Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, July 11, 2020

WaPost Editorial Board: There are no doubt thousands of people in federal prison who deserved a presidential commutation more than Roger Stone. But after President Trump's intervention on Friday, Mr. Stone will serve none of his prison sentence. The president may have had the power to help his longtime friend. But that does not make it any less a perversion of justice -- indeed, it is one of the most nauseating instances of corrupt government favoritism the United States has ever seen.

There is no doubt about Mr. Stone's guilt. During the 2016 presidential campaign, he tried to play intermediary between WikiLeaks, which had become a front for the Kremlin, and the Trump campaign, which reaped the benefits of WikiLeaks's publication of stolen Democratic emails. A jury concluded that Mr. Stone obstructed Congress, lied to investigators and tampered with a witness in the investigations that followed the 2016 race " "covering up for the president," as the judge in his case noted.

The United States is supposed to be a place in which laws apply equally to all. And while it never has " and never will " live up to that ideal in full, no modern president before Mr. Trump has so clearly renounced it. The president seems to be doing his best, within the confines of the U.S. constitutional system, to emulate the gangster leadership of Russian President Vladimir Putin, a man whose ruinous reign Mr. Trump has always admired. If the country needed any more evidence, Friday confirmed that the greatest threat to the Republic is the president himself.

Another viewpoint:
House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA), whose committee Stone lied to, said Friday that of Trump's "countless acts that are both self-serving and destructive to our democracy," the Stone commutation was "among the most offensive to the rule of law and principles of justice."

"With this commutation, Trump makes clear that there are two systems of justice in America: one for his criminal friends, and one for everyone else," Schiff said in the statement responding to the commutation news.

American politics is an honor system. If you have no honor you can do what you want. It's like taking corn from a roadside stand and not putting money in the box.

... Trump makes clear that there are two systems of justice in America: one for his criminal friends, and one for everyone else ...

Yup.

Law and order President my ass.
7 felonies, convicted unanimously by a jury of his peers, but willing to cover for Trump so he must be a great American.

The only thing Trump makes clear is that he doesn't represent anybody but himself. Certainly not the America we know.

So, please, lets don't broad brush the whole justice system over what Trump does. He's just a temporary aberration ~~ like a nightmare that's cast a dark shadow over America. When he's gone that dark shadow will follow him.

Lets VOTE the bum out in November and be done with his kind.

#5 While i agree with what you said, we will never be rid of Trump or his type. If he loses in November he will never shut up, and will do everything in his power to delegitimize the next administration and undercut it in every way possible. Even when he's dead, someone else will take the mantle of guiding this sickening group if about 33% of Americans because the lust for power will be too great. God help us if that person is smarter than Trump (not a very high bar).

Pompeo is preparing to run for president in 2024. There's your mantel.

Win or lose, Trump's attention will be riveted on staying out of prison. SCOTUS has already ruled that a president is not above the law. Therefore, when NY State indicts his fat butt, he must respond. How he responds will be dependent on whether or not he is president or a private citizen. If a private citizen, his goose is cooked. If president, who knows what the next move will be.

What if Trump doesn't respond to NY?
What if, like all the supeanas that he ignored, just says make me?
Will NY send agents to DC to take him out?
I used to have some faith in our system, but Trump exposed the ridiculous power given to the president and now I'm not so sure.

@#7 ... Pompeo is preparing to run for president in 2024. There's your mantel....

At this point, based upon Pres Trump's behavior and actions (and the actions of his puppeteer), I am not 100% convinced that Pres Trump will not be running for President in 2024.

Back more on the side of reality, I'm trying to remain focused on 2020... ;)

Trump occupying the Oval Office PROVES that thugs can be President of the United States. Imagine that..... an asssclown mocking the highest office of the nation.

This the same week an Iraq vet and Purple Heart winner was forced into retirement for telling the truth - out of spite by Trump - rather than receive the promotion to bird colonel he deserved.

Meanwhile, Trump commutes Stone's sentence he was to serve for several counts of NOT telling the truth.

Just add it to the list of Unforgivable Betrayals this man has committed against his own country in order to stuff his own coffers.

Disgusting and Deplorable.

Unfortunately it will take time to clean out the corruption of Trumpism.

Unless we win in a tsunami it will be another partisan fight (like everything is now) to clean out the evil that has infested our government.

It may have been bad before he got there but it is way worse now.

McConnell has been a busy bee packing the courts. Though I see it hasn't worked as well as they hoped.

Still. It will take years if not decades to clean the stench of Trumpism from our government and from the whitey house(Maybe we should paint it black).

Republicans are playing Scorched Earth and we are playing Poor Me!

Time to kick it up a notch. Time to stop dying for Dear Leader and his Economy and time to Live. Time to kick some Trumpy rumpy!

DONNER

"Unfortunately it will take time to clean out the corruption of Trumpism."

That's the weak spot where the Republicans will hit President Biden the hardest in 2024.

The man put children in cages, nothing after that makes much of a difference to me. He's a racist piece of filth who does whatever he pleases, doesn't care about laws, ethics or anything else. And his supporters are just as bad as he is.

Yes, and voters have short memories. ~~ i.e. Trump after George Bush.

That's why Biden has to pick a highly electable V.P. for his first term. My concern is that Biden will be for one term and the GOP will pounce on the fact that he hasn't fixed all the problems in four years. (Like anybody could). I fear they have Pompeo waiting in the wings along with a fee other snakes in the grass willing to pick up where Trump left off.
