Theo pops his head through the door of his tent and scrunches his nose against a cold breeze. A mop of coarse black hair sticks up as the 7-year-old rubs his eyes and puts on his glasses. No time to waste. The school bus will arrive in minutes

Berkeley officials said they have offered Gonzales permanent housing seven times, including five possible homes in the city. She lists a litany of allegations: City staffers worship the devil; they control the weather and make it rain on her tent; they are corrupt and trying to destroy her."

It's one thing if housing isn't available. Here, though, the mother had repeatedly been offered housing that she has turned down.

She is mentally ill and previously lost custody of another child who is now an adult. Clearly, she is now neglecting the needs of her 7 year old, who has his own mental difficulties, since she voluntarily refused housing.

Berkeley is failing miserably here. It should have placed this boy in a foster home or the home of a more stable relative years ago until the mother is in a condition to meet his basic needs.

The blame for this boy's homelessness and all the harm it causes him rests squarely on the shoulders of Berkeley for refusing to protect this child.

I agree, this situation takes a village. Where are the Christians providing solace? I'm certain 1% of the population will never understand this kind of societal heartbreak, so we can count them out - and ICE has exacerbated migrant housing and employment problems, but surely they aren't wanting to prohibit people getting a medical evaluation at minimum?

Where are the liberals with their pockets open?

Maybe we should stop telling people to come here. We don't have enough donations to take care of our homeless here, much less the people of other nations.

The mother is sick. The child needs to be taken and given to more capable hands. Period.

City needs to change its rules if the say the child doesn't meet the requirements to be removed from her care.
