Not the best solution.

That could cause other unforeseen problems.

But we have to do something. LA is out of control.

Wait.

LA has always been out of control.

Yeah

We're screwed.

Bad precedent. This kind of action paves the way for abuse of sick and elderly on the same property. Meds left unrefrigerated, animals unfed and food spoilage for others not involved in gathering is bad for the public.

Cutting the power for half an hour shouldn't kill anyone and if they have anyone on a ventilator they sure all hell shouldn't be having a party at the same location.

Too bad they can't fill a fire truck with very stinky water and then go over and hose down the party goers with it.

Next up in LA, dictator Garcetti will shut off your utilities if you dare to disagree with his policies on say, raising your taxes. That'll teach you subjects (you Angelinos are no longer citizens in a republic) that dare to voice an opposing opinion about his highness. Get the hell out of there while you still have the freedom to leave......

After you get the virus make sure you post here how you feel then. Until then just shut up, if leaders don't lead the pandemic will be here permanently. Americans are already unwelcome in many parts of the world because the world knows we have lots of asshats like you.

As one would predict, righties find shutting off one's electricity for a very clear, obvious reason (nothing subjective about a house packed with partiers) an affront to freedumb.

Meanwhile, federal LEO dragging people into unmarked vans and requiring they sign away their first amendment rights to be released is "meh".

#13 | Posted by jpw at 2020-08-07 09:32 AM | Reply

Every state provides its own legal recourse for tenants who are aggrieved by the landlord. California Civil Code 789.3 makes it illegal for the landlord to shut off the electricity to force a tenant out of the property. ... The statute allows an amount up to $100 per day for each day the electricity was turned off .

"After you get the virus make sure you post here how you feel then."

30,392 uniformed service members have contracted COVID. Four have died. Which means your odds of dying from COVID as a service member is 1/7598. Your overall odds of dying from it are around 1/525,000

Fact.

But I wouldn't be surprised if this gets challenged in court that the law prohibiting landlords from cutting off power will be used by the plaintiffs to argue this practice should be also illegal.

Don't get me wrong....desperate times call for desperate measures.

Take your pick...do you want police showing in riot gear to disband these parties or just shut the damn power off to chase them away?

I'm all for shutting off the power.

Problem is that it's reactionary. People have already mingled and spread it.

Americans genuinely lack (largely...) the capacity for long term thinking as a unit. We'll most certainly be replaced by China as the dominant world power because we're too self-centered to truly coalesce around an ideal.

Service member numbers are 1/7598.

There are 1.3 million service members. That would be 1/325,000.

Still can't figure out where his "overall odds of dying from it" is drawn from.

"His reference to service members only. "

And his declaration assumes the spread has stopped. Mine didn't; mine was contemporary, as in we've already had a higher number than your claim. His was these are the ongoing odds. Once more deaths are recorded, his "odds" will continue to change. Mine will stay fairly static, save a change of behavior.

Well, since less people have contracted it than 100% of service members, that would make his ratio even further off, right?

The number of uniformed service members is 2.1 million. Active Duty, Guard, and Reserve.

"What would happen to his ratio if 4 more servicemen died? What would happen to mine under the same circumstances?"

The number of new cases is rising faster than the number of deaths.

On Monday, the number of infected SM's was 29k and change. Yesterday it was more than 30k.

And to put it in perspective, between 400 and 500 SM's (Active Duty only) die each year in accidents. Normally, around 250-ish die of an illness.

I put people at risk any time I drive. Just like they put me at risk. And for most, it's a far greater risk than what's posed by COVID. Yet we still choose to drive.

Why?

Are those our only options?

No. They are not.

Another option is effective leadership and a federal response/mandate on how to deal with an attack on our nation by an outside force. THAT would be helpful right about now.

Or another option is we can just let the virus "wash over us" and allow hundreds of thousands of more Americans die.

That's Humpy's choice. Obviously.

" The number of new cases is rising faster than the number of deaths."

That has nothing to do with your "odds" other than make them worse. Your model already has accounted for 100% of the service in its denominator. As I pointed out, 4 more deaths would slash your "odds" by 50%.
Did you skip macrostatistics, or did you flunk the course?
