Democrats say that President Trump's assault on the U.S. Postal Service has handed them a new political message in the 2020 election, with a chance to make inroads with constituencies who have long favored Republicans. Those most affected by reports of slowdowns in delivery services include veterans, senior citizens and rural residents who have long voted Republican, arming Democratic challengers and incumbents with a salient campaign issue.

Admin's note: Participants in this discussion must follow the site's moderation policy. Profanity will be filtered. Abusive conduct is not allowed.

Democrats say Trump's move boosts them threefold: For one, it creates a space for Democrats to talk about policy issues that resonate at home -- taking care of veterans, prescription drugs, social security checks -- and arms them with a credible claim that Trump is putting his own reelection over those needs.

"Everyone depends on the USPS. Seniors for their Social Security, veterans for their prescriptions, small businesses trying to keep their doors open," Barack Obama tweeted Friday. "They can't be collateral damage for an administration more concerned with suppressing the vote than suppressing a virus."

In South Carolina, Rep. Joe Cunningham (D) said that 8 in 10 veterans in his district get their prescriptions by mail and 90 percent of those are delivered through the Postal Service.

"This is a blatant attack on our veterans, the majority of whom receive their prescriptions through the mail," said Cunningham, who's up for reelection in a district Trump won by nearly 13 points in 2016.

Democrats also believe they can use Trump's attempts to curb mail-in voting as a motivator to get people to vote early.

The USPS has a 91 percent approval rating as of the latest Pew Research survey done in April. It's the most prominent government service that touches every American's life on a daily basis, and Trump intentionally wants to make it function with less efficiency towards what ends and goals exactly? There's only one person that I can see who's served by sabotaging the USPS to the point it had to tell 46 states and DC that if their citizens post late mail-in ballots they may disenfranchise themselves since USPS cannot guarantee delivery on time to meet state mandated deadlines.

And this doesn't scratch the surface of all the daily problems slower and discarded mail will wreak for both businesses and individuals alike all for what reason again? As I said on another thread, Trump has finally figured out a way to piss off many in his own base - he's jacking with their mail delivery. And the GOP stands silent while he's doing it.

You would think Trump was smart enough to hide his intentions.. but president dumb dumb just blurts out that he wants to screw the post office just before they're needed the most.

Impeach again, and have the states file election meddeling charges that Trump can't pardon away.

Deja Vu all over again?

Impeach Impeached Trumpy!!

No one has ever been impeached twice. It could be another first for Trumpy. We should definitely do that. Too bad there isn't enough time. I guess we will have to be content with watching Trumpy flail about in the courts defending himself in his------------- Years like that other rapist poor old Bill Cosby.

Impeach again, and have the states file election meddeling charges that Trump can't pardon away.

A rep in New Jersey has already forwarded a charging recommendation to the state attorney general wanting him to seat a grand jury to investigate the postal service's intentional slowdown and apparent attempt to restrict mail-in voting.

I doubt that he will be the last. Since impeding the work of the USPS is itself a violation of federal law, this is not going to end well for this Postmaster General - who managed to visit Trump in the Oval Office right before his testimony before Congress last week, a meeting that Trump foolishly lied about not having just yesterday.

Messing with the people's mail service and removing mailboxes from streets all over America is not just a blue issue, it's a red white and blue issue. Both of Montana's Republican reps (and Democrat Jon Tester) fired off angry letters to the PG yesterday after being bombarded with calls from their constituents about mailboxes being hauled away right before their eyes. The Postal Service immediately halted the practice and said it wouldn't be restarted until after the election.

Republican senators and reps better get out in front of this before it steamrolls all of their electoral chances. Standing with Trump as he intentionally tries to destroy the Postal Service for his own reelection is not a great campaign message.

So now we have Combover Caligula on recording multiple times, saying he will get rid of the payroll tax, which means that he intends to destroy Medicare and SS, the two most popular government programs ever. Now be attacks the USPS the method by which many seniors and vets get their medications and checks. Is he trying to give VP Biden all the red states too? Dotard's fumbling of the Coronavirus has already given the Biden/Harris ticket an advantage with seniors, please push the rest over.

Sorry Tony, the USPS has been unreliable and incompetent for years. want to make sure your ballot gets to where it needs to? Call FEDEX or UPS, the guys that took the USPS business away. they did it by making sure their packages and letters were delivered unlike the USPS.

an even better joke, insure mail with the USPS, then when it does not arrive try to collect for it,lol, it is a joke. the USPS is not capable of delivering the mail dependably.

"Simple answer, get off your --- and go to the voting booth and vote."

That's like saying you should go to the cable company to pay your bill instead of just writing a check.

In other words, it's the much more complicated answer.

And it's also clear from your answer you're calling Democrat voters "lazy." Now where have we heard that stereotype before...

Dems can have all the campaign messages they want. If ballots aren't delivered to voters a timely fashion or properly postmarked for return i don't know what difference it makes.

I will say this though: I don't think Trump's sabotage of the post office is going to somehow erase many votes. I think it's going to create an argument he is going to use in litigation to try to stop the counting.

"the USPS has been unreliable and incompetent for years"

You're such a sad sack liar. Everyone else reports 99%+ success rate. You're stuck on the other end of the spectrum, with nothing left but made-up bullschitt.

But if you're looking for unreliable and incompetent...check your mirror.

I'd like to claim it, but that's courtesy of the brilliant John Fugelsang.

This ignores the fact that I'm many red states, they've also shut down voting centers in cities and counties that tend to vote predominantly Democratic.

When it comes to voter suppression. The Republican Party are masters.

Republicans hate this country. Which is why they're doing everything they can to suppress voters.

If Trump wins in 2020. The USPS won't be the last thing he destroys.
