Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, August 09, 2020

The United States set a record for coronavirus cases on Saturday, with more than 5 million people now infected, according to a Reuters tally, as the country's top infectious diseases official offered hope earlier this week that an effective vaccine might be available by year-end. With one out of every 66 residents infected, the United States leads the world in COVID-19 cases, according to a Reuters analysis. The country has recorded more than 160,000 deaths, nearly a quarter of the world's total.

So, we've more or less decided to let it wash over us... and it's still only got to one in 66 people?
And it needs, say 33 in 66 people to get to herd immunity?
This is going to last a lot longer than 18 months at this rate... unless of course the number of infected skyrockets real soon...
Oh, hey, aren't the schools about to open up again?

Thus far, the science indicates that there is no such thing as herd immunity with this virus.

RIGHTISTRITE, I hate to admit it but I agree with you completely.

Trump and the Trumpites made that decision for us.

They all deserve to die, and many of them will.

#6 - I hope that sentiment is building. It is with me. Trump being the most deserving, quickly followed by every single last one of his supporting, enabling, sycophantic crew.

Where did Republican callousness and cruelty originate? Did they have Ayn Rand stuffed up their asses as kids? What's wrong with these people?

#9 Abject fear of the unknown. A plague of the human condition.

Some people are curious about what they don't know and some people are afraid of what they don't know. Our "freedumb" treats the two equal.

US tops 5 million confirmed virus cases, to Europe's alarm
apnews.com

...Perhaps nowhere outside the U.S. is America's bungled virus response viewed with more consternation than in Italy, which was ground zero of Europe's epidemic. Italians were unprepared when the outbreak exploded in February, and the country still has one of the world's highest official death tolls at over 35,000.

But after a strict nationwide, 10-week lockdown, vigilant tracing of new clusters and general acceptance of mask mandates and social distancing, Italy has become a model of virus containment.

"Don't they care about their health?" a mask-clad Patrizia Antonini asked about people in the United States as she walked with friends along the banks of Lake Bracciano, north of Rome. ...

@#14 ... Republicans simply squandered it. ...

More from the article cited in #15...

...Much of the incredulity in Europe stems from the fact that America had the benefit of time, European experience and medical know-how to treat the virus that the continent itself didn't have when the first COVID-19 patients started filling intensive care units.

More than four months into a sustained outbreak, the U.S. reached the 5 million mark, according to the running count kept by Johns Hopkins University. Health officials believe the actual number is perhaps 10 times higher, or closer to 50 million, given testing limitations and the fact that as many as 40% of all those who are infected have no symptoms.

"We Italians always saw America as a model," said Massimo Franco, a columnist with daily Corriere della Sera. "But with this virus we've discovered a country that is very fragile, with bad infrastructure and a public health system that is nonexistent."....

"Health officials believe the actual number is perhaps 10 times higher, or closer to 50 million"

In a bizarre twist of fate we now have to hope that's true!

Since if it's only 1% after six months it seems impossible we'll be at herd immunity threshold ~70% this time next year...

Because if we do get from 1% to 70% in a year it can only be because the health care system completely collapses this winter. Which doesn't seem too unlikely to me. Maybe about as unlikely as Trump's win in 2016.

Snoofy,

The problem, as I understand it, is health experts studying patients who recovered from COVID-19 are saying that those who had mild or no symptoms don't develop much in the way of antibodies, and thus can be reinfected in a short amount of time.

#20 | Posted by AMERICANUNITY at 2020-08-09 10:17 PM | Reply

Yeah, kinda like how when you get a cold, which are pretty mild, you're not immune from colds forever.

So look forward to the new normal where there's just a cold that might kill you going around the world... and it's mostly America's fault.
