I heard this on the radio a few minutes ago. I believe Trump has just started a war he can't win.

Wow, Trump's minion just threw the Democrats (and likely many pro military Republicans) another issue of outrage on the heels of his degradation of military service and sacrifice coming to the fore.

The malevolence of Trump's words and actions are unprecedented in American history.

Very bad timing for un-parotitic Donnie in light of the Atlantic article that came out yesterday and was backed up by subsequent reporting by the AP and WaPo.

Stars and Stripes funding exists in the House approved Defense bill, waiting to be weighed in on by the Senate, doesn't that mean there's a chance for the publisher's survival?

WTF?!

On the heels of his 'losers and suckers' comments, in addition to his comments to Gen. Kelly at his son's graveside, paints a picture of a draft evading moron with actual contempt for the military.

In areas were there isn't any internet, the Stars & Stripes makes its way to U.S. forces wherever they are.

And with a budget of $15,000,000, ending publication won't make a dent in the $721 BILLION military budget.

Just called my GOP Congressman. His office doesn't know what the Stars and Stripes is, or who Ernie Pile was.

I neglected to ask if they know what World War II was.

"The Pentagon has ordered Stars and Stripes to shut down for no good reason
was the actual title of Kathy Kiely's piece in today's Stars & Stripes. Just yesterday they published an Associated Press story entitled, Report claims Trump disparaged US war dead as 'losers,' 'suckers'. Such reports have had the Stars & Stripes, a venerable publication since 1861 in Donald Trump's crosshairs almost his entire presidency. I'm almost never shocked at the depths that Trump will stoop to but this really is beyond the pale."

1) Not enough people kiss his ass. In the specific case of the Stars and Stripes, he's punishing servicemen for polls showing they don't kiss his ass.

2) Donald Trump is a Russian agent.

You know what? I feel angry. I'm always pissed off thinking about Trump but at this moment I can feel the heat on my face.

This action against a revered newspaper is a taste of what Trump will attempt to do to all media if he gets a second term. Hell, given the pressure he's under I would not be surprised if he takes MORE action now.

From the cited article...

...The first Stars and Stripes rolled off presses Nov. 9, 1861 in Bloomfield, Missouri when forces headed by Ulysses Grant overran the tiny town on the way to Cape Girardeau. A group of Grant's troops who had been pressmen before the war set up shop at a local newspaper office abandoned by its Confederate sympathizer publisher. Since then Stars and Stripes has launched the careers of famous journalists such as cartoonist Bill Mauldin and TV commentator Andy Rooney. And its independence from the Pentagon brass has been guaranteed by such distinguished military leaders at Gens. John G. Pershing, George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower. Eisenhower once reprimanded Gen. George Patton for trying to censor Mauldin cartoons he didn't like.

Today Stars and Stripes is printed at sites around the world and delivered daily to troops " even those on the front lines, where the internet is spotty or inaccessible. As the "local paper" for the military, it provides intensive and critical coverage of issues that are important to members of the nation's armed services and "cuts through political and military brass BS talking points," Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., a Marine veteran, told Military.com.

It's also arguably one of the most powerful weapons our soldiers have carried into battle with them. As a publication that's underwritten by the military but not answerable to the brass, Stars and Stripes embodies that most American of values: the right to speak truth to power....

[emphasis mine]

Speaking truth to power. Hmmmm... that may be why Pres Trump wants to shut it down. or maybe it is that Pres Trump just doesn't like the military.

Shutting down the press to prevent and undermine the free flow of information and the freedom of the press is exactly what strong arm dictators do.

This news breaking today only adds fuel to the fire that is Trump's actual disparaging U.S. military personnel as 'losers.'

Here's another newly reported Trump anti-military nugget:

Following The Atlantic's report, The Washington Post also reported that Trump frequently disparaged veterans and troops missing in action, also calling them "losers." Citing a former senior administration official, The Post reported that Trump told senior advisers he didn't understand why the military so valued finding missing troops. He said if they were captured, they deserved what they got, one source told The Post.

I have no doubt that this was done by Pentagon Brass without the knowledge of Trump. Generals can do that, make some decisions without having the explicit ok of the President. This sounds like one of those times.

I'm wondering why you military haters are so wound up over this?

People who want to reduce the size of the military = "military haters"? Is that how the CONservitive mind translates it?

I see this as either Trump is trying to cut the Troops off from a source of reasonably factual information, or Trump is playing a campaign tactic. Is there really any doubt that Trump is concerned (as he should be) that he's lost the support of the military?

What? Holy ----.
The Stars and Stripes was one of my first real jobs out of college.
Back then they didn't even have the domain name, it was camped by some internet entrepreneur. You had to go to stripes.osd.mil to get the web version.
This is a huge loss for the troops. But certainly understandable in the era of Internet connectedness.
I feel bad for the guys stuck on or under the ocean for months at a time.

It's just like Trump, who spends his free time golfing, to not understand the value of Morale, Recreation, and Welfare for the troops.

The memo ordering the publication's dissolution claims the administration has the authority to make this move under the president's fiscal year 2021 defense department budget request. It zeroed out the $15.5 million annual subsidy for Stars and Stripes. But Congress, which under the Constitution has the power to make decisions about how the public's money is spent, has not yet approved the president's request.

So don't accept the LIE that this started from the Pentagon, this came from -------- White House.

Trump Says He Will Reverse Pentagon Plan to Close Newspaper That Informs and Speaks for Troops

Updated 4:32 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON " President Trump said late Friday that he planned to reverse Pentagon budget cuts that would have permanently closed Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper that has both informed and spoken for American troops over the decades.

"The United States of America will NOT be cutting funding to @starsandstripes magazine under my watch," Mr. Trump posted on Twitter several hours after major news organizations began publishing stories about the pending closure of the newspaper. "It will continue to be a wonderful source of information to our Great Military!"

What a transparent reaction to the outrage - and another obligatory denial of ANY responsibility for what is happening under his own watch.
