An eyewitness to the shooting in Portland told the Washington Post that the victim sprayed multiple people with bear mace and was shot moments later.
"I heard the yelling, and I turned, and the first thing I saw was the bear mace being sprayed, and then right on the heels of that were the gunshots," said Justin Dunlap, a lighting technician from nearby Vancouver, Wash., who recorded the widely circulated video and broadcast it live on Facebook.
Dunlap, 44, said when the gunshots were fired, "the guy who had sprayed the bear mace turned and took three or four steps and then went face down. While he was doing that, the two that he had bear maced ran back in my general direction and kind of went around the corner."
The video of the shooting from Justin Dunlap is 20-30 feet away and does appear to have a spraying sound and a cloud before the first shot, but it's hard to tell definitively.
Dunlap told the New York Post the victim had "earlier maced people, and someone could be heard on his video shouting that the victim was a '------------ who has been pushing people and jumping people the entire time.'"
"That guy has been f"king with people the entire time," [someone] shouted."
Spraying bear mace and similar sprays has been prosecuted as felony assault. I don't know how it would impact a self-defense claim, but reportedly the claims that the victim wasn't doing anything at all are not true.
In any case it's another situation where someone brought a gun to political demonstrations, a terrible phenomenon in the Trump era that will continue to wreak carnage in this country.
