The Trump administration said it will not join a global effort to develop, manufacture and equitably distribute a coronavirus vaccine, in part because the World Health Organization is involved, a decision that could shape the course of the pandemic and the country's role in health diplomacy.

Last night we were discussing the pandemic from a global perspective on how it could serve to unite the nations of the world because it is a common threat to all of us and we should be cooperating with every nation in the world to combat it. Then this morning I read this thread and am, as usual, totally disgusted by the non-leadership of Trump. What a f*****g a*****e! Sorry, but no other words can describe him better, he is a disease on America and humanity, the sooner we cure Trumpism the sooner America will heal.

We don't need no stinking global vaccine effort. Ammonia, Lysol, lemon bleach and bat piss are proven remedies. Just awaiting for approval, after the election of course, by the FDA thugs.

#11 | Posted by brass30 at 2020-09-02 09:13 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 2

So basically, if a German company came up with a real vaccine before any American company did Trump would prefer to allow more Americans to die rather than accept help from the German company. Donald Trump is out of his mind and his supporters are just in denial because, to admit it, they would have to agree with liberals and they just can't bring themselves to do that even if it costs them their lives. Think....Herman Cain. Perfect example.

Would any sane person allow themselves to be vaccinated with it? A Russian friend of mine actually took me aside the other day to warn me that he thinks Trump is going to try the same thing Putin is doing, i.e.; create a vaccine and inoculate millions without adequately testing it.

The article refers to it as though we are going without insurance.

Meaning the reward is that if we have our own vaccine then we can disperse it quicker here before we have to make it available to other countries?

Is that the reward we are gambling for?

Possibly, but I suspect it has more to do with not being constrained by the WHO and 170 other countries in declaring that a vaccine has been created just in time time for the election. The WHO would probably require such a vaccine to exist and at least have a high chance of working.

Trump? Just part of a re-election strategy.

Trump certainly wants people to think he's got this covered.

That the vaccine will be announced prior to the election.

This strategy can't be just to make his followers happy. That won't get him re-elected. He has to convince more than just those folks it's a real vaccine and the decision to go alone rather than join the WHO on this was the right decision.

Biden will hang him for it otherwise.

"Meaning the reward is that if we have our own vaccine then we can disperse it quicker here before we have to make it available to other countries?"

Once a vaccine is successfully created and tested they could easily provide the information for manufacturing to many countries around the world which would not delay distribution and inoculations here at all. So, is Trump saying that if and when we have a vaccine ready for mass inoculations we would withhold it from other nations? That would be a crime against humanity IMHO.

Phester, you'd be cute with that if it wasn't deadly stupid. Trump doesn't give a ---- about you or the American people. Not one bit. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. He's fine with people he knows dying - like Herman Cain. The only reason he appears to give a ---- is so he can get applause and praise. Don't confuse his actions to get that for love of anything other than himself.

You don't seem to grasp how many vaccines are out there.

And they're not that far behind, if they are behind at all, in development.

There is no need for the a vaccine developed in the US if it's going to cost an arm and a leg.

It's also interesting that you're cheering for a limiting of consumer choice. How much more fascist can you get than "take this vaccine and like it"?

Vaccines help all of us, so it is in our own self-interest to get as many people vaccinated as possible. Making a boat-load of money off of vaccines runs counter to that public health goal.

Have people lost their frikken minds?

Not at all. If there are tariffs on vaccines (by the US) it will just box out non-US sourced vaccines for US consumption.

We'll be stuck with those developed and licensed here while the rest of the world vaccinates and moves on.

Guess that won't be Trump's fault either, will it?

#45 | Posted by jpw at 2020-09-02 03:42 PM | Reply

This thread is all over the map and doesn't make much sense. Are you against a US based Vaccine? Are you for a foreign based Vaccine? Are you OK with a vaccine from Germany but not from someplace like Spain or Russia? Do you trust the WHO to tell the truth? Do you trust the FDA and their testing? Are you not taking a vaccine at all? Do you fear that Trump is putting poison in the vaccine to kill us? What countries testing do you trust the most? My biggest fear here is that there's so much distrust that few will take the vaccine and we'll never get out of this pandemic. Maybe what we'd need is live televised joint injection event where both Trump and Biden get the vaccine on TV. The problem there is that I'm sure many of you would think they got water and not the real vaccine. I for one trust our FDA and I will take the vaccine that's been certified by our FDA. I will not trust any vaccine certified by any other country. I too agree that it sounds like most of these vaccine programs are on similar time-tracks so even if the US vaccine is delayed, it won't be far behind others.

Why? In many regards Euro safety standards are higher and more rigorous than here.

The two US vaccines I'm most familiar with are new technology that's never been used beyond experimental stages before.

The lead one in Europe is actually also largely experimental but a better platform IMO as it will induce an immune response more like actual SARS-CoV-2 infection than the US candidates. I know there are experimental vaccines in the US using a similar platform but none that are in clinical trials yet (as far as I know).

In any case, it's unnecessarily cutting ourselves out of the loop and reinventing our own wheel instead of working with others, getting a vaccine made that's tested rigorously and distributing depending on need. America is yet again showing her short sighted selfishness and greed.

Who do you think is paying those tariffs? I'll give you a hint, it isn't the company exporting their product to the U.S. It won't be the company importing it to the U.S., either. They'll just tack it on to the price.

What "other taxes" do you think we're going to be collecting from non-U.S. companies? I'm pretty sure the tax cut the Republicans passed a few years ago reduced those taxes, as well as on the U.S. companies.

So where, exactly, are these Billions coming from?
