President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday joined the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain at the White House to mark historic normalization agreements between Israel and the two Arab countries.

This is a really big deal, in large part because regardless of who wins the election the other Sunni nations will likely follow suit. Both Israel and the KSA want to see normalization of relations because they see this as a mechanism to increasingly isolate Iran, who they see as the biggest threat in the region.

"a mechanism to increasingly isolate Iran, "

The enemy of my enemy is my friend...perhaps ??

This is a really big deal and it's a shame that this thread may end with 5 remarks or less. Issues like campaign finance reform and something like this should be getting immense bipartisan support, even if there's one skeptical eye left open.

This reminds me of the time when it was claimed on the DR that trump was on his way to denuclearized North Korea

I suspect this "really big deal" will fizzle like all the others, prompting the chortlers to pretend they never said it was "a really big deal"

"This is a really big deal"

From Kushner's lips to your ears, LeftCoastLawyer.

"The last time such a ceremony took place in Washington was in 1994, when President Bill Clinton looked on as Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordanian King Hussein signed a declaration"

That was the kind of deal that got Rabin killed by Yigal Amir.

And exactly as planned, Israel went hard-right after the Orthodox Jew assassinated the Jewish State's democratically elected liberal leader.

This deal gives F-35s to UAE. What could possibly be wrong with that? I'm sure it will be just as good for the US as when we gave Iran F-14s in the 70s, and we've had friendly relations with Iran ever since!

The Israelis let the man who assassinated their Prime Minister get married in prison, and allowed him conjugal visits, and now he's a father.

He was sentenced to life, but I expect his release to a hero's welcome before the end of the decade.

After all, he paved the way for all this to happen.

"Peace" is a strange way to describe the ongoing Isrseli occupation and ethnic cleansing of Jordanian territory seized by Israel after the Six Day War.

#20 Welcome to the messiness of global geopolitical politics.

It's rarely a totally clean choice. From my perspective, I think supporting allies and countries that are not sworn enemies is a better approach than shunning allies (Israel) and propping up sworn enemies (Iran) is a bad way to go.

I remember when our media reacted with horror when Trump moved the embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. It was supposedly a huge slap in the face to the Palestinians. Yet, when offered a chance at the table since then they've refused and other players have moved on. The UAE is the most progressive Islamic countries in the region. They are so out of necessity as they lack the oil-rich natural resources of their neighbors. They have built an impressive tourism industry and have accepted Western "excesses" as a means of building their strong industry. Normalization of relations with Israel made sense for both countries (along with Bahrain). I know many on the left openly despise Israel but at the end of the day if forced to choose between living under Isreali law or Iranian law I'm pretty sure it would be an easy choice.

#23 Wake me up when it actually happens. It certainly could happen. I wasn't aware that the government of the UAE was a US-installed puppet with a reputation for brutality like the Shah. Further, Iran's economy has always been far more reliant on her natural resources than the UAE. Iran, like Saudi Arabia, had the global world turn a blind eye to her terrible history of human abuse violations because economic powerhouses NEEDED her oil. No country truly needs the tourism industry of the UAE.

You are comparing apples and oranges.

Aaaand you must also not be able to engender awareness that UAE getting buddy-buddy with American Durerte, and Trump giving them F-35s, is the UAE picking up the torch that the Shah dropped on his way to Cedars-Sinai.

We need a strong Arab ally, and Saudi ain't it ever since W. Cut-N-Run after 9/11, which was also a capitulation to OBL's demand to remove American bases and troops from around the Holy Land of Mecca and Medina.

"A major incentive for the UAE, which Kushner threw into the mix and Trump approved, was the sale of F-35 stealth fighter planes, EA-18 electronic jets, and Reaper drones. At first, Netanyahu balked at this part of the deal, especially after Kushner said that America's military relationship with the UAE "is very special, just as the relationship that America has with Israel is incredibly special" -- a baffling remark that would have drawn fire from Republicans in Congress had it been made by a senior official in any other administration."

Tee hee hee.

Anyway, here is why LeftCoastCenter is over the moon about this deal:

"Another incentive"for Bahrain, the UAE, and the royals calling the shots from Saudi Arabia"is that the deal would help Trump. They want Trump to be reelected, fearing that his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, would revive the Iran nuclear deal and strike a more balanced tone in U.S. policy in the Middle East, seeking diplomatic solutions rather than backing the Sunni side"as Trump clearly does"in the increasingly hot cold war against Iran."

Or are you just upset that it detracts from the Trumpster fire here in the US?

I'm willing to bet the average American has zero clue about this news and couldn't care any less about UAE or Israel.

The only people who seem interested are those desperate to find something about Trump's first four years in office to celebrate.

As long as Snoofy and Clownshack are are cherry-picking to save what little credibility they have, they must have seen this:

"As Malcolm Kerr observed more than a half-century ago in his classic book, The Arab Cold War, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has never been as central to Arab leaders' concerns as they have claimed. The boogeyman of Israel has served mainly as a distraction from their own internal problems"and as a common enemy to paper over sectarian tensions. In recent years, those tensions, mainly between Shiites and Sunnis, have risen to the fore - they've come to define the region's politics - and the Sunnis (led by Saudi Arabia and very much including the rulers of the UAE and Bahrain) have focused chiefly on the threat from Shiite-led Iran and its allied militias. With this real conflict in such high profile, concerns about Palestinians have faded - especially since Israel is, in effect, the Sunnis' ally in their face-off against Iran."

For any of you who think this isn't a good thing, your ignorance is showing. Previous administrations thought that Iran and the Palestinians were the key to peace. That strategy was followed for decades and through multiple dem and rep administrations. It has been said that Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Trump decided to try something different. His plan is obvious. Create peace with all of the other nations EXCEPT for Iran and the Palestinians. If all of the other nations have made peace with Israel, Iran will be left alone in the region and there's strength in numbers against Iran. Admit it. This is a good thing.

Both the UAE and Bahrain were founded in 1971 and neither have been hostile towards Israel.

UAE and Israel have been trade partners since 2015. All this signing does is make it public.
