Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, September 17, 2020

An internal memo from the Federal Emergency Management Agency obtained by ABC News on Wednesday night showed that the current national trend in new cases is only slightly down while the trend in new deaths is way up.

Of course he is.

Any reasonable person was predicting this back when the case count spiked a month or so ago. Trumpers were claiming deaths were down even though cases were up and arguing coronavirus isn't that bad, ignoring that it takes a while for someone to die.

Trump and his toadies were hailed by the Right as being 'outsiders', 'disrupters' (remember that one?), and 'businessmen, not politicians'. The clusterF**k that is our nation's response to Covid demonstrates that the GOP bus full of clowns includes some of the worst 'managers' and 'business executives' in the history of commerce. I doubt they were collectively trying to screw things up as much as they have, but the result of a mob of dopes, grifters and incompetent failures is that tens of thousands of Americans have died without necessity. One can scarcely imagine what another year of this buffoonery will bring, much less where the US could be in four years.

This country is being lead by Shemp, the worst of the Stooges...

Joe Biden already said that a mask mandate would be ordered immediately and Trumps Director of the CDC said that masks were probably more important than a vaccine to combat this disease.

"Covid Daily cases are half what they were in July"

But deaths are up. Reduction in the number of cases is probably due to wuppression of the information like they are presently doing in Florida schools.

#15 | Posted by danni at 2020-09-17 10:26 AM | Reply | Newsworthy 3

This is a predictable result of the CDC modifying recommendations for who needs to be tested. Despite what Trump likes to say, less testing does not mean fewer cases, it just means fewer detected cases.

#16 | Posted by johnny_hotsauce at 2020-09-17 10:30 AM | Reply

It's possible the case count is down because Trump has managed to stifle testing. But the death count is much harder to suppress.

Using that logic, no one ever died of AIDS, they all died of pneumonia. And Falling Man? His death had nothing to do with a plane.

Covid attacks the heart. Folks who survived have shown heart damage akin to a heart attack. If someone has Covid, and has a heart attack, you can be damned sure those two things are connected.

But tell us: how many deaths on 9/11 should we subtract, because the victims were fairly close to death anyway?

Fat Nixon's plan is to surrender to the virus, let is wipe out 4% of the population because he is weak and a coward.

DHS had a plan to mail five masks to every house in America to prevent the spread and he killed it.

His plan now is to blame Joe Biden, blame the blue states and let the disease sweep over America like a wildfire and kill up to 2.6 million people.

Have any of you looked at the way the CDC reports on cases and deaths. If you have, you'd see that the virus takes a break (I'm joking here) after 4 or 5 days each week and for 2 or 3 days the number of cases and deaths drop dramatically and then the numbers go up again. When I read this report, I was curious about why they selected the 9th -15th and the 2nd - 8th. When I ran the numbers, this article is correct -/+ a few % point but if the authors decided to run the number 1 day earlier (just one day), the trend in the latter week is 10% less. Statistics can be made to show anything you want and in this case, someone wanted to show that the virus isn't (at this moment) decreasing its affect. This is not to say that it won't get worse again but at moment, deaths aren't increasing by 17%. This is a case of not trusting everything you read.

Also, bullets kill people, not the people that shoot the bullets, that was just a coincidence. There are no criminals, empty the prisons and defund the police.

Rocky, JPW,

The article referenced the week 9-15 September. The new COVID death trend line is roughly sinusoidal, lasting roughly seven days. The number of deaths on the low point of the week prior was 224 new deaths (7 September). The low point for the following week was 397 (14 September). In reality, you could honestly make the claim that deaths had increased by 56% during the last week. Although that wouldn't paint a very clear picture as well. Whether you measure the high point in the wave or the low point, deaths have been decreasing since the beginning of August.

To put it in constrast to the common flu, during the 201-2018 season there were 45 million Americans who were infected, 21 million of which saw a healthcare provider. 810,000 people required hospitalization and 61,000 died.

The correct way of stating that is that we don't know if Obama/Biden's response would have been effective.

But you can say that failing to enact even basic tried and true public health mitigation strategies definitely won't work to control it.

When people say Trump is a failure it's not because they're making some imaginary comparison to Obama (who, BTW oversaw an excellent and successful response to H1N1 so you're really out on a limb here...). It's because he's literally doing nothing and ignoring expert advice on how to do something, somethings that have been tried and found to work in previous years.

So stop acting as if there's nothing but conjecture here, you're only showing your ignorance.

Influenza deaths are an estimate. The COVID numbers are hard data owing to the much more prolific testing and the unique symptomology for a summer illness.

In any case, it's always about trends. I'm not a fan of comparing specific time frames unless it's very very broad, ie overall deaths on a scale of months or a year. Honestly that's the most telling data so far, the level of excess deaths over March though now in 2020 compared to yearly averages.

#51 | Posted by jpw at 2020-09-17 01:24 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Obama was lucky with H1N1. Did Obama require masks for that virus? No. Look it up. Check out the images if you search on "N1H1 vaccine lines". No masks anywhere. Like almost all flus, it is transmitted through the air. Why no masks? Additionally, the H1N1 was a known strain of the swine flu and a vaccine was available. Comparing H1N1 to Covid-19 is really showing your ignorance. Let's talk about Covid-19. If you're telling me that some democrat would have implemented a full countrywide lockdown and required a mask in January, you're being quite optimistic of your democrat buddies. Democrats in Feb and early March will still talking about visiting places like Chinatown in San Fran and have a nice dinner out in Manhattan. I so wish we could run the clock back and give the Dems a try at this to see how they would have dealt this this in its early stages and I'd like to see how they'd be dealing with the vaccine issue. Maybe if the dems were in charge, they would have locked down the country for the next three years while they were waiting for the vaccine to go through the trials and maybe we'd be having to wear masks for the next decade. I wonder if you'd be complaining about that? Probably not because as much as you think I've consumed the republican cool-aid, you've drunk the democrat cool-aid. There's a part of me that would like Biden to win because this site will be toast. Nothing to complain about. Bad orange man gone. Good democrats doing good things with nothing to complain about.

Comparing H1N1 to Covid-19 is really showing your ignorance.

I'm a virologist you dumb ----.

Yes, H1N1 did have the advantage of a vaccine pipeline that didn't require extensive FDA approval.

But monitoring was much better, a test approved and rolled into the clinic in less than a month and the vaccine approved and pushed hard within two months (IIRC). Public health and national emergencies were issued within days (a week tops for national emergency) and significant federal and state resources immediately opened to respond and provide PPE/testing/vaccines.

If you're telling me that some democrat would have implemented a full countrywide lockdown and required a mask in January, you're being quite optimistic of your democrat buddies.

Never even suggested such a thing.

They would have, however, paid attention to it, begun spinning up resources and agencies to respond when necessary and been ready to send trained, properly equipped personnel to CA when we received the first US citizen cases from China. None of that happened with Trump and there is suspicion that some of the initial seeding events in northern CA were from untrained, unprepared personnel sent to deal with the returning citizens.

Democrats in Feb and early March will still talking about visiting places like Chinatown in San Fran and have a nice dinner out in Manhattan.

Because there was no evidence at that time of community spread in the US and people were doing economic damage because they thought that simply being Chinese meant they had COVID. People were being ignorant and fearful (funny compared to now...).

I wonder if you'd be complaining about that?

Lockdowns might not have been necessary if the response early on was competent. Our response really didn't start until it was already here and then, because of the lack of federal leadership, it was piecemeal and scattered as each state did it's own thing.

As for reopening, it would have been done according to public health guidelines/advice and would have been data driven, not the willy nilly everybody open cuz 'Murica! we had under Trump that inevitably resulted in case explosions in the states run by the ignorant.

As for masks I'm willing to wear one for as long as I have to. It's such a mild inconvenience I see resistance to it as more a flag of one's idiocy and selfishness than anything else.

There's a part of me that would like Biden to win because this site will be toast. Nothing to complain about. Bad orange man gone. Good democrats doing good things with nothing to complain about.

Sure there will be. Republican obstructionism and budgetary hypocrisy will rear its ugly head once more.

All came to America while Obama was president.

The Obama administration, believing the intelligence reports and science, acted swiftly.

All of those viruses were swiftly contained before they could run rampant across America.

You're an idiot who needs everyone else in the world to be a failure, in order to justify why Trump is such a failure.

Snoofy, An amazing comment about weekends. Who would have known that people and the virus enjoy weekends. Your attitude about people with my view is predictable. You think I'm stupid. Keep thinking that. You'll go far. Aren't other people seeing how dumb Snoofy's statement is? Come on man.

"You think I'm stupid."

That's because anyone stupid enough to proclaim Obama and Biden wouldn't have approached Covid differently is...well, stupid.

You literally have to believe Obama wouldn't have followed his own pandemic playbook.

Stewww-Piddd.

Obama had scientists in the Wuhan lab.

In other words, Obama's fault.

"In other words, Obama's fault."

Only if you eschew knowledge.

Now do the pandemic playbook.

Explaining COVID to Trump supporters. Who are currently living in their own reality completely based on Trump's tweets and conspiracy theories. Feels like constantly running in circles.

Each lap should be the last time you have to explain the same shht to the fkkking morons, but they're always at the finish line to say the same stupid shht all over again.

They're either all trolls. Or Trump voters are really dumb, To the point of wondering whether it's due to brain damage.

A concise description of 90% of Trumpers.

The remaining 10% are simply evil POSes who will gladly benefit off of other people's pain and misery.

Feel free to give us a reason to think otherwise.

In all fairness, under Trump it's become damn near impossible to discern sarcasm/satire from genuinely held beliefs on a number of topics.

I mean, if you can't figure out why the graph sawtooths down every weekend, and pops up again on Monday, aren't you maybe a little stupid?

People make stupid mistakes all the time. I was off by 1,000x yesterday. But I quickly realized my error. Hopefully you've realized that data from weekends isn't the same as data from the week. Hopefully you've figured that's just a harmless data artifact from people working M-F, and not some kind of George Soros plot for Al Gore to steal your Ford Tempo and replace it with a Nissan Leaf.

His plan now is to blame Joe Biden, blame the blue states and let the disease sweep over America like a wildfire and kill up to 2.6 million people.

#37 | Posted by Nixon

Blaming the 'Blue' states would have been like George W Bush telling America that if it wasn't for New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, no one died on 9/11.

The American Independent
@AmerIndependent

Praising his own virus response as deaths near 200,000, Trump says, "if you take the blue states out, we're at a level I don't think anybody in the world would be at."
