If I had been in Portland, I would have pulled the sim card (carrier connection) out of my phone and used Skype through public wi-fi or a portable hotspot that connects to many devices from a single phone (burner).
Even better, I would not have brought a phone at all. That way, if I'm detained then I'm not an open book of data for snoops or their Stingray spoof machines.
Lastly I could have put my phone into Airplane mode then slipped it into a Faraday pouch to prevent communications altogether until I pull it out and turn off Airplane Mode.

Good luck. There are way too many people today that can't even breath without their phone.

I guess spying on peaceful protestors is okay, but spying on Russian spies talking to Trump campaign staff is the worst crime evar.

You don't matter. Simple as that.

Les is right. If you are going up against Trumpy and his criminal apparatus don't use your own phone. Be smart and buy a burner phone.

If you don't know how to do it properly or why it's necessary then read the book by Kevin Mitnick called the Art of Invisibility.

Feds Tapped Protesters' Phones in Portland

Because that's what you do to terrorists.

Even the scrawny, white, soy-infused upper middle-class ones.

They don't get a pass. And if you think they do, maybe you need to check your privilege.

Re: #7

Not all protestors are White Supremacist Domestic Terrorists www.youtube.com

The Boogalosers were definitely burning things down in Minneapolis. On UnicornRiot you could see protestors putting out trash fires lit by a "protestor", and the "protestor" kept quickly moving to the next trash can and lighting it on fire. He obviously was not there in solidarity with those marching.

Hmm.. how to set a Stingray on fire.. could their directed energy weapon used for crowd control be repurposed? Or, that kind of technology make their vans uncomfortable? From a distance makes sense, and something that they can't avoid.

#10 Yes, if you see a Hawaiian print, know that is Boogaloo.

This is EXACTLY what things like the Patriot Act was built for. These are domestic terrorists who intend to do harm to the country. Being able to monitor them is incredibly important. And we need to stop calling them protestors. They aren't protesting anymore. They are inciting violence. Liberals go nuts on Trump for saying things that incite violence but then hypocritically turn a blind eye to any of their flock who do the same. The message from Libs is it's OK to incite violence and hatred as long as it's for a Liberal cause. Do you really want that to be your representation for your party, Dems?

The Boogalosers and the White Supremacist Domestic Terrorists that the FBI warns are our number one threat at home are liberals now?

Mao would love it in china, they have social scores and monitor the phones of Everybody to keep the peace and protect the regime. Why do right wingers scream
about freedom and liberty and then want to be surveilled, and have police oversight of everything anybody does?

They are far more authoritarian than they are freedom loving, they only want "freedom",for people like themselves. The rest must be watched and controlled. They suck.

Great.

So when do we start monitoring GOP Congressional members' and senators' communications as they actually do damage to this country?

You don't think the government has some role in monitoring hate speech and activities that are otherwise subversive to the common good?

You're not one of those provincial twits always whining about wearing a mask in public---or "MuH FrEeDUm oF sPeEcH" when someone calls you out for being a racist -------, are you?

We're all in this together.

As usual, facts are not on your side.

Right-wing attacks and plots account for the majority of all terrorist incidents in the United States since 1994, and the total number of right-wing attacks and plots has grown significantly during the past six years. Right-wing extremists perpetrated two thirds of the attacks and plots in the United States in 2019 and over 90 percent between January 1 and May 8, 2020.

Why are rightwingers such embarrassing liars?

#18 No I don't see a government role in surveillance of citzens without a warrant. We
live in a "free", society. If you think there is a role for government doing that your moniker is accurate. Go live in China, you'd fit right in. America is not for cowards who want to control everybody. Those scary antifa, they need to be watched. What a sad example of a free citizen you are. Even Timothy McVeigh should not have been surveilled without due process. I walk the walk. You're a pathetic fear consumed coward.

"The Boogalosers were definitely burning things down in Minneapolis."

Do you think the Federal Government should be tapping their phones?

What the article didn't say is if the taps had been authorized by a designated approval authority. If they had, it's probably legit. And given that it sounds like a technically complex process. If not, if they were acting on their own, they're probably going to find themselves in hot water.

I must be old because I remember a time when the feds intercepted and logged all electronic communications in the entire country and as much as they could in the world in the name of fighting terrorism. There was a guy, brought it to people's attention and had to flee to Russia. What was his name, Hailden? Rainden?
