Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, September 09, 2020

President Trump's head popped up during his top-secret intelligence briefing in the Oval Office on Jan. 28 when the discussion turned to the novel coronavirus outbreak in China. "This will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency," national security adviser Robert O'Brien told Trump, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward. "This is going to be the roughest thing you face."

Ten days later, Trump called Woodward and revealed that he thought the situation was far more dire than what he had been saying publicly.

"You just breathe the air and that's how it's passed," Trump said in a Feb. 7 call. "And so that's a very tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's also more deadly than even your strenuous flu."

"This is deadly stuff," the president repeated for emphasis.

At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear, and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control.

Trump admitted to Woodward on March 19 that he deliberately minimized the danger. "I wanted to always play it down," the president said.

The book is based in part on 18 on-the-record interviews Woodward conducted with the president between December and July.

Lordy, lordy, Bob Woodward has tapes on all of these Trump quotes. Somewhere, James Comey must have a giant smile on his face. Trump admits to gambling with American lives towards his own ends. He violated his oath to his office and the Constitution.

Trump is the greatest enemy this nation has ever faced from inside its own government, using his full power malevolently for his own benefit, never, if ever, for America's.

I was making the rounds through the news stations on my sling streaming service and ran across CNN reporting this. They were playing audio that Woodward provided and said that he has 18 recorded interviews. I would bet that Trumps handlers had no idea what was really being said. It sounded like Trump called Woodward in several instances and they were late evening/night calls. I posted in the Nooner that it will be interesting to see the Trump butt kissers try to talk his way out of this. Imagine how many lives could have been saved had we imposed social distance and mask measures sooner?!

Wow, while history doesn't repeat itself, it often rhymes.

Bob Woodward's journalism almost 50 years ago helped take down the Richard Nixon presidency.

Bob Woodward's latest journalism may be one of the final nails in the coffin of Donald Trump's presidency. And he is going to release the audio tapes of his interviews to erase any doubt that Trump actually said what he's reporting.

Woodward has been historically relevant in checking the authoritarian impulses of two U.S. Presidents through his reporting and writing. If he hasn't already received one, here's hoping that he receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom .... from President Joe Biden.

I saw the tweet, I am meaning commercializing the audio and showing how many lives could have been saved. This is going to impact blue and red people across the nation. Everyone has been affected by Corona virus and he knew how deadly it was but was advocating for it to "wash over" us.

The Woodward book is full of many damning revelations, it's going to be hard to focus on just one. Trump let his guard down because of his narcissism. Hopefully, this time will lead to his ultimate and lasting downfall.

@#1 ... Trump admits to gambling with American lives towards his own ends. ...

It is interesting how many opinions of Pres Trump and his actions, opinions that have been strongly criticized by Trump supporters, are turning out to be correct as evidence is surfaced.

I wonder if the Trump supporters will change their views of Pres Trump because of the emerging evidence?

All because Trump wants to and likes playing it down.

We don't really have to imagine:
"If this doctor, who so recklessly flew into New York from West Africa, has Ebola, then Obama should apologize to the American people & resign!"
~DJT, October 2014

This, after 11 cases, and two deaths.

Using that metric, Trump should've resigned 95,000 times.

President Donald Trump and his administration have ordered a halt to screenings of international airline passengers entering the United States, and ordered the end of the program to be "secret until a public announcement is made," Yahoo News reports.

As on 12:01 AM Monday, Sept. 14, "all screenings will come to a halt." That includes temperature checks and health questions related to potential COVID-19 symptoms, as well as contact information which is used for contact tracing - one of the best methods for containing the spread of the coronavirus.

"Without that information, it likely won't be possible to contact passengers on a flight who may have potentially been exposed to someone infected with COVID-19," Yahoo adds.

The shut down of the screening program comes just before the start of flu season, which is expected to be especially deadly this year, and amid a rise in coronavirus infections across the country.

The book charts the Trump administration's failings and missteps on the pandemic, as well as the decisions and actions of Pottinger, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield, infectious-disease expert Anthony S. Fauci and others.

Fauci at one point tells others that the president "is on a separate channel" and unfocused in meetings, with "rudderless" leadership, according to Woodward. "His attention span is like a minus number," Fauci said, according to Woodward. "His sole purpose is to get reelected."

One of the main things this books makes manifestly clear is that there were many "adults" who recognized that Trump is wholly unfit for the office that he holds. Perhaps this is the ultimate moment where many of those named in this book will too go before cameras or give interviews on the record and tell the world out loud what they've reportedly whispered for years.

Trump has metaphorically walked down the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue, opened his mouth and shot America in its heart with his lying words.

I guess we will find out if enough think that doing so disqualifies him from being reelected. And the mere doubt in having to even ponder the answer speaks volumes about how far down the rabbit hole Trump has taken this nation in service of his own depravity.

President Trump tweeted this exactly six months ago:

"So last year 37,000 Americans died from the common Flu. It averages between 27,000 and 70,000 per year. Nothing is shut down, life and the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of Coronavirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!"

Six months later, there are nearly 200,000 dead from the coronavirus.

America dies. Almost 200,000 of us.

Congratulations GOP! You built this. And don't kid yourselves for one moment. Had Trump sounded the alarms like the leadership did in much of Europe the death toll would be much, much lower. Maybe 10% of what it now is.

Doesn't matter to Trump supporters. Woodward could post videos of Der Dotard molesting wives, daughters, pets and cherry pies and most of his supporters would still vote for him. They love that he says what they think, and they think Trump's judges will save the US from all those they hate...

Quelle surprise...

Republicans Defend Trump After He Admitted Downplaying True Threat Of COVID-19

"It doesn't bother me," Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota told reporters. "I don't feel like he was ever lying to anybody. He's a hopeful, upbeat, positive person. ... The gravity of it, when it was becoming clearer, was also reflected by him."

Cramer said that Trump "wanted to give people hope rather than despair" and pointed to his travel ban on China as proof that the president took the virus seriously.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina similarly argued that voters should take more heed of Trump's actions amid the pandemic rather than his rhetoric which has been all over the place in recent months, from briefly encouraging mask-wearing and social distancing to mocking Democrats and reporters for wearing masks.

"I don't think he needs to be on TV screaming, We're all going to die,'" Graham said Wednesday. "His actions shutting the economy down were the right actions."

I would love to see every Democrat running for a national office turn these revelations into a non-stop indictment for eradicating every single Republican on the ballot who doesn't immediately condemn what President Trump has now admitted to having done.

The fact of the matter is that the Democrats have been right all along about his unfitness for the office along with his criminal behavior and dereliction of duty in failure to perform his constitutional duties. They are as complicit in Trump's malevolence as he is, and every single one of them - but for Mitt Romney - should be tied to his actions as if they were their own. Republicans allowed Trump to needlessly kill almost 200,000 Americans still with no end in sight. They all should be drawn and quartered, but due to our times, voting them out of office will have to suffice. They really don't care, do you?

Currently, the image in my head of a "typical" Trump supporter is one I saw on the news the other night. A fat, hairy bearded, forty-something year old White guy dressed in military fatigues shooting his paint ball rifle at BLM protesters in Portland from the back of a slow moving pick-up truck.

Funny, I didn't see South Koreans panic when their government told them the unvarnished truth. Didn't see the citizens of Wuhan panic either, nor did the Italians, the Spanish, the Brits, the New Zealanders, the Aussies, the Japanese, nor the Canadians.

Wonder why Trump thinks that Americans are such snowflakes that we couldn't handle the truth about a global pandemic that eerily mirrored one from almost exactly 100 years ago? I guess that's his concept of American exceptionalism made manifest: We're exceptionally prone to panic when given bad news so we need daddy to protect us which has led to 200,000 people dying.

Doesn't sound like the America you know, or better yet does it look like he actually protected us? Me neither. Kinda shows that the dunsel voters elected POTUS doesn't know very much about the spirit and strength of Americans.

I wouldn't begin to try to claim I understand Trump...but let's just play devil's advocate and guess what was going on in his head.

Trump may have talked with virus experts...but I'm sure he also talked with people about possible scenarios how things would play out nationwide about more than just the virus.

Here's what we have seen.

Millions and millions of people in the US suffering economically. Jobs lost that will never return. Businesses closed that will never reopen. Permanent destruction of people's livelihoods with very little chance of ever regaining what they've lost.

And ONLY (yes I said only) 200K people have died.

And millions and millions are without financial stability and many will likely not see it again for decades and maybe never in their lifetime.

I've said before....I do wonder how people in the future will talk about this virus and our handling of it.

Liberals naturally assume there will be all sorts of condemnation of the president for knowingly not taking action sooner.

But we don't know. From what we're hearing today about what was known, it's sounding like there wasn't much of anything that could be done to successfully stop this tsunami. Some people like to think we could have stopped it but could we really?

People in the future are going to be the ones stuck with this financial disaster and may not look back so kindly on the US going deeper and deeper in the financial abyss and destroying so many lives. Sure a lot of people haven't died but their lives have died in other ways.

Back to my original opening statement about playing devil's advocate.

Maybe Trump did knowingly postpone taking action and shutting down the country because he also knew what would be the financial consequences.

As terrible as this sounds....really....I hate to even write this....how many deaths would have been better than destroying the lives of millions and millions of people and families?

There is no winning at this.

Do you suppose some democrats saw this as leverage to bring the US headlong into socialism and would explain why they were so eager to shut down the economy?

Your defense of Trump is only a searing indictment. Trump tried it his way and your own post tells of the results. 200,000 dead. Millions and millions without. Businesses that will never reopen.

And we're supposed to believe it would have been worse if Trump had told America the truth? It would have been worse if Trump actually led the country by warning the people of what was to come? It's like saying we shouldn't warn people about hurricanes.

He's STILL lying and misleading. Making a mockery of the simplest things like social distancing and wearing masks. People are dying and the economy is going further down the hole because of what Trump is doing NOW.

You're right Comrade, Americans are different than other countries; America is the only first-world country where science is up for debate; where well-known, peer reviewed facts are rejected by almost half the population in favor of screwed up religious doctrine; where a broad swath of morons has been convinced to vote against their own self-interests in favor of a party that hates them and favors the rich because the party they vote for might some day outlaw a legal and often times life-saving medical procedure that is endorsed by Gawd in the Book of Numbers.

My wife is from Thailand, where you have to pay to send your kid to school. When she learned that public education was free to attend and because America is such a rich country she assumed that Americans would be smarter and better educated than the folks in Thailand. She used to shake her head over the debate on global warming saying that it's accepted fact in Thailand that global warming is real, a serious problem, and man-made. Now she shakes her head over the anti-maskers who follow their cult leader who we learned again today lied to his cult, and could care less if they and their family die with COVID, as long as he gets reelected.

Imagine if we had a serious leader in the White House who cared about everyone in this country, not just those who praise him or pay him. Imagine a leader who would not have blocked importing tests from overseas and wouldn't have blocked US based labs from creating their own tests in late January. That leader would not have fired the national security council's pandemic team. What if they would have immediately lifted tariffs on all imported medical supplies that made it difficult and more expensive for the country to meet it's needs. What if they would have invested international research efforts instead of wasting money and time on unproven "miracle" cures? How many infections would have been prevented? How much further along would we be with our research?
What if that leader would have implemented a true travel ban or quarantine order for anyone, citizen or otherwise, who was traveling to the US from China/Europe and other hotspots around the world. What might have happened had instead of calling reporting of it a hoax, and providing encouragement to those who protested shelter in place orders and mask mandates that leader would have told the truth to the people of the country from the start instead of insisting the virus wasn't that serious and would just disappear? How many lives and businesses would that type of leadership might have saved?

That's because Trump committed the Original Sin: making the one mitigating possibility, wearing a mask, a political statement. If America has its share of deaths, and no more, 135,000 Americans would still be alive.

But f^ck science, right?

Donald Trump called Bob Woodward a liar because he didn't like his last book. He said it was full of lies.

Why would he agree to another interview with Bob Woodward for another book ??

What is wrong with this mans mind??? Does he have a mind? What was he thinking?? Can he even think?

The United States is #1 in Covid deaths and 11th in deaths per capita. Out of 215 countries. There is plenty that could be done. Virtually everyone else did it. We didn't.

There is no winning at this.

Perhaps not, but there is losing and there is losing badly. We're doing the latter, because we hired an idiot to run the country. It doesn't need to be made any more complicated than that.

Back in January 2020 when Trump was told this virus was going to be a threat to national security, Trump saw a once-in-a-lifetime chance to become a conquering hero in the eyes of America, thus finding his place in the sun and cementing his place in history.

Yeah Right. Who am I kidding? Trump never thought any such thing.

Knowing him, Trump's first thought was "How is this going to affect me" and made a conscious decision to take the route that has always served him well. That is to lie, deny, lie, deny, and to keep on lying right up to the present time to avoid facing the awful truth about how many Americans have died on his watch as a direct result of his own incompetence.

A normal person would crawl into a hole in shame and not come out for years. NOT TRUMP. He thinks he should be re-elected.

@#76 ... I am still baffled as to why Trump would be talking to Bob Woodward 18 times? ...

That is a puzzler.

Even more puzzling is that Pres Trump's aides reportedly were not aware of the 18 interviews and possibly were blindsided when they read of them in the media.

Pres Trump is now trying to back away from the interviews, calling them a political hit job, that Mr Woodward always does political hit jobs with his interviews.

But 18 interviews. Pres Trump did not realize what might have been going on halfway into the first interview? Even when he had the opinion of Mr Woodward that he did?

Once again, I wonder how well, or poorly, Pres Trump does in those one-on-one meetings with Pres Putin if this is what happens for on-the-record interviews with a journalist.

@#83 ... "It's just a Democratic Hoax" ...

That is a major point in all this.

Not only did Pres Trump wrongly play it down to not induce a panic, he went further and politicized it.

Pres Trump saw COVID-19 as a way to split the Country since the early states to be affected were mostly blue states.

So, regardless of whether or not Pres Trump showed proper leadership when he tried to play down the virus (my opinion is that he abdicated any possibility of leadership with that action)...

Pres Trump went beyond that abdication of leadership and joined forces with COVID-19 (the "invisible enemy"), encouraged his supporters to join forces with the invisible enemy, and helped that enemy kill Americans on their home soil.

I said this from the very beginning, even on this site. No POTUS in history ever comes out and starts a panic over something we know little about. Now, that's not to say they don't cover things up or use the guise of intelligence findings to get their way. But Trump was doing what all POTUS's do, he was taking a calm approach to the situation because the first few months saw us know very little about covid. Put it this way, Libs have blasted him over every little thing that has turned out to be wrong about possible treatments. Imagine if Trump had come out and started saying everyone is going to die and the whole country needs to shut down...Libs would have even more bs in their articles. We already see some of the problems with shutting down a few months ago. Once more information comes out, the POTUS starts to respond accordingly. That's how intelligent people and countries operate.

@#89 ... But Trump was doing what all POTUS's do, he was taking a calm approach to the situation because the first few months saw us know very little about covid. ...

That looks like after-the-fact rationalization.

Pres Trump politicized COVID-19 for his own political gain.. That is not what all POTUS's do.

... Imagine if Trump had come out and started saying everyone is going to die and the whole country needs to shut down. ...Libs would have even more bs in their articles....

Such drama. That is not what a real leader would do. That is the result of the monsters under your bed.

Pres Trump could have done one simple thing from the beginning...

Tell everyone to wear a mask. Instead Pres Trump politicized the wearing of masks, and continues to do so (e.g., a recent press conference).

... Once more information comes out, the POTUS starts to respond accordingly. That's how intelligent people and countries operate. ...

Yet once more information came out and was known about COVID-19, Pres Trump continued his politicization of it. he was told how bad it was back in the spring.

So yes, once more is known about COVID-19, intelligent people respond accordingly.

So why did not Pres Trump respond accordingly? Why did Pres Trump continue to politicize it?

Imagine if Trump had come out and started saying everyone is going to die and the whole country needs to shut down

Wrong approach too. Why such an extreme? Why is either everything is okay or we're all going to die.

The American public (I know I do) want to be informed so we can make intelligent decisions.

Trump not only created a divide, but often went against his own administration.........

Poor, poor leadership. And his revealed "downplayed it" quote tells you all you need to know.

He f'd up, big time. He gambled on it vanishing - and it hasn't.

And Trump's word mean a ton.

I just read a POLTICO article where people were signing up to vote in PA and they go

"I want to be on the Trump team."

-"You mean the Republican party?"

"Oh, is that what it is?"

They idolize this guy, and listen to what he says. So when he mocks masks, social distancing, wants to open schools, pushes against his own scientists/experts........there are just no words for the President of the United States to act.

And the really sad thing is, a large chunk of our population like it.

1. "No POTUS in history ever comes out and starts a panic..."
His policy followed his claims that it was just like the flu...and 200,000 are dead. And

2. "...over something we know little about."
We knew that we should be taking precautions, that it was five times deadlier than the flu and airborne. Trump lied about this.

3. "But Trump was doing what all POTUS's do, he was taking a calm approach to the situation because the first few months saw us know very little about covid."
Trump lied about everything we did KNOW and got people to ignore basic precautions. NO PRESIDENT DOES THIS.

4. "Libs have blasted him over every little thing that has turned out to be wrong about possible treatments."
He PLAYED DOCTOR and pushed treatments that studies show didn't work and got people killed. He ignored the studies. That's not a little thing.

5. "Imagine if Trump had come out and started saying everyone is going to die and the whole country needs to shut down."
He didn't have to say that. Instead of saying it's under control, will magically be gone, and is no worse than the flu, he could have done what the Obama Administration did: BE ------- HONEST.

6. "Libs would have even more bs in their articles."
And then you might have a defense. BUT YOU DON'T. HE LIED AND GOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KILLED.

7. "We already see some of the problems with shutting down a few months ago."
YES PEOPLE IGNORED THE SHUT DOWN BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED THAT IT WAS NO WORSE THAN THE FLU. Wonder where they got that idea? (Hint: Trump and Fox)

8. "Once more information comes out, the POTUS starts to respond accordingly."
YOU ------- IDIOT. THE INFORMATION WAS OUT. THIS WAS INFORMATION THE PRESIDENT KNEW TO BE TRUE AND HE LIED ABOUT IT. HOW ------- STUPID ARE YOU THAT YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS?!

9. "That's how intelligent people and countries operate."
Intelligent people and countries took the information that Trump had and made policy decisions on it. They don't have Coronavirus issues right now. Trump ignored it and lied about it. Now we have nearly 200,000 dead, a couple million with health issues still, a couple trillion wasted dollars, and an economy in tatters.

Trump Voters should no longer have the right to vote. You're traitors to your country and too stupid to be trusted with the right.

Own up to what Trump has done here. Remember the panic Trump induced when advocating for his wall? Yeah, me too. Trump's excuse that he misled the country to stave off a panic is complete bull ----.

"The coronavirus is the worst we've ever seen and everyone is going to DIE!" is not what people would have hoped for in terms of honesty.

"The coronavirus is real, a serious concern, and we as a nation must come together, develop a homeostasis political environment so that the American people can be protected by their leaders and experts utilizing the best practices of science and medicine."

JFC! I just came up with the latter off the top of my head. Would that have been so fnkcing hard for Trump to accomplish? You really think the latter statement would have led to panic?

You and Trump put a lot of faith in the American people and their exceptionalism, don't you? Pfffft hahahahahahahahhaha!

Hasn't everyone caught on to the only "panic" President Trump has ever been worried about?

In actuality, he already made that perfectly clear when Nancy Messonier made her first and only public statements about what the onrushing pandemic had in store for all Americans on February 25.

He was never worried about the American people panicking; he was only concerned with INVESTORS panicking and destroying his "beautiful" stock market - the foundation of his entire reelection campaign.

Money - and his own political survival - has always more important than life to Trump, particularly when it's his own life that was being threatened.

Famous Moments in American History (if Trump had been President)

December 7, 1941: There was a small accident in Hawaii today and a few American soldiers and ships received some minor damage. I've been in touch with Emperor Hirohito - we get along greatly - I'm a big fan of his work in Southeast Asia. The guy's a doer, I like doers. He's assured me that what happened today was merely a training accident and nothing to be worried about. He assured me that Trump Hiroshima is still scheduled to open late summer 1945.

October 1962: The Deep State has been wrongly reporting that my dear friend Niki Khrushchev - man what a great guy - is placing a few surplus ballistic missiles in Cuba that are no threat whatsoever to the United States - of which I have always been the greatest defender of ever, even greater than the overrated George Washington. You know that his teeth were rotten, right? Anyway, Fidel and I are just a few days away from announcing the most fantastic resort in the history of resorts - Trump Havana.

September 11, 2001: It's with sadness that I speak with you today in the aftermath of a great tragedy. As I'm sure you now know, my good friend Larry Silverstein - fellow real estate tycoon, but not really on my level you understand - lost three buildings today due to a few bad Saudi's and some airplanes. I've lost many friends and I'll forever mourn their passing as soon as I finish golfing and can remember who they are. Have you ever seen weather like this? No clouds in the sky whatsoever, man I'll get in 36 today easy. Anybody know what all that dust and smoke is over NYC?

So far the pandemic has killed a number of people equal to:

THREE Vietnam Wars:
A 9/11 every THREE days

Cities with the populations of:

Akron, OH
Huntsville, AL
Grand Rapids, MI
Amarillo, TX
Tempe, AZ

Even now, too many of Trump's fans won't wear a mask. This despite the fact health experts say it would save 70,000 lives by the end of December.

As long as people don't wear masks we are screwed. I went into an urban mcdonalds lobby. Not a single worker was wearing their mask right. Looks like a lot are worried about their chin getting covid. Anybody else bothered by the fact that Woodward waited until now to report this scoop? If he had done so earlier he could have saved thousands of lives.

I guess he prioritized his book profits above the lives of his fellow Americans. How the mighty have fallen.

#108 | Posted by Hagbard_Celine at 2020-09-11 12:22 PM | Reply

108 -- I am bothered by that but what Trump did was worse. And honestly what would it have changed? Trump would have thrown dust to change the narrative, lied, etc, exactly as he is now. He is still downplaying the virus and not wearing a mask or encouraging others to do so. Be bothered all you want about Woodward but it wouldn't have mattered.

#109 | Posted by justagirl_idaho at 2020-09-11 12:45 PM | Reply

I've never written a book but I would think it takes quite a bit of time to organize your facts and turn them into a book so Woodward's timing may be off a little but not greatly so and there is now way we can know if bringing it out earlier would have saved any lives. Trump hasn't changed anything since it came out and I don't expect that he will. He is still down playing the virus and wants the entire economy reopened quickly before the election. So, instead of warning the public about the dangers we face today he's telling the schools to keep the numbers of cases secret. That's Trump's solution. What you don't know about can't hurt you.
