Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, July 15, 2020

Michael Hobbes, HuffPost: The American left, we are told, is imposing an Orwellian set of restrictions on which views can be expressed in public. Institutions at every level are supposedly gripped by fears of social media mobs and dire professional consequences if their members express so much as a single statement of wrongthink. This is false. Every statement of fact in the Harper's letter is either wildly exaggerated or plainly untrue.

The panic over "cancel culture" is, at its core, a reactionary backlash. Conservative elites, threatened by changing social norms and an accelerating generational handover, are attempting to amplify their feelings of aggrievement into a national crisis. The Harper's statement, like nearly everything else written on this subject, could have been more efficiently summarized in four words: "Get Off My Lawn."

According to the byline, J.K. Rowling, Noam Chomsky, and Margaret Atwood are now considered "Conservative elites;" 2020 is a heckuva year.

When I think of misapplications of the mob mentality online of calling people out to have them "cancelled," I think of Kevin Hart being forced to step away from hosting the Oscars for comments made almost a decade before.

But Jimmy Kimmel as Oscar host was perfectly fine?

#1 What's your point?

Is Kevin Hart struggling to get by, after being "cancelled?"

Thought I agree, comedy is comedy.

But.

Kevin Hart did a stand up joke, that amounted to physically abusing his son for finding out he's gay.

Jimmy Kimmel was an actor in a skit, I'm not sure the context. But I doubt it was about beating up someone.

Good point about the individuals creative control over their previous questionable content. Kevin Hart presumably writes his standup bits for himself (or at least has the final say over what makes it to the routine), versus doing a tv production.

Cancel Culture (i.e., boycott) is an arm of capitalism and the freedom of expression, two of the most American mechanisms ever, which is even more significant now, in the face of Citizens United, than ever.

If you've had privilege all of your life, equality for others must seem like encroachment.

When these types of arguments are presented and right wingers complain I just remind them of Clearchannel buying up all the radio stations in many markets, especially those where liberal talk show hosts such as Rachel Maddow, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann and many others all had shows that had good ratings but that Clear Channel didn't want presented. All those people are still around but today they have to broadcast online because the radio band waves are all owned by big corporations who don't want anything except piece of filth like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity on the air.

Also, that article was just one more example of a long winded writer using thousands of words to say something he should have been able to express in hundreds of words. Tedious writing like that bores me to tears.

What a pile of hooey! I've been a liberal all my life but I've never been a Communist nor even a sympathizer. However, the McCarthyites have drageed us into multiple wars for nothing, cost us trillions of dollars, robbed us blind while waving the flag and claiming they represent Jesus. Using the old "Communist/Marxist" baloney lost its power when Russia deserted Communism for Kleptocracy. Today those words don't have any power because, actually, they don't have any meaning. Even Red China isn't really red anymore.

Trump is the KING of Cancel Culture.

All his lawsuits and attacks on anyone who disagrees with him, trashes him, or he doesn't like beats anyone in the country.

The hypocrisy of conservatives.

They will defend to the death the right of corporations to legally bribe politicians with unlimited donations to their campaigns (which the current batch of conservatives have shown is easily funneled into the pockets of the politician and their families without any consequences). But, they are SHOCKED and OUTRAGED if I decide that I will just decide not to spend money with those corporations to fund their unethical and immoral behavior, or any other corporation that does not agree with my values.

Nick Cannon just had his run in with Cancel Culture for Black Hebrew Israelite ideology that's anti-semitic.

Another staple of Liberal ideology...there are no negatives to anything we do and if anyone says differently, write as much as you can about how they are wrong without actually answering the premise. And the premise is true without any doubt, free speech is being attacked. It's jut not being attacked from the government level, it's being attacked by social means by people who don't like when others say opinions that don't agree with Liberals. There is no amount of rhetoric that changes that fact. Whether it's good or bad, everyone has their opinion. But the fact still remains.

Put it this way, there were things slaves were punished for saying because their white masters didn't like it, regardless if it was true or not. That was wrong and is wrong. The same thing is happening today, Liberals are punishing those who say things that they don't like by social means. Sure, it's not at a government level. But that's where society has not kept up with technology. We need a government that contains the right support for what technology provides us today pertaining to social situations.

I just don't see it.
Lots of people lose gigs for saying stupid stuff all the time.

Is there a problem?
Do you also think there's a remedy, or is offering solutions someone else's responsibility?

Is Bill Cosby being treated unfairly too?

Nick Cannon made a choice.
Viacom did, too.
Fox is keeping him on Masked Singer, though.

Dixie chicks got cancelled for criticizing war.

Colin K got cancelled by Trump for kneeling to protest racist policing.

Cancel culture is free speech. Being against criticism is anti freedom.

The people that eventually became Americans started burning books as soon as they showed up in early 1600. They couldn't handle ideas that offended them. This hasn't changed in American, and whatever gets cancelled at the time is just the Overton window of the era. It's also a lot easier for people to get out messages that will get them in trouble than it has ever been before, which is hilarious.

There's one good example of black and white folks being canceled.
Nevertheless, recently, it seems like a majority of cancel culture has been affecting blacks, especially athletes.

"Cancel culture" is just a bunch of dinosaurs complaining that their ------ behavior was made visible by the world we live in today. Where before you could probably make proudly racist remarks at a restaurant and go home and sleep in your comfy bed without your boss finding out about it, today there's a good chance your boss will find out, but in either case your boss probably would have done something about it.

This isn't a "culture" shift. It's a visibility shift. The standard remains the same;m: Don't be a ------ person.

I also find it funny that the same people who defend police violence by saying "the suspect shouldn't have been breaking the law" and defend excessive government surveillance by saying "if you aren't doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about" are now the ones whining about a society in which the things they do wrong might actually be seen.

#34 | Posted by JOE at 2020-07-17 07:42 AM | Reply

#28 unlikely. Kaep got a Nike deal a mid pack QB would never get and has attention for a lifetime of income. The chick's that used to be Dixie had a massive sales boom and sold out tours. No money in radio play that got cancelled.

Aziz Ansari is a better example. Lost all his deals and has to climb back from a bad date.

Right Wing Cancel Culture has been a failure since at least the 90s. Right wing nuts were trying to cancel Harry Potter for promoting witchcraft long before left wing activists turned on Rowling. Left Wing Cancel Culture has such a terrible sense of humor that comedians don't play colleges, but it is far more effective at Woke Capitalism than the Right Wing could ever hope to be.
