How does a judge justify this? Twenty years! So far!

"Pig Laws were largely designed to re-enslave African Americans," she wrote. Bryant's case, the chief justice said, demonstrates a "modern manifestation" of Pig Laws: "This man's life sentence for a failed attempt to steal a set of hedge clippers is grossly out of proportion to the crime and serves no legitimate penal purpose."

I knew he was a black man unjustly imprisoned just from the sentencing.

Also. He's been in prison since his whole life. What would you expect this guy to be able to do if he's released? His life is ruined over a pair of hedge cutters.

It's criminal.

It's Louisiana, what do you expect? If he'd stolen a few million dollars via some illegal financial scam that would be different. He'd be a free man.

Financial crimes aren't crimes. They're misunderstandings.

Stealing cheap chinese gardening tools is strictly forbidden by the bible.

He-Yump!

I am SO GLAD you posted this, MrSilenceDoGood.
Thank you.

This is repulsive at every level.

6 Judges. 5 white men, 1 black woman. Decision 5-1, you can guess. Five Supreme Pieces of ----. Attempted (alleged) theft of hedge clippers, 20 years in prison, 62 years old, and these FSPoS don't think the sentence was "harsh" or "excessive."

I live in the French Quarter and it's alright but go a mile in any direction and you'll find some bass akward folks for sure.

More proof that institutional racism in 'Merica is just a liberal myth.

Right, wingnuts?

Totally ridiculous, as all 3 strikes laws are. Change the frickin law.

Keeping his property up should have been a mitigating circumstance.

Bad joke. I feel sorry for the guy.

This was more about class then race. If he was rich and robbed let's say an election, or looted the US taxpayers for trillions he could use that loot to pay for his high powered phalanx of attorneys. I mean O.J. got away with killing his wife because he was rich and powerfully connected.
