...According to Reuters, Stankey said that AT&T's ad-supported phone plans could be introduced in "a year or two." AT&T is already doing back-end work in its targeted-advertising system that could increase the value of such plans to AT&T's ad-sales business:

AT&T engineers are creating "unified customer identifiers," Stankey said. Such technology would allow marketers to identify users across multiple devices and serve them relevant advertising.

The ability to fine-tune ad targeting would allow AT&T to sell ads at higher rates, he said.

Stankey also said that a planned ad-supported version of HBO Max would play an important role in ad-supported phone plans, but he didn't offer further details, according to Reuters.

"Various companies including Amazon, Virgin Mobile USA, and Sprint's Boost Mobile have tested advertising-supported phone services since the early 2000s but they have not caught on. AT&T is hoping that better advertising targeting could revive the idea," Reuters wrote....

God I hate AT&T. I'm so glad I cut all connections with them.

It took a complaint to my state's AG to get them to stop hounding me for $150 they claimed I owed for not returning my hardware, despite my having the shipping label, tracking number and receipt of confirmation from UPS that the package was delivered to AT&T.

I had to LOL though because three days after I filed the report I got a call from some regional VP to "clear up the misunderstanding". It was gone and I got a $85 refund for an overcharge pretty much immediately.

If we pay a thousand bucks for a top tier smart phone, who the hell is dumb enough to allow it to be polluted by ad-scamming strangers for a 5 fricken dollars discount.

C'mon, who?

Anybody?...

Probably people who accept the fact that ad-scamming is coming to your phone eventually whether you like it or not.

Kinda like when MSFT asks if you want to "try out" their new product when they are going to shove down your throat in 6 months anyway.

Screw that! I use a noise app when I sleep, I'm too cheap to pay for the add-free subscription so every Sunday night, it plays a 30-second ad for some stupid game app, and every time it makes me angry!

People that don't pay $1000 for a top tier phone. You can get an AT&T burner for $30.

Sitz is correct about that, my next phone will be a burner. We may like the features of the iphones but we are opening ourselves up to all sorts of invasions of our privacy with them. I might go back to an old fashioned rotary dial phone but will they even still work today?

You get all of the app functionality from a burner. You don't get luxuries like gorilla glass, high end camera arrays, finger print scanners, no Knox platform, etc.

A $30 burner nowadays is going to be Android, probably os version 8, 5" screen, 2MP/5MP dual camera setup front & back, 16gb of storage or so. Nothing to sneeze at. People went to the moon with a lot less. Definitely still spying on you thuogh.

more adds on my phone....better yet, get a
different carrier every time they suggest
this sorta crap...

btw...YouTube, you should take notes...
your recently added adds are really killing
the channel...

YouTube is desperately trying to become a paid streaming service.

They're going to make watching the free version so unbearable you'll either stop using it or pay the monthly fee to be ad free.

Amazon has been doing this with their devices for years now. You can buy a kindle at a discount if you go for the ad-sponsored version.

An ad killer like Enhancer For YouTube can quiet things down while using Firefox.

Great.. because between t.v., radio, and billboards everywhere..it just didn't fill my need for useless information about products I'll never buy.
