. In manufacturing it is called "just in time" so that you have the components needed to manufacture a product without having those components sitting on a shelf long before needed. That's fine if you are building a car or any other product, It's not fine if you are running a healthcare system because you can't actually predict things like Pandemics. In healthcare we need to be prepared for a Pandemic all the time, and yes that means stocking necessary things like masks, ventilators, etc. far above our actual normal needs and rotating our inventories of those items all the time. That costs money and reduces profits for hospitals. That's why hospitals and our healthcare system should not be based on profits. It should be a public service funded by our government just like our military is. It is quite obvious today that the defenses made by our military, though important, really don't protect us from things we can't even see like viruses. We need the same kind of protections we have from outside invaders for viruses which kill far more of us than any outside enemy ever has in the history of our nation.

""Have we had enough yet of the entitled brats that insist on bar hopping and beach going without a care in the world?"

Better question: have we had enough of politicians more concerned with kissing Trump's ass than protecting the public health; case in point Lap Dog Desantis. Young people have always been irresponsible and willing to expose themselves to dangerous situations, we have government to rein in that irresponsibility but when the motivation of our government is to get the President reelected instead of protecting the health of the people this is exactly what many of us have been warning you would be the results. Now it is reality and you are going to blame young irresponsible people instead of the politicians in charge? That is just plain stupid. Other nations have irresponsible young people too but what's different about them is they have responsible leaders, we just don't. The fish rots from the head, never forget that.

If that was true you'd be honest about the protesters wearing masks, distancing as much as possible, and not being a source for the increase in COVID-19 cases (as is being admitted by the Governors, finally). If that was the case you'd acknowledge that there is a huge difference between political rallies for the President's ego in indoor spaces, where they remove the signs put there to ensure social distancing. Or at the outdoor gathering (Mt. Rushmore) where they tied the chairs together so they couldn't let people move a chair to social distance, and discourage wearing masks.

You may have a good point to make from time to time, but you undercut your own arguments over and over.

Not at all.

Maybe your position is that large gatherings are OK if people wear masks. But either they are or they aren't, and it seems that many think that going out to protest is a valid reason to gather, while going to a party or concert is not OK.

I spent the last few days in Amsterdam. I went to two museums, a few stores, a bar, and two restaurants. No one was wearing masks. I was required to wear a mask on the train over, and on a ferry.

Personally, I don't mind wearing a mask. if it makes people feel better. I have a nice gaiter that was issued as part of my Afghanistan kit. I tried wearing a surgical mask, but over long periods of time it begins to cut into your ears. They would also be impractical for workers in offices without air conditioning. We don't wear masks while at work.

#3 | Posted by mutant

As already stated you are an idiot. MICHIGAN does not the whole country make. MICHIGAN while we are having an uptick has NOT had the same level of infections as the sunbelt or anywhere near - recently. We are not Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, etc. Not mention the Confederate Red states that are also surging.

I watch that list and the ICU bed inventory. Inventory in the past week has fallen dramatically but even before that there were hospitals in the list having a 0-6 day supply of key PPE, but you neglect to also mention that. Beaumont Hospital system being one of them and one of the biggest too. Do you think with a significant outbreak that 100 beds is significant inventory of ICU Beds? I don't like the fact we revised yesterday's count down 100 for out of staters that brought it here and were tested positive here and then removed from the Michigan list. My area only has about 20% ICU bed capacity open. Negative pressure rooms are also mostly occupied. Respirators are in relative short supply. Hospital stays from CV-19 can be MONTHS long. My area of Michigan is NOT ready for a surge.

As for your strawman about protests - mask wearing was rampant at them and I was honestly braced for the surge after them, but it didn't happen. Bars, parties and shoppers seem to be the main source. Depending where you go the lack of masks and social distancing is rampant. I seen how people were acting at my friend's bars (posted pictures) - youthful people seem to think they are immune and act as if nothing is going on. So do obese 30 - 50 something white men (and women) shopping in stores.

Interesting considering the Netherlands has very strict travel restrictions still in place
Americans are only allowed to transit the airport with a health certificate, most counties including Sweden, the U.K. and the USA are banned entirely from entering the country unless essential (with 2 week monitored quarantine)

Hotels are only partially open, large gatherings are prohibited and as a result danish businesses and schools are open to danish citizens, who followed the rules, didn't travel, and took good advice

"It's not an unaknowldged risk, nor are public health officials dampening their recommendations for safety during protests."

"To which Ashish Jha, dean of Brown University's School of Public Health, added: "Do I worry that mass protests will fuel more cases? Yes, I do. But a dam broke, and there's no stopping that."

Some public health scientists publicly waved off the conflicted feelings of their colleagues, saying the country now confronts a stark moral choice. The letter signed by more than 1,300 epidemiologists and health workers urged Americans to adopt a "consciously anti-racist" stance and framed the difference between the anti-lockdown demonstrators and the protesters in moral, ideological and racial terms.

Those who protested stay-at-home orders were "rooted in white nationalism and run contrary to respect for Black lives," the letter stated.

By contrast, it said, those protesting systemic racism "must be supported."

"As public health advocates," they stated, "we do not condemn these gatherings as risky for Covid-19 transmission. We support them as vital to the national public health."

I understand Trump's rally was indoors and was heavily advised not to happen. We can all agree on that.

But the shutdown protests.....every thing I saw about them was outside as well. Why pretend those were indoor gatherings?

a few days ago, someone here posted 1 picture of 1 guy inside yelling at people during the shutdown protests.

Is that your proof that the BLM protests and the shutdown protests were different?

Or you going to continue there has been some political hypocrisy on this issue?

Personally, I don't care.....we have so much GOP fueled hypocrisy there is no point in comparing it because the GOP is the world leader in hypocrisy, IMO.

The only place I was required to wear a mask was on a ferry. Nowhere else.

I stayed at the Hilton Doubletree at Centraal Station. No masks (for guests-employees still wore masks). Bars and restaurants were open. The only thing that was closed was the executive lounge (I'm a Hilton Diamond member), but they made up for it by comping you at the bars and restaurants, which was actually a better deal for me.

"Cloth face coverings are meant to prevent someone from transmitting the disease to others, and not to protect someone from becoming infected."

Hence, if your goal is to spread disease, don't wear one!

I hope you're aware you can further help spread disease by not washing your hands after you use the bathroom!

You should probably get a job in fast food, where not washing your hands after using the bathroom will have maximum effect.

I mean, it would be even more effective if you were a doctor who didn't wash his hands, but that will take years, and this pandemic is only going to last 18 months or more, so there isn't really time for your optimal disease spreading strategy.

So we all agree with the CDC on cloth masks! Just one protester with chinea19 flu that is not wearing a cloth mask may be placing anyone at risk if close even if the other close by contacts are wearing cloth masks.

But still some claim all protesters are wearing some sort mask 100 percent of the time and therefore the recent increase is not attributable to protesting closely. Laughable.

Let's do some contract tracing research. I'll be back with more FACTS! later.

now why did the CDC put the word "may" in their cloth mask advice?

#106 | Posted by mutant at 2020-07-10 08:17 PM | Reply

Mutant, you're waiting for an absolutist statement? It's all about probabilities. Not that you care what the CDC actually says - or you wouldn't have stopped reading once you found a word you thought you could hang your entire argument on. Let's read a little more, shall we?

"Cloth face coverings may help prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others. Wearing a cloth face covering will help protect people around you, including those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and workers who frequently come into close contact with other people (e.g., in stores and restaurants)."

As to your preferred mask: "The cloth face coverings recommended here are not surgical masks or respirators. Currently, those are critical supplies that should be reserved for healthcare workers and other first responders."

All this is about is working with probabilities, minimizing risk where we can, reducing the spread through distancing, face coverings, and not being indoors with other people in spaces like restaurants and nightclubs.

This isn't difficult to understand unless you just won't accept it.

We know all this from Japan, from South Korea, from almost every other country in the world. We also know what happens when you ignore the basics. You end up like Brazil or the United States.

Many cities opened testing sites for protesters because of the concern over COVID spread.

You know what they found? That positive COVID test rates at those test centers were on par with those of the general population.

So take you speculation and shove it because we have actual data after the fact that COVID spread was not as rampant as feared in those protests.

As for "may", you're a lay person. You think science is absolute. It's very rarely absolute.

If you would have read the article that I posted, you would have seen that perhaps the reason WHY the Kingdom of Jordon felt that it was appropriate to help Michigan had NOTHING to do with where any member of the Royal Family had gone to college.
